Amamaniac 2,078 Posted July 20, 2019 Despite having an overwhelming 56-6 win record over Kotoshogiku (East M5), Hakuho lacked the ability, strength, health(?) to defeat him when it truly mattered for his 43rd yusho hopes. Given his poor performance today, I fully concur with #robnplunder that Kakuryu should "finish" Hakuho tomorrow. Even if by some miracle, Hakuho wins the official bout, Kakuryu is both healthy and is doing good sumo enough to win a playoff bout IF if comes to that. Furthermore, given how Hakuho tore his bicep the last time the two Yokozunas met, I am pretty certain that Hakuho will not risk re-injury by straining his arms... Amamaniac 2,078 Posted July 20, 2019 Aside from the obvious Sansho candidates (i.e. Terutsuyoshi and Tomokaze), do others on the Forum feel that conditional nods may go to Endo (M2w) and Hokutofuji (M1w)? My gut feeling is that Makuuchi joi wrestlers need to be exceptionally good to warrant consideration...

Enho may deserve it. Ginosho is for techniques and for a tiny guy like Enho to get KK takes a miracle of techniques. The other sansho may go to Terutsuyoshi, Tomokaze, or Hokutofuji (he'd need one more win). Disappearing act prize should go to Takagenji. Toyonoshima gets back from death prize. Kotoyuki gets a thank you prize from the crowd for not running any of them over. 1

Rainoyama 1,157 Posted July 20, 2019 I really like what they are doing with the last day match ups lately, waiting a little bit more is a good move. Tomorow will be fun !
Rainoyama 1,157 Posted July 20, 2019 (edited) Enho was in tears after getting his first makuuchi kk today 'I could bring good news to everybody who supported me. I am happy" he sobbed when asked about his feelings. It took three times to the young rikishi to get it right at the tachi 'I was feeling tense and stiff because of the stress, without a thought I just smashed into my opponent with all I had" analyzed the 24 years old. Yokozuna Hakuho, Enho's anideshi and mentor showed some tough love to his young protege the other day telling him 'If you lose don't come back'. 'I kept those words in mind and fought until the end' explained Enho. When he learned about Enho victory and KK "Proud dad" Hakuho welcomed him back with a "congratulations" followed by an handshake. The article says that Enho's bouts are always the most viewed on the new NHK replay platform. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201907200000943.html Edited July 20, 2019 by Rainoyama 8

I was pleased to see that Aoiyama (one of the 7-7 rikishi) caught a break this time. Because Abi (7-7) hadn’t fought Kotoshogiku (also 7-7) yet (and had already faced Aoiyama), Aoiyama gets Daieisho who has already gotten his KK. Not that I think anything fishy will happen, but I suspect Aoiyama will have a lot more motivation than will Daieisho even with the sanyaku nod on the line. Dwale 419 Posted July 20, 2019 Enho cried, his family watching at home probably cried, the audience cried...good for him. Man, did he ever have to work for it. Let's hope it's the first of many. Well, I figured if Kotoshogiku was gonna beat Hakuho, this was a good time to do it. So, that was fun. Now we come down to the wire, with Hakuho needing to force a play-off if he wants that title, which we all know he does. But can he do it? You can never count him out, but this time it's an uphill battle. I'm looking forward to seeing some chonmage in serious disarray tomorrow. Kanpai!
Philioyamfugi 378 Posted July 20, 2019 Nice double stack of kensho and a kimboshi for Kotoshugiku..not a bad day at all. Fights Abi both for KK..should be good. Kudos for Abi for a chance of KK for a shin komosubi.

Rainoyama 1,157 Posted July 20, 2019 (edited) My boy Hokutofuji on his 9th win obtained against lower makuuchi surprise this tournament : Terutsuyoshi. 169 cm back of tricks Terutsuyoshi can execute all kinds of tachi ai which makes him hard to deal with, Hokutofuji didn't get fooled today though "I managed to execute a tachi ai that allowed me to react to anything he'd try" he analyzed. M1W Hokutofuji also mentioned the pride of being a jo-i rikishi and defending that honor against rikishi from the bottom half such as Makujiri Terutsuyoshi. "Being a jo-i rikishi comes with a constant pride, I was determined. It's a completely different world. No way I could lose this one" explained Hokutofuji. Hokutofuji's rival, friend and fellow jo-i jin Mitakeumi agrees, "Show him the strength of a jo-i rikishi, you always do so don't lose ok ?" Mitakeumi told Hokutofuji before his bout today. "As expected there's a big gap between the top and the bottom of Makuuchi, Mitakeumi's word gave me strength" reacted Hokutofuji. I just wish Mitakeumi would stop losing to lower ranked rikishi he can beat instead of talking about pride though... https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201907200000998.html Edited July 20, 2019 by Rainoyama 3

Amamaniac 2,078 Posted July 20, 2019 Sorry to bring this up at this stage in the game, but on day 13, Hakuho took down Myogiryu in the way that other sekitori were trying to do against Enho, i.e., with a strangle hold on his neck from behind his head. The kimarite announced was kotenage, but Hiro Morita kept "hearing" and saying kubinage. Watching the replay, I was inclined to agree with Hiro-san on this one. Although Hakuho did have his left arm under Myogiryu's right upper arm, his right arm was around Myogiryu's throat, and all the force in the nage throw descended on Myogiryu's head (there was no arm bar involved). Anyone else feel that this kimarite should have be reviewed and revised?
Thelone 6 Posted July 20, 2019 So what's the deal with Onosho (and airline food... ok no)? The guy showed great potential in 2017, got injured, and since then has been meandering in the middle of makuuchi and pretty underwhelming to say the least. Did he come back too early from injury, or was it just a lucky first run and he's just where he should be now?

I am not familiar with the intricacies of the determination of kimarite, but to me it did not look like a nage at all, more of a kind of twist-down. But if, I agree it should be kubinage. Akinomaki 39,776 Posted July 20, 2019 (edited) For giving Myogiryu's head an extra push after smashing him down (alternative extra shove), Hakuho was criticized by deputy chief shimpan Takadagawa: "Ugly. He has to stop that." http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2019/07/19/kiji/20190719s00005000320000c.html We can expect the YDC issue another official complaint (because of all this NSK disliked behavior, tabloids assume he will be denied the ichidai toshiyori status) Edited July 20, 2019 by Akinomaki
