2019 World Sumo Championships

Event poster by the Japan Sumo Federation: http://nihonsumo-renmei.jp/news2/2019世界相撲選手権ポスター.pdf

This takes place October 12/13 in Sakai, Osaka, having been moved there at very short notice (early June) from its originally scheduled Hawaii location.

Apparently with an additional weight class for both men and women, assuming that piece of information hasn't also been superseded since earlier this year:

(Who had the bright idea to have smaller weight ranges for the middleweight categories than for the higher light-heavyweight ones?)

That's apparently been fixed at least for the men by now; the lightweight/middleweight demarcation is now at 85 kg rather than 80. Probably more sensible for reasons of historical continuity as well, IIRC lightweight previously also went up to 85 kg before the middle/light-heavy split.

The squad for the Japanese team was announced by the Nihon Sumo Renmei last month:

Today's planned junior action has fallen victim to typhoon Hagibis; all matches have been postponed until Sunday, where they intend to get through all junior and senior competitions by starting 90 minutes earlier (at 08:30) than originally scheduled and presumably finishing a lot later.

For reference, a post-event party for the participating teams was originally scheduled for 18:00. I suppose that'll rather be 20:00 or later now.

Well, I don't think I'll be watching that, now or later. Basically impossible to have any idea what's going on, given the lack of sound and on-screen graphics of any kind and no online resources such as start lists or tournament draws to help make sense of it.

Edit: Well, after 45 minutes there's now garblegarblesoundgarble available, not that it has improved the experience all that much.

Some assorted results, missing foreign names.

Igarashi won adult HW gold for Japan, while it was silver for Kurokawa at openweight and Osanai at ligh heavyweight--Osanai lost to a Russian who actually had 'traditional' sumo form. Russia won the adult men's team competition, beating Japan 2-1 in the final. Igarashi lost the first match despite being in a dominant position for most of it, substitute Miwa won the second, then Saigo lost the third to give it to Russia.

Hanada won openweight junior gold again, Kawabuchi won HW gold (with a dameoshi and post-match stare included, not sure what his problem was), and Kitano won LW gold. Japan won the team competition, beating Mongolia 3-0 in the final.

Not sure what event this is---part of the worlds? Either way, some more international amasumo action in Japan. Warning of major injury at 13:05--no stretcher on hand, so they 'tarp' him out.

Can you spot Kokkai?

5 of the 16 made it to the podium. The other 4 were 3rd places in the juniors.

The 2 Asahigaoka high Mongolians Ochil-kun and Munkh-kun (2nd year) were not satisfied to finish runner-up: the Mongolian team with the 2 on position 2 and 3 lost 0-3 to Japan in the final. Ochil-kun also finished 3rd in the individual heavy weight division. http://www.townnews.co.jp/0607/2019/11/02/504678.html
