Hah, they did split up Endo and Hokutofuji, just not in the way I thought they would.

Poor Tomokaze. Tochinoshin, on the other hand...

This looks promising. I'm looking forward to Enho vs. Tochinoshin and Ichinojo vs. Terunofuji. Hope Ichi & Tochi are healthy enough to make that happen.

Wow, this is nuts. Shafted- Terutsuyoshi, Tomokaze, Chiyotairyuu, Chiyomaru, Yutakayama. I know, I know, banzuke luck and all, but some of these are crazy.

A short list of shikona changes for this banzuke. Nishikido-beya's Honda suffered his first kyujo after eight years on the dohyo last basho, so perhaps his new shikona will bring some luck with it.

Wagurayama drops the middle kanji and returns to his family name of Wayama, and changing back to his real given name as well.

Tagonofuji honours his hometown of Akashi, Hyogo prefecture and is now Akashifuji, returning the city to the banzuke following the retirement of his stablemate Akashiryu in September. He also makes a given name change.

Finally, Kise-beya's Goryu makes an interesting change to Bankoku, along with a given name change. His new kanji had a short stint on the banzuke just over 20 years ago with Yorozukuni - hopefully Bankoku will have more luck and time with them.

Mk53e Honda > Wakanoumi (若ノ湖)
Sd1e Wagurayama Isamu > Wayama Yuji (和山 勇次)
Sd24e Tagonofuji Daisuke > Akashifuji Koijiro (明石富士 恋次郎)
Sd37e Goryu Kazunori > Bankoku Hajime (萬國 一)

Roga has changed his shusshin from Mongolia to Russia, I seem to recall Akinomaki reporting earlier this year that he wanted to make that change.

The urakata promotions listed here take effect with this banzuke.

One other note, Takanofuji's intai has now been backdated to October 11th (the date when he eventually threw in the towel), so I suppose his Kyushu result should be displayed as 0-0 in the database instead of a kyujo 0-0-7?

First post here, I will keep it simple. I obviously love stronger rikishi, just look at my username, taken from a former Ozeki known for his physique and strength. Seeing Tochinoshin this low is, although deserved, quite saddening, yes I know it is habit to favor Tochinoshin coming into the community but dropping back down to Maegashira is very depressing, even if he is far from my favorite rikishi. Speaking of my favorite rikishi I am glad to see Ishiura doing well, I hope he can make it any farther. Very interesting banzuke with a lot of interesting and tough decisions made in the mid to low Maegashira level. The top half was actually pretty predictable, hopefully we see Sekiwake Takayasu put in some good sumo so he can get back to where he was.

Also, it seems like they really want Gagamaru to retire. Ms9 from Juryo is pretty harsh, and even a 6-1 from that rank probably won't be enough for an immediate promotion.

Three less sanyaku meant that some crazy stuff was going to happen.  They apparently took the opportunity to do it even more crazily than most of us imagined.

I really want to see Enho v Tochinoshin. Either Enho gets ahold on the front of Tochi's belt and pulls or Tochi grabs Enho and throws him out of the ring like King Kong. Either way, I'd be entertained

It is harsh but par for the course. Based on Gagamaru's condition in the past few months, an immediate repromotion is too tall an order.

My biggest misses:  Tochinoshin, Ryuden and Sadanomi on one side; Kagayaki and Azumaryu on the other.

I figured Miyogiryu over Endo at M1 -- puzzled why that isn't case.

Juryo was predictable, but I don't think I will ever understand upper Ms picks.  Shiba should by all rights be Ms1e and Chiyonokuni got short-changed out of a promotable spot.

I think a case could be made for putting Shiba in front of Midorifuji, but not the two 5-10 demotees from juryo, at least by the standards of the last few years where full-size drops for juryo demotions are only enforced when there are compelling candidates to put ahead, and 5-2 from Ms7 just isn't that.

Yeah, the Kyokai seems to concur, the Kyushu hoshitori received the equivalent adjustment, and his profile shows only 28 absences which implies none for Kyushu basho. (Although actually it looks like the 0-0-7 already isn't counted towards his career record on the DB either, probably because he was marked intai before the start of the tournament there. So it's just the basho record that needs to be deleted.)

To me it's still crazy to see Terunofuji back in Juryo and so close to makuuchi. Just months ago there were doubts his knees would even hold up in makushita joi competition but he's gotten stronger with every basho and I think he might even be able to get his wins in Juryo.

I was a little concerned about Hoshoryu's fate after his 7-8 debut in Juryo.  Fortunately for him, he is getting another shot at sekitorihood.  I'm hoping that a few (hundred) extra New Year mochi rice dumplings will help beef him up for the Hatsubasho...

OK, so underdemotion prevails over overpromotion in Ms, just like I have observed happening in the higher divisions.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't promote Abi to Sekiwake. SNS scandal may actually be a factor?

Abi hasn’t been treated unfairly, except perhaps by fate...

Nagoya. Abi makes his komusubi debut and gets his eight wins. Very commendable and with sekiwake Tamawashi posting a 5-10 he should have been looking at a promotion BUT a big boulder called Takakeisho drops from the ozeki shelf to fill the empty spot. NO VACANCIES.

Aki. Good news; Abi posts an excellent 9-6. Bad news; both sekiwake get kk. Good news; one of the sekiwake is the aforementioned Takakeisho and that boulder is bouncing right back up to ozeki. Bad news; Tochinoshin is dropping down to replace him. NO VACANCIES.

Kyushu. Another 9-6 for Abi and with both sekiwake recording mk his moment has surely come. BUT Takayasu becomes the third falling ozeki in a row to take a sekiwake slot and goldenboy Asanoyama leaprogs Abi to snaffle the other empty position. On Christmas Eve there was NO ROOM AT THE INN for baby Abi.
