What rikishi do you miss the most?

Recommended Posts

I remembered how much i miss Takanoyama after watching that tribute video of his on youtube, and then thought that there's probably still a Harumafuji-shaped hole in Sumo today, at least for me.

Harumafuji for sure.

I miss Terunofuji in good shape too. Hopefully he'll get there.

I miss the old Tochiozan a lot.

I miss Ichinojo too.

The Osunaarashi from 2014-15.  Unfortunately that person is in the past.

Asashoryu... I know that he was a jack@$$ but he did make things interesting on the dohyo.

I'd go with Ura, same as Akinomaki.

If I have to pick a retired rikishi I'd pick Kisenosato, if he took the time to actually heal the injury properly who knows where he'd be now.

Haven't been following sumo long, but I'll miss the 'kaze's (Yoshi and Take) and the 'zan's (Tochio and Shoho).  I think everyone will miss Hattorizakura.

totally agree

...and Takakeisho (for this basho, if that counts) - missing him really hurts

Takanohana and Akebono. The thrilling Bouts they had in the 90's (24-24).

I get why you said Kaio. What I don't get is why you didn't say Kotomitsuki... (just curious)

I am contractually obliged to say Harumafuji (former Ama). ;-)

I miss him because he is gone.  I can't see him fight down in the lower divisions (like Ura).  I can't see him ringside as one of the judges (like Kaio).  He is missing and he is missed.

I had about a 25 year sumo gap from the late 70's to the early 2000's.  I'm with Akinomaki.  The only rikishi I miss are the guys from the 70's that I did not watch struggling thru  their declining years.

He was one of the very first wrestlers i noticed when i started watching Sumo regularly, back in 2011 or so i think it was, and he was an old veteran even then.  There's another rikishi in my mind from that time but sadly i don't remember his name, all i have to go on is that he was stoutly built rather than fat, had a strong tachi-ai, worked the belt and never used henka, he also had the most elegant bow of any rikishi i have seen.

Homasho!  That's him :)  Thanks for reminding me as i'd have never got it.  He was another of the first few rikishi that stood out for me.

So many. Akinoshima, Kotonishiki, Tochiazuma, Wakanosato, Tosanoumi, Bushuyama and of course Asashoryu. I have probably forgetten about thirty more that I miss too. Natsukashii!

You all are forgetting Takamisakari...and because he's only one of many, i'll go with the missed active rikishi and Ura. With Enho, Ishiura, Kotoeko and Terutsuyoshi, he'd be the salt in the chanko.

I miss basically all of them from time I first started watching properly, but for now I’ll just mention the European guys who were in Makuuchi: Kotooshu, Baruto, Roho, Hakurozan, Kokkai.

It was exciting seeing that diversity in sumo when I started watching and totally unexpected. These were guys with beards or so bald they could barely form a mage, and of course Kotooshu’s physique was notably different from all the Japanese. It even confused me a little at first because they all had Japanese names (I wasn’t aware of shikona at the time). These days there are a few non-Asian faces around, but they’re only getting older and aren’t being replaced by new recruits. Perhaps people who are new to sumo now see Tochinoshin and Aoiyama and react the same way I did, but to me it does feel as if the “European era” is drawing to a close.

I would say Terao, Kirishima and of course, Chiyonofuji. I must be getting old!

Feeling my age here, Chiyonofuji, Hokutenyu, Konishiki, Mitoizumi.

Most: Asashoryu, Hokutoriki

Fun to have back: Kotooshu, Baruto, Roho, Aran 2.0, Kitataiki

Sad to have been robbed of their then future versions: Wakanoho, Tokusegawa

Sad that he never existed: Wakanosato's evil twin brother Satanowaco
