Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

You could be right there  - the last ozeki to retire at the rank was Kaio in 2011. All the others demoted since have had a go at the 10-5 comeback, although Kotooshu only lasted one tournament after he failed to be re-promoted.

Yeah, those were the times... when ships were made of wood, men made from iron and ozeki retired upon losing their rank :D

Real disappointing comments regarding Goeido losing his rank. Seems everybody is happy about it.

Yes, he was frustrating to watch at times and should have done better and at least get that Yusho in Sept 2017, but he also produced top Sumo many times (yes, lack of consistency is a fair criticism).

The guy managed to keep his rank for 6 years, saving his rank while fighting injured many times. It should be given some credit now that injuries took the better, instead of celebraiting

Which comments are you referring to? I hardly see anyone mentioning it, let alone celebrating it. Between my comment posted immediately after his loss to Asanoyama and your own post the only discussion of Goeido is speculation about intai and whether he has a kabu. Nobody shows even the slightest hint they are happy he’s lost his rank.

Correction: There is one post which refers to him as a Fauxzeki. Hardly “everybody”.

... And my "Like" was for Watershed.

Yes, and since there must always be 2 Ozeki on a banzuke, that also means we will have the return of the Yokozuna-Ozeki. My guess is that will be Hakuho, but it could also be Kakuryu, as both only had 1 win this basho... Does 1-3-11 trump 1-4-10 or vice-versa?  ;-)

Since they both have 1 win, Hakuhou will keep the east side... my guess is that Kakuryuu will be Y1wYO and Takakeishou O1e.

Tochiouzan, Makuuchi veteran gets his first kachikoshi since Kyushu 2018! : "I was able to do patient sumo facing opponents who were in good shape. I want to return to where I was on the banzuke slowly but Shirley!"

Abi, unable to overcome Shoudai: "Shoudai-zeki is strong. He was heavy. You can't see it but he surely has put on weight. I think he is gambarizing in training.."

Ex- Ozeki Tochinoshin, seeing Goueidou losing his Ozeki rank: "It's difficult keeping your Ozeki rank.. When you are a high-ranker you have to win and when you don't it's painful.."

Asanoyama, yorikiriing Goueidou, dropping him to Sekiwake: ""I'm glad I was patient. I had to stop that two loss losing streak.."

Takakeishou, winning by kotenage, not his usual menu: "He got his right hand in, so I had no choice and did what I definitely should not have.. I won the bout but  it was a 100% loss in sumo. I should be thankful for remaining in the yusho race. It's no use if I don't win by myself.."

Goueidou, losing his Ozeki rank after 33 bashos: "It wasn't bad but my head was too high. I was forced to go chest to chest and I should have gotten my head in. I was simply powerless."

Shoudai, tied for the lead, beats Abi, dancing on the tawara: "It was bad sumo. I was pushed back but I was patient. Yesterday wasn't good either and the bad image remained.. It's the first time that I'm involved in the yusho race so I can't say much about it. I'm not conscious of it that much. Still, I feel I have become a bit stiff.. I had been really wanting to remain a sekitori so I was nervous about getting kachikoshi (explaining why after a good beginning in Makuuchi he has stalled for a long time..). Now, I am more at ease. All I want is to enjoy the basho as I planned, hoping the results will follow. The days are flying by quickly and 15 days is a long time. This is a first time experience for me. I surely want to get the yusho but getting all worked up about it is not like me.. I would also like to apologize to Kintamayama for not becoming Ozeki yet.""

“I won the bout but  it was a 100% loss in sumo.”

I like that comment. He knows he didn’t dominate and had to wrestle outside his comfort zone to win. Of course, a great rikishi can do that, but a really true great doesn’t let himself get in that situation in the first place. He’s got the right mindset has Takakeisho.

An impressive come from behind win by Kotoshoho today.  He seems like another one heading straight up to Makuuchi.

Poor luck of the draw for Tatsukaze (SD82, 6-0).   He drew Ura for a chance to go 7-0 and didn't.

Yet another impressive win by Terunofuji against J2 Kotonowaka.   I think the former got morozashi'd and still won.

Terunofuji wins with Kimedashi, his specialty, like ex Ôzeki Takanonami.

Tokushoryu! He’s made that ‘step back to the bales and then to the side’ tsukiotoshi his trademark this basho. Aoiyama, Kagayaki and Yutakayama have all fallen to it (and maybe more I’m forgetting). 12-1. Whatever else happens this is his career-best basho performance.

Tokushoyu appears completely unfazed by the moment.

He was asked if he's having any trouble sleeping given the pressure of being in the lead.

He replied: "Nope, I'm sleeping like a baby."
