2019 Aki Basho Discussion (spoiler alert!)

Tamajiro took the plunge. Inosuke began climing the dohyo to cover for him, but stepped down when halfway up when Tamajiro managed to get up and rush back to call the winner.

How did Tamajiro know who had won? Did Inosuke tell him?

Not looking good for Tochinoshin. Can't really call him unlucky today as it was a clear error from the gyoji. And what happened to Kakuryu - he seemed to be in complete control in the early stages. Lapse of concentration?

Daieisho’s balance and agility are very underrated. Kakuryu should have won, it’s true, but credit to his aite for just being ... well, actually pretty good.

Sumo royalty in the kokugikan today.

Also since Kakuryu got defeated by a rank-and-filer again, the zabuton were sent flying...

Is Daeisho shocked or happy?

Hey, the Gyojis get in trouble for this!

For the sashi chigae as tate-gyoji, (instead of using his tanto for seppuku) Inosuke handed in the customary request of resignation (customarily refused): "I don't know why I missed. I'm sorry."

Tamajiro after his drop from the dohyo had a bloody head and couldn't see who won - a ringside judge told him where to point his gunbai.

The last tate gyoji sashi chigae was Kyushu 2015.

Kakuryuu has been pulling from day 1. Probably kyujo soon.

It's amazing how natural those implants feel.

Not sure if anyone has already posted the Asanoyama/Goeido bout where the hapless Gyoji Tamajiro took a dive.  It's initially off-camera but you can hear the thud at 2:30.  Poor guy!

I am a bit interested in Kotosusumu and would like to see more of his matches. 18 year old who joined this year out of high school with no sumo background and only went 3-3 in Mz, but doing pretty well now and last basho even beat high school yokozuna + Kokutai champion Kitanowaka (as well as the mighty Abezakura). Physically similar to stablemates Kotonowaka and Kototebakari. Obviously still early days on the banzuke of course.

Maybe Tamajiro already felt really bad that Takekisho had stepped on his sandal (and promptly fell) in the previous bout

I didn't notice that while I watched the livestream and feared Takakeisho's knee was giving him trouble again...

I noticed it while watching the live broadcast but I still don't know if Takakeisho fell because of his knee injury or if tripping over the sandal was the cause.  Personally, I think it was the sandal, but now I'm concerned that as a result of being tripped, it re-aggravated his knee injury.

Maybe Takakeisho broke his sandal when he stepped on it and this caused Tamajiro to fall in the next bout.

Looking at it I think it was neither. I think Takakeisho stubbed his toe putting his foot down and feared hyper extending his knee to recover the step and just went down to avoid injury.

I like how they kept to sumo tradition and nobody did a thing to help him. Not even bend over and offer a hand.

Thanks for the correction.   Funny stuff nevertheless, but one that I hope not to see again.

He looked perfectly fine walking back to the dressing room, I'd be very surprised if he did.

As always Endo was very exuberant during his post win interviews today...

Q: You were able to handle Takakeisho's impact and power...  Endo "I'm glad I could"

Q: You lost on day 1 but won 5 straight after that   Endo :"I'm able to focuss"

Q: you are doing offensive sumo and getting wins Endo: "I'm happy"

A comedy of errors from Tamajiro. First he trips up Takakeisho and then in the next bout he's trying so hard to keep away from the rikishi he trips over the straw bales. Not a good day at the office for him.

豪栄道(左)を上手投げで破る朝乃山(撮影・河田真司)

Asanoyama was asked if he saw the Gyoji fly away during the bout, he answered that he briefly saw it but was focussed on the match obviously.

On the bout himself and his turn table throw on Goeido :   "I can't remember. I just know I was falling behind at the begining and thought 'this is not good !' but I could get a left grip so I managed to go forward and attack despite being in a difficult position"

Asanoyama apparently had some kind of leg inflamation/infection ( 蜂窩織炎 ) that started late august so he couldn't train enough before the basho "despite that I can move pretty well because I managed to train well during the tour"  https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909130000852.html

Asanoyama beat Kakuryu, both ozeki and Sekiwake Mitakeumi so far this basho... not bad uh ?

Did you guys notice how the gyōji that was sitting ringside tried to take over when Tamajirō fell off? I’ve never seen that before. I guess it makes sense that another gyōji would have to take over if the one officiating the current bout is incapacitated.

Also I’m sorry about it but I had to rewatch the bout several times before I could stop laughing about the gyōji’s fall and actually see what happened in the bout.
