Last oshi-zumo yokozuna?

Recommended Posts

Who was the last yokozuna to be exclusively (or perhaps predominantly) oshi-zumo rather than yotsu-zumo?

Not sure there has ever been a yokozuna using exclusively pushing and thrusting. Akebono was the last to favour thrusting, although he started using yotsu more towards the end of his career I believe. Not too long before him, there was the current chairman of the Japan Sumo Association, Hokutoumi.

You'll notice in their kimarite listings that both of them still had numerous wins via yotsu techniques. Reaching that highest level is much more difficult if all you can do is oshi, and oshi seems to have a lower ceiling than yotsu does.

Akebono had to learn to switch to Yotsu due to a back injury later in his career.

I think it´s fair to state Akebono was the last Yokozuna who achieved the rank with almost solely relying on oshi sumo.

Asashoryu did mostly oshi-zumo before he was promoted to Yokozuna but was told he had to do proper Yokozuna Sumo and shifted to mostly yotsu at that point.
