autotroph 43 Posted September 12, 2019 Salute to Fiesty Yoshikaze! Those of us who enjoy honest sumo deployed with indomitable spirit have lost a good man today.
Taikoubana 144 Posted September 13, 2019 Watching this basho just hasn't felt right since hearing the news, and it seems like it won't feel right for a very long time. Over all the other veterans and up-and-comers, Yoshi has remained my favorite, for his spirited sumo and extremely likeable personality. He was a constant bright presence in the sumo world and I can't remember a time I felt underwhelmed watching him step off the dohyo. I'm consoled by the thought of him in one of those swanky blue blazers, watching guard over the hanamichi. Here's to hoping he finds his place in the kyokai. Otsukaresamadeshita!
dingo 1,263 Posted September 13, 2019 Makuuchi feels weird without Yoshikaze. I grew accustomed to seeing him hanging around in high-to-mid maegashira, or in the few cases he had a bad basho, seeing him bounce back up with a double digit score from low maegashira. Even as the bad news kept coming in, I was waiting for him to do his usual bounce back from the bottom of makuuchi, or even from juryo. It just seemed like a law of nature that Yoshikaze will always bounce back. So I'm sad he won't be there anymore to deliver one of his usual crazy slapfests with Shohozan (who's already 35 by the way...). Sad to see him leave the dohyo, glad to see him take his well-deserved place amongst the oyakata.
sekitori 492 Posted September 14, 2019 (edited) Two thngs I remember most about Yoshikaze, one of my favorite rikishis: 1. The man was fearless. He was not afraid to smash his head against his opponent's skull and when a match was over, it sometimes looked as if his face was hit by a sledgehammer. I hope all that head-to-head contact over many years will have no effect on his future life. 2. He was the perfect example of complying with the rule that both hands must touch the dohyo at the tachi-ai. If rikishis need any reminder of how this should be done properly, all they have to do is look at a video of the start of any of his bouts. I will miss him greatly. I don't remember having heard before that the announcement to the koenkai of retirement and taking on a toshiyori name - in particular of the official event for that, the intai-/name succession hirou sumo, was called a ceremony, but apparently it is a very sincere (that's why they all laugh) and traditional duty for a recently retired rikishi. Searching for name succession ceremony i found this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shūmei The articles says that shumei is linked to kabuki, but it's very similar to passing down the elder and gyoji names in sumo. since_94 650 Posted December 11, 2019 He looks like a great family man and seems to be a very likable sort. Impossible not to admire his indomitable fighting spirit over a long career, too. Akinomaki 40,472 Posted September 6, 2020 (edited) Nakamura (Yoshikaze) on the 1st took part remote in the press conference for the foundation of the general incorporated association APOLLO PROJECT, one thing they'll do is to support athletes in their 2nd career. Yoshikaze while studying at Nittaidai had also thought about becoming a teacher home in Oita, rather than going into sumo. In January he wants to take part as student in the first term of the then starting education business A-MAP (Athlete Mindset Apollo Project), to learn something helpful as advice to rikishi for their 2nd career: "There is much to look forward to. As first term student I want to learn properly, find my own strong points and connect to the next step." "In the sumo world, the most severe is what comes after retiring. Only a few can stay. For the young ones, but also for the sekitori there is no guarantee to remain in this world. If they think I'm the right person, I'd like to be able to give them advice." http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202009010000416.html o Edited September 14, 2020 by Akinomaki 5
