Kintamayama 44,220 Posted September 5, 2019 (edited) I think this warrants a separate thread, as Yoshikaze's situation is pretty bad. Probably kyujo, far from fit, drop to Makushita, and he'll retire. It's not me speculating, but some online papers are pretty sure this is going to happen. We'll know in a couple of hours if he's out of the basho, and if he's out, probably sooner than later, an intai announcement. Rocks 1,804 Posted September 5, 2019 I don't see him retiring yet. If he were he would probably not have waited too long after the surgery to announce. He had to know he would not be ready for this basho regardless so realizing he can't compete this time doesn't mean much toward the decision.

The announcement may have been delayed until he was going to drop out of the paid ranks and all of the kabu/transition details were in place. This is not a surprise announcement. Yoshikaze has owned the kabu for 5 years now so I don't think that will be an issue. And if they had made the decision months ago why not announce it after surgery to allow the process to go forward? It's not like he was ever going to be ready to compete this basho so why wait if when he would drop didn't change. Even with a 0-0-15 here he'll still be in the paid ranks till the start of Kyushu right?
Asapedroryu 227 Posted September 6, 2019 The Tachiai post now says to disregard the information. Anyway, if he is kyujo, then i hope he does retire. At 37 he has passed the age most top division rikishi retires, so to see him struggling in 3rd division would make no sense and would just be sad (a bit like Aminishiki, but at least he was getting paid). WAKATAKE 2,614 Posted September 6, 2019 Sanspo and Hochi both have articles about Yoshikaze retiring, but they are purely speculation at this point, as no official announcement is made yet.

Eikokurai 3,433 Posted September 6, 2019 (edited) I hope he retires. It’s not been pleasant watching him over the past year or so. Far too many times he was in the dohyo in body only. He seems like a prime candidate for getting CTE. Edited September 6, 2019 by Eikokurai

code_number3 694 Posted September 6, 2019 Takekaze has retired and yoshikaze (shortly) will retire, and oguruma oyakata will reach 65 in 3 years. Will any one of them will succeed oguruma or it will branch out?

Oguruma-oyakata thinks Yoshikaze is in a conflict now, whether to go on or quit - and says he'll leave it to the man himself. Yoshikaze is still in hospital and entering later is seen as very unlikely. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909060000663.html Edited September 6, 2019 by Akinomaki 1

Nantonoyama 239 Posted September 6, 2019 He could wait until Monday or Tuesday after the tournament (so before the banzuke committee) so that the kabu borrower can have one more basho as oyakata, and he gets some more money from salaries, bonuses and kabu loan... It's vacant - the borrower (ex-Sadanofuji) has already switched to another kabu.
Rocks 1,804 Posted September 6, 2019 Since Yoshikaze has already gone kyujo for the basho there is no need to announce anything. Is he retiring? Yes. But I don't think there will be any official announcement till the paychecks stop.

dada78641 884 Posted September 12, 2019 I was a little shocked to see him retiring. I mean, sure I haven't seen him fight for a while but I assumed he was injured or somewhere in lower juryo temporarily. It's always weird when a wrestler who's been a makunouchi mainstay for years decides to quit. Fortunately, the sumo circle of life continues as always. (Shin juryo Kaishou/魁勝.) :)
