I notice that Homarefuji is still participating. He won today down in Jonidan.

He has been dropping like a rock for almost 2 years.  He is getting up in years, but it looks like he may be working on a chronic injury or illness problem.

Freed by my new VPN, I’m watching live sumo earlier than ever before. I feel like a naughty boy.

Ikioi loses but looks more sprightly than in recent basho so that’s good. Hopefully he can consolidate in Juryo for a bit while he works on regaining his full strength.

Tochinoshin looks relaxed and content waiting in the wings for the dohyo-iri.

Air Ikioi takes its maiden Nagoya 2019 flight...

Despite today's loss, I think he will go KK.  He looks healthy.

Enho stood beside Kaisei is a sight to behold. It’s like an ESL flashcard for ‘big’ and ‘small’.

Poor effort from Kotoyuki. He didn’t even make it to the first row. Is he hurt?

I have this image of Shanghai police breaking your door down to arrest you for the illegal use of VPN .  :-P  Get it while you can.

Did Enho look heatlhy?   I missed the match.

I only caught what came through in glitches, but I think he used his taped up side in the winning move (don’t hold me to that though).

Great debut from Takagenji. Nishikigi had him there.

Ichinojo has been cupping by the looks of it.

Tochinoshin continues to struggle against Endo.

Asanoyama shows his win against Goeido in May was no fluke.

Masaru is, as we in NE England would say, a well meaning Gobshite. I actually enjoyed his little bout recreation's...most amusing(Laughing...)

Great to see Hakuyozan back and grabbing a first win after that horrendous injury.

I love how Abi went for the pull against Hakuho. As if that was going to work ...

His injured shoulder is heavily bandaged but he could move pretty well and even used his arm to win. Check out Kintamayama's video, he says it all better than me and can eat with chopsticks like a boss...

Besides the usual favorites, I loved the energy from Myogiryu, Chiyotairyu, and Kotoeko today. Myogiryu made quick work of Shimanoumi, Chiyotairyu's one trick still works, and Kotoeko is looking balanced and slippery as ever. Glad to see Kaisei can hold on for a "longer" bout like that too, maybe he's back to his good form.

I hope Takagenji came to stay in makuuchi. He looks very promising, strong and confident. I was surprised when he managed to recover at the edge but I guess the little bit of extra motivation in his makuuchi debut got him the win against Nishikigi.

1. Physics-disabled Ichinojo... :-/

2. Enho Baggins got a good start on his way up Mount Doom

3. Asanoyama!

4. Hakuho unreadable... he looked vulnerable against Abi, but sometimes he goes 15-0 while looking vulnerable.

5. Kakuryu is on pace for his trademark 10-win streak followed by an 0-5 collapse.

I absolutely love the way Enho and Endo won their bouts. Making it look so effortless, especially Endo.

I'm glad to see Kaisei starting strong, looking forward to a strong basho by the gentle giant.

Speaking of strong starts, Takayasu made a pretty good statement with his first win. Of course it's too early to tell how his basho will go.

Asanoyama showjng that he wasn't just a fluke. I mean yes it was Goeido, but stiill, beating an Ozeki on the opening day is not a bad start.

As a Kakuryu partisan, I'm biased in his favor. However, I think it's fair to say that Kakuryu's matches can be broadly divided into three categories--

1)Textbook, technical domination.

2)Screws up badly, but manages to escape with a win by not panicking in the scramble.

3)Screws up badly and is embarrassingly defeated. Looks crappy doing it, too.

I guess once in a while he'll lose a major mawashi war to one of the handful of guys who are on his level working the inside(The match vs. Hakuho in March being a good example), but those are pretty rare.

It's one of my fondest wishes to see a few more #1's from him each tournament, and a couple fewer #2's and #3's. I don't see it happening, though.

Kaisei had better watch his legs today. Ashitori attempt by Enho looks highly likely.

I don't think he can lift Kaisei's leg, with that injury his ashitori chances are even lower.

I believe this is the first real skilled big man test for Enho.
