2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

I agree that while Enho was robbed by that call, he didn’t deserve to win the match. The second half was all Azamaryu, who was totally in the drivers seat and the one on the offensive. Enho was second to touch the ground by fluke—lucky happenstance only—not by anything he did to control the outcome. It was totally out of his control by that point, because he had been bested. Anyway, bad call, tough call, but I don’t feel bad for him on account of the monoii. Them’s the breaks.

On a somewhat related note, reading all the melts from Tochinoshin’s (mostly Georgian) supporters standing up for him after the Ozeki’s rather cheap and desperate henka on day 9 was absolutely hilarious. I’m a huge Tochinoshin fan, by the way, but I’ll still call it what it was. All that online blustering made my day.

Escaping or delaying almost certain defeat from a very disadvantageous position is something I would surely see being honored in the same way as any attacking maneuver. I think a lot of people are thrilled by such amazing body control and sense of balance.

It is a bit like those defense specialists in table tennis that just keep on returning the smashes by their opponent, standing 5 meters behind the plate just patiently waiting for the smasher to make a mistake (or getting exhausted).

Just my 2 yen...

A five-way tie after ten days. Exciting stuff. I don’t have a clue who will take it, but I think I’d like it to go to Asanoyama.

Takakeisho better watch out for the  Tochi henka tomorow...

I don't see it happening. Tochi looked disgusted with himself after henka-ing Endo, but I get the desperation given his position and Endo's recent success over him.

Even though he's in good form; Takakeisho is still coming back from a long-term injury himself. I think Tochi would have too much pride to pull a move like that against a less than 100% opponent in a similar position to himself.

But, what the hell do I know? Gotta love the drama.

Asanoyama is looking to me like the favorite to win.

The 3 favourites all looking to add to their one yusho. Should be an exciting last few days. Is this the much anticipated new era beginning?

If recent form against Endo contributed to his decision to henka him, then I don’t see why it would stop Tochinoshin doing it against Takakeisho, who has completely bossed him over the last two years. The record is 6-1 in Takakeisho’s favour, plus one fusen ‘win’ for Tochinoshin to make it officially 6-2. It’s not as if Takakeisho is struggling right now, so I doubt Tochinoshin will feel too sorry for him. Takakeisho certainly didn’t feel sorry for Tochinoshin in basho past when he was visibly fighting hurt. Heck, it was even Takakeisho who denied him the rank-saving 8th win that saw him drop back to Sekiwake, so he might even fancy a wee bit of revenge.

Seeing the photos of Mitakeumi, Takakeisho and Asanoyama at the top of the list on the kyokai website, with no Hakuho, Kakuryu or Goeido in sight, I did say to myself, “This is what all basho will look like before too long”. It does feel like we’re getting a preview of the near future.

All valid points, and I by no means would be surprised to see a Tochi henka. I just don't necessarily expect it.

To clarify, I don't think Tochi will 'feel sorry' for Keisho. I think it's more the case that a henka against Endo could be pragmatically justified. But a henka against someone who's been out nearly two basho and who an Ozeki should be able to beat? It's a harder sell, especially for someone as competitive as Tochi.

But yeah, we've seen him bust out the Henka against Kak a couple of tournaments back, and against Endo here. I'm sure his desperation is as high as it's ever been.

The DRAMA, people!

The two Yokozuna and the three Ozeki are all walking injuries these days. I can't see Goeido or Tochinoshin ever contending for a yusho again. Takayasu might get lucky but only if he can get fit and get a basho where some other guys get injured to smooth his path. Kak and Hak are both still miles ahead of anyone else, when fit, but that only happens every third or fourth basho now. Mitakeumi, Takakeisho and Asanoyama feels like the next top group, with maybe Hokotofuji, Tomokaze and a couple of others in there for good measure. At least until Naya and Hoshoryu make it to the top level anyway.

Three remarks on today.

- Last basho made me forget how good Ryuden really is, but he can get it done. Geez, to think that his oyakata said he should "man up and get on with it" while nursing a destroyed knee, when he first made juryo a long time ago.

- Amazing pop that the crowd gave gaijin Tochinoshin despite the earlier henka on their darling. Massive respect for his fighting spirit.

- Goeido is unlucky to have his body desintegrate precisely when the yokozuna do so. No small period where he'd have his chance.

Day ten, and the basho is still bonkers. I suspect this one's going to come down to the wire.

Tochinoshin has a real chance to keep his rank. I wonder if he can pull it off?

Did Takakeisho look like he was treating his knee a little gingerly after his match? I hope that's my imagination...

I'm gonna take Mitakeumi as my pick for the yusho winner. Not really based on anything other than my desire to see him do well, but there it is.

Agreed. I think once the current Y/O are gone, which shouldn’t be too long away, that our upper sanyaku is going to be Mitakeumi, Takakeisho, Asanoyama, Hokutofuji and Tomokaze, with the likes of Abi, Meisei, Kotoeko, and a few others taking turns in the joi and lower sanyaku ranks. I think Takayasu will stick around for a while if his injury heals as he’s still one of the better wrestlers right now. He just seems to have terrible luck.

A healthy Takayasu would be winning this tournament.

I still hold out hope he'll one day wear the tsuna.

Easy to claim, impossible to prove. Even a healthy Takayasu has garnered his share of improbable losses.

FWIW, yesterday Mainoumi made a point of stating it was not a henka versus Endo.  Ajigawa oyakata said that he slipped right giving the appearance of going for mae-mitsu or migi-uwate, then took a swing and slapped Endo down.

Wow, what a weak and tentative tachiai in that Enho-Kotoeko match. It was as if they were both surprised that it wasn't a matta.

They struggling more than I expected in makushita-joi. Struggling is probably a strong word but you know we probably all expected to see them in juryo by now

Guys let me tell you we are all probably completely overlooking one more "future star" in the making : Tochikamiyama has 23-3 career record to date and he is currently at 4-1 from Makushita 54. He is 20 months younger than Hoshoryu and a year younger than Naya. He has already much bigger size than those 2 (and this could be bad for him to carry 150+ kgs from 18 yo) but I seen a couple bouts and this kid has already impressive technique.
