sadanoyama jr 9 Posted November 27, 2019 My first exposure to sumo was on television in Japan while stationed outside Tokyo with the U.S. Air Force. In May 1962 I attended the 7th day of the tournament in the old Kuramae Kokugikan. I got there early in the day, before noon, and watched the lower divisions leading up to the two Yokozuna's bouts, Taiho and Kashiwado, around 5 PM. My favorite rikishi was Sadanoyama. I have visited Japan often over the years, but only attended live events twice more. Over the last dozen years we have had access to TV Japan on our cable subscription, (an outrages $25 per month for the ONE channel), and watch the NHK Highlight show during each of the six yearly basho. Discovered this forum today in The Japan Times and joined immediately. Look forward sharing news and opinions. Gambarimasu/cheers. 7

Welcome to the forum! Were you stationed at Tachikawa in Japan? I know the Air Force had a base there but they moved to the Fussa area (Yokota Air Base). sadanoyama jr 9 Posted November 29, 2019 I was stationed at Yokota Air Base that was established in 1945 and in operation today. Tachikawa was in operation from 1945 to the late 1960s when it was reverted to Japanese civilian control. Fussa is the nearest Japanese town to Yokota.

Well, them both being in operation at the same time is something that I did not know. I was stationed at Yokota from 1987-1990.

Joaoiyama 280 Posted November 30, 2019 What i love the most about the forum is how many people i have connected with and will still meet for the rest of my life. I'm 23 years old, i think about the future of sumo and the forum too, i want to be here to see the great people that helped build this comunity live through the next generations. sumojoann 1,099 Posted November 30, 2019 Hi and welcome from Houston, Texas! I'm glad you heard about Sumo Forum. I have learned so much from the sumo "elders" on this forum. My husband and I also have TV Japan. Yes, $25/month is outrageous but worth it. I am a night owl and retired, so in addition to watching the highlights, I like to stay up every night for the 15 nights and watch the live broadcast. Here, as well as in San Antonio, it comes on between 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM (or sometimes 2:00 AM to 4:00 AM depending on Daylight Savings Time). The live broadcast covers only the Makuuchi bouts, but I'm thrilled to be able to have that. I have found that no matter how much I learn about sumo wrestling, there is so much more I have yet to learn. I believe it will always be that way but that's part of the appeal. It's so nice to know of another person in Texas who likes sumo. Again, welcome!
