Retirees after Aki 2019

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Again a bit early, but on NHK's Hifumin Nyanburari today about the cats in Arashio-beya they told that bg Fukugoriki will retire after the Aki basho and return to Fukushima to become peach farmer, after been away from the dohyo for over a year. He's the one to  care for Mugi, the cat that never leaves the rikishi big room and "entered" the heya when he was fresh in the heya as well - the program was about: How do I tell my cat. https://www2.nhk.or.jp/hensei/program/p.cgi?area=001&date=2019-08-05&ch=10&eid=28884&f=etc

Pull a quick nekodamashi and run out the door while it’s distracted.

In July, Mugi was taken to a vet after his (was it a male cat? I don't actually know...) health deteriorated; a malignant tumour was found in his lung and adenocarcinoma was diagnosed. Sadly, he died on September 5th.

Leaving the heya for the last time:

Kasugakuni had his last bout today and retires. He was tsukebito to one after the other Hakuho, Harumafuji and now Kakuryu, against whom he had a bout in 2004 Aki. He entered Kasugayama-beya after graduating from Nisshou gakuen high school, where he was a regular in the baseball team of this baseball stronghold school. Plans for after intai are no fixed yet, he also may return to Miyazaki and teach sumo to the local kids. http://hochi.news/articles/20190921-OHT1T50137.html

Kasugakuni topped out at Ms1e in 2009.  How must that feel to get as close as you can get to sekitori and not make it?  According to the db, he stayed in upper Ms for five more years before the long slide.  But to be associated with three Yokozuna, that's a real honor.

Even harder to swallow is the fact Wakakirin was dismissed before the March Basho and the Juryo 1 West slot was left blank. He was Ms1e with 69 of 70 possible sekitori spots filled. Poor guy.

D: noooooooooooo

If I'm not mistaken, that leaves Wakaichirō as the sole American sumotori (even though his shusshin is Nagasaki prefecture)?

After sekitori-experienced Yoshikaze (-> Nakamura-oyakata), Homarefuji (-> Tateyama-oyakata) and Daikiho, the full list of retirements for Aki 2019 includes 12 more rikishi:

Irie (Tamanoi) - link
Sadanosato (Sakaigawa)
Musashikuni (Musashigawa) - link
Kasugakuni (Nakagawa) - link
Fujitaisei (Fujishima) - link
Akashiryu (Tagonoura)
Amatsukasa (Irumagawa)
Tokiryu (Isenoumi)
Wakasatake (Nishiiwa)
Surugafuji (Azumazeki)
Kotosumida (Sadogatake)
Fukugoriki (Arashio) - link

(For trivia-minded folks, as a retirement list with rikishi from all different stables, this one with 15 is the longest since Hatsu 2011 which had 18 or 19, depending on how one wants to count Hoshikaze.)

Things in common: I´ve found out that these two same time retirees joined Makuuchi also in the same time - in Natsu 2013.

Some danpatsu-shiki pictures here, starting with Irie, who joined Tamanoi-beya after graduating from Kyushu Joho university. Much of his eight-year career was spent in Makushita, but that proved to be his wall, reaching a highest rank of Makushita 3.

Spoiler

With his stablemates Horyuyama and Fujiazuma.

Sometimes the tokoyama is called upon to repair the severed mage after the danpatsu-shiki, so that the retiring rikishi can keep it in a display case. Tamanoi-beya's Tokotsuka took care of Irie's mage.

Fukugoriki retires after 14 years, having fallen off the banzuke after a year out of action, which I understand was due to some kind of thoracic vertebrae injury. He won the Sandanme yusho in 2017 Nagoya, and earlier reached a highest rank of Makushita 5.

Now to the Fujishima-beya senshuraku party for the danpatsu-shiki of Fujitaisei, who retires after nine years on the dohyo.

Spoiler

Fujitaisei and Itadaki made their debut together in the 2010 Haru basho. Here they pose for a picture following Fujitaisei's final bout, which he won to finish his career with a kachi-koshi.

Kasugakuni's danpatsu-shiki took place at the Kawasaki Nikko hotel in Kanagawa prefecture. Over 11 of his 19 years in ozumo were spent in the Makushita ranks; as mentioned by others above he reached the top rank in the 2009 Haru basho, going up to fight two Juryo bouts. Among his opponents in that basho was Kaonishiki, and a decade later he turned out to be the final opponent of Kasugakuni's career, which he rounded off with a win.

Danpatsu-shiki. The gyoji guiding the participants looks like Kimura Satoshi, but if so then I have no idea why a Makushita gyoji is wearing the outfit of a Makuuchi gyoji.
