The Aussies are afraid of England’s batting power so they want to put them under pressure by making them chase. No matter. England’s bowlers will/might/probably won’t restrict them to a modest total. ;)

Ok, Tomokaze will never take the yusho in this basho.   I said the same thing about Asanoyama in the last basho.

I don't know about others but this basho seems to lack the usual drama.   It's going to be Hak and Kak show down in the end.

England are flat track bullies. If this is a flat track they will undoubtedly win, and then go on to lose at Lords because it has never been a flat track. But if Starc fires tonight Australia will win regardless

I cannot make heads or tails of it. Now he doesn't seem (to my untrained eyes) injured, knees and foot seem solid. Is this bad decisions and technique?

He is gona to drop the basho. At least he said to Georgian sources that,  if he loses to Asanoiama, he leaves. May be he is injured, but just before the basho he was in Georgia. That means lot of food, wine and no training whatsoever. Result - 0-5

NHK has introduced a new app which allows users to watch replays of daily (Top Division) bouts.  As with most things digital, there is a wealth of information to be mined.  We are now able to see which bouts are garnering the most interest.  What is interesting is that Enho's bouts are regularly the top watched bouts, which for some of us Forum members should come as no surprise.  Enho is indeed (usually, at least) a force of nature, and his fighting spirit and technique make up for his small size.  That makes for some entertaining sumo.

But this trend also reveals that the bouts of the top dogs in the Top Division are no longer on people's radar, which may suggest that members of the old guard are no longer creating the excitement that sumo fans crave.  This is yet another indication that there is a generational shift afoot.

Today, Murray Johnson commented that during Hakuho's dohyoiri ring-entering ceremony, there are more fan cries for Enho than for Hakuho.  While that doesn't seem quite so obvious to me (fans can – and certainly do – cheer hard for Enho during the general Makuuchi dohyoiri), if what Mr. Johnson says is true or becomes more obvious, Hakuho may feel that his deshi is stealing his limelight.

Nope, it’s in japanese. It is also a website. you can go to nhk.jp/sports and choose the “all makuuchi matches replay” things.

Tomokaze is having a great basho so far. Looks really confident and he has plenty of technique to go with his strength. Really wonder when his KK streak is going to end.

On the other end of the spectrum though, Tochinoshin and Tamawashi are doing terribly. Honestly wouldn't surprise me if they contemplated retirement.

While you don't see taping, reports state that Tochinoshin injured his left shoulder just prior to the start of the tournament.  It would appear that his favourite left outside grip attack is not able to deliver this tournament.

All that cricket babbling makes me wish the Vogons were real. Yes, it would mean the destruction of earth in favour of a hyperspace express route, but it would also mean the end of cricket, which is a small price to pay.

 

Enho and Terutsuyoshi make sumo so much more entertaining, simply unreal what they pull off. It's a shame they didn't win the most spirited rikishi ranking today.

That was the most annoyed  WO TSUITE i ever heard. Made my day.

Why do people assume that rikishi will retire when they're wrestling through injuries that aren't career ending? Tochinoshin and Tamawashi both have a Yusho and multiple kinboshi in their mochi-kyuukin, and earn > $30k USD just by showing up to the basho; that doesn't even account for any kensho (assuming they eventually win a couple...). As long as they're sekitori, they would be walking away from a good amount of money by retiring.

I stopped watching after Mitakeumi's loss yesterday.   The rest of bouts were predictable - Hak, Kak to win for the eventual showdown for the yusho.    I find young and up and coming ones more interesting to follow, Tomokaze, e.g..   And Enho?  If I must pick one bout to watch per day, it'd be his match against anyone.   It may be a different story if Takakeisho or other Japanese rikishi is making a run at the yusho.   I think more fans will follow that.

I hear you regarding the predictability of the final bouts.  

Takakeisho would definitely attract a lot of attention from Japanese sumo fans, but Enho is an anomaly in a world of giants, and given that he has made it to the Top Division, he would still probably get more replay views than Takakeisho.  His bouts are usually noteworthy from the point of view of speed and skill.  Takakeisho's bouts, on the other hand, are pretty straight forward (predictable?) – can't say I am a big fan of pusher/thrusters, and I would hazard a guess that many others feel the same way.  

If I had to pick a bout to replay, I would gravitate towards the unpredictable ones.  Enter Enho!

P.S., I still love watching replays of Takanoyama's old bouts.  Same difference.

Woo, busy morning coming over to babysit Gramma and do some shooting, so I wasn't able to post. Well. I guess all I really have to say is that having Enho and Terutsuyoshi in makuuchi has made lower maegashira a hot-spot for entertainment. I really hope these guys can hang around because they're bringing something I hadn't even realized I was missing until they arrived.

I’ve always loved the little guys in sumo, but oddly haven’t paid as much attention to Terutsuyoshi as I have to Enho. Now If he just lost a little weight ...

Enjoy while you/we can.   Little guys career don't last as long as the big ones.  Their injuries seem to be more severe.   We all cheered wildly for Ura but look where he is now.  Enho, I am afraid, may be a major injury waiting to happen.  Until then, enjoy we should.

I doubt if Enho getting more attention will bother Hakuho at all. He knows that training with him has done much to increase Enho's effectiveness and I'm sure he's very proud of that fact. Hakuho, who has been far more successful than any rikishi in history, only cares about winning yushos. He's expected to get the championship in every tournament he enters and when he does (which is now almost a routine occurrence), I'm sure he'll be more than happy to have his success equalled and maybe even overshadowed by Enho's--which so far has been totally unexpected and to a great part, due to his efforts.

Hakuho has plans to open his own heya and recruited Enho for that purpose, so it would be odd if he was bothered about his deshi getting a bit of publicity. As an Oyakata his whole job will be to get the likes of Enho up to the level where they’re getting public attention. Also, over the years Hakuho has been happy to give advice and urge other rikishi, especially the Mongolians, on to better things. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t in fact feel a lot of pride at seeing Enho doing so well.
