A Yokozuna Appears!

Recommended Posts

Last Saturday, just a week before the All Japan Amateur Championships, coach Saito Kazuo of Nippon Sport Science University and newly crowned Student Yokozuna Nakamura Daiki visited Tachikawa Renseikan Sumo Dojo for a training session. Coach Saito's connections with Tachikawa Renseikan run deep, there's even a photo of him at the dojo. In fact, Renseikan's coach Gohara used to be a member of the sumo club at Nippon Sport Science University, at the same time as when Yoshikaze was there.

According to coach Saito, if you want to become strong at sumo, there are three important things to follow:

  • Listen to your parents / elders
  • Do a lot of studying
  • Be honest, both with yourself and with your training

Whilst there, Daiki lent his chest to the kids at the dojo, who were all very excited to train with a national champion. "His body is so hard and so solid!" they exclaimed, "I want to grow up to be just like him!". All of them loved the experience.

After that, coach Saito and Yokozuna Daiki posted for a group photo with everyone at Tachikawa Renseikan, and returned to their preparations for Sunday's tournament. Good luck to Daiki, who is confirmed to be a participant, despite only being a first-year. Good luck also to Renseikan alumni Sawada Hideo, Sawada Hitoshi and Hatsuyama Sho, who will also be vying for that Amateur Yokozuna title on Sunday. As usual, Renseikan's coach Sagawa will be one of the announcers there. Gambarimasu!

Nakamura has been a beast this year. Hokutofuji may not end up being the best Daiki Nakamura after all!

It's incredible isn't it, that they share the same name in English, and both are Student Yokozuna in their day?
