Amamaniac 2,078 Posted July 20, 2019 Despite having an overwhelming 56-6 win record over Kotoshogiku (East M5), Hakuho lacked the ability, strength, health(?) to defeat him when it truly mattered for his 43rd yusho hopes. Given his poor performance today, I fully concur with #robnplunder that Kakuryu should "finish" Hakuho tomorrow. Even if by some miracle, Hakuho wins the official bout, Kakuryu is both healthy and is doing good sumo enough to win a playoff bout IF if comes to that. Furthermore, given how Hakuho tore his bicep the last time the two Yokozunas met, I am pretty certain that Hakuho will not risk re-injury by straining his arms... Amamaniac 2,078 Posted July 20, 2019 Aside from the obvious Sansho candidates (i.e. Terutsuyoshi and Tomokaze), do others on the Forum feel that conditional nods may go to Endo (M2w) and Hokutofuji (M1w)? Enho may deserve it. Ginosho is for techniques and for a tiny guy like Enho to get KK takes a miracle of techniques. The other sansho may go to Terutsuyoshi, Tomokaze, or Hokutofuji (he'd need one more win). Disappearing act prize should go to Takagenji. Toyonoshima gets back from death prize. I was pleased to see that Aoiyama (one of the 7-7 rikishi) caught a break this time. Because Abi (7-7) hadn’t fought Kotoshogiku (also 7-7) yet (and had already faced Aoiyama), Aoiyama gets Daieisho who has already gotten his KK. Not that I think anything fishy will happen, but I suspect Aoiyama will have a lot more motivation than will Daieisho even with the sanyaku nod on the line. Well, I figured if Kotoshogiku was gonna beat Hakuho, this was a good time to do it. So, that was fun. Now we come down to the wire, with Hakuho needing to force a play-off if he wants that title, which we all know he does. But can he do it? I noticed a trend: whenever Kakuryu or anther yokozuna/ozeki/rikishi did well, Hakuho was either absent or did poorly in the last 2 or 3 days of the basho. M1W Hokutofuji also mentioned the pride of being a jo-i rikishi and defending that honor against rikishi from the bottom half such as Makujiri Terutsuyoshi. "Being a jo-i rikishi comes with a constant pride, I was determined. It's a completely different world. No way I could lose this one" explained Hokutofuji. Hokutofuji's rival, friend and fellow jo-i jin Mitakeumi agrees, "Show him the strength of a jo-i rikishi, you always do so don't lose ok ?" Mitakeumi told Hokutofuji before his bout today. "As expected there's a big gap between the top and the bottom of Makuuchi, Mitakeumi's word gave me strength" reacted Hokutofuji. The kimarite announced was kotenage, but Hiro Morita kept "hearing" and saying kubinage. Watching the replay, I was inclined to agree with Hiro-san on this one. Although Hakuho did have his left arm under Myogiryu's right upper arm, his right arm was around Myogiryu's throat, and all the force in the nage throw descended on Myogiryu's head (there was no arm bar involved). The guy showed great potential in 2017, got injured, and since then has been meandering in the middle of makuuchi and pretty underwhelming to say the least. I am not familiar with the intricacies of the determination of kimarite, but to me it did not look like a nage at all, more of a kind of twist-down. But if, I agree it should be kubinage.
