A rikishi injured on Day 8 and unable to win at straight-up sumo resorts to henka after several losses in a row and a questionable call (and with a prestige rank on the line)? Colour me shocked! Shocked I say!!

A great basho for the beginning of a new imperial era. The future looks nice, once the old guard has retired. Meisei, Mitakeumi, Asanoyama, Takakeisho... are going to give us great moments of sumo.

If you think this was a good basho,  it can only get better.  As for me, this basho was sub-par and left a foul taste in my mouth.

It wasn’t even an all-in henka. He took contact on the arm and Kakuryu effectively dived into a headlock before Tochinoshin had completely sidestepped. Not quite a HNH but not quite a full on henka either.

Are you serious? Tochinoshin’s ruined the yūshō race.

Yes, i am serious.

No, Kakuryu ruined the yusho race by losing to M3 Tamawashi and M5 Myogiryu prior to that.

This basho is not a good one but will be remembered for a long time because it's the first one viewed by the president of USA.

It's not a good basho because:

1, the much expected and hyped new ozeki turned out to mess up the schedule by re-entering and re-kyujo giving two default wins.

2, mediocre performance by ozekis.

3, bad referee decision on critical bout.

4, "tiger head but snake tail" performances of Tochi and Kaku ruined the yusho race.

5, Day-14 yusho is supposed to be a strong yusho but actually a weak one at only 12 wins.

I would say Ichinojo not getting scheduled against Hakuho last basho was a much bigger sin than any of those 5 but then again I enjoyed both bashos.

Actually, I attribute it more to the fact that all six sekitori were ranked M9 and below.  That way they could be conveniently lumped together.

And still, I don't know if that convenient pairing of all 7-7 wrestlers has happened before.

Channel 4 when they covered sumo in the 1980s used to say “by tradition all those with scores of 7-7 are matched against each other in playoffs.” You just assumed at the time that they knew what they were talking about. Now I know better. Nice idea though.

For the most part, Day 15 matches are "Let's get this over with and get outta here" affairs with only minor effects on the next banzuke.  The 7-7 matches add some excitement, but the delayed scheduling to get as many as possible is a bit of a pain.

6. Hakuho wasn't present.

Congrats to Asanoyama!!! I hope he can show continued success in the sanyaku ranks in Nagoya

I hope we can get one more run of dominance from Hakuho before the 2020 olympics. It's been three years since he's completed three consecutive basho. While the parity is fun and always exciting (whether a good clean basho or messy like this past tourney), there is no dominant force like Hakuho on the horizon and so I wouldn't mind seeing one last run of utter dominance from the boss.

Asanoyama sit down with his oyakata for an light hearted interview today (May 27th). Takasago oyakata ( Former Ozeki Asashio ) stole the show and joked around quite a bit launching sneak attacks on his deshi .

The attack started midway through the interview after Asonayama was asked where he'd put the 317 cm high 228cm large yusho winner portrait " I haven't thought about it at all" answered Asanoyama

"Hey you, You won kensho this tournament right ? Let's install air-conditioning at the heya ! Everyone is hot you know ! And in winter everyone is cold. It's for everyone's sake. You won money this time so let's do this with your money ok ? Me ? I didn't earn anything so... " started the oyakata, causing Asanoyama and the many journalists gathered for the occasion to burst into laugher. The temperature was over 30 again today and everyone in the room was sweating abondantly.

Asanoyama's absorbed the blow and immediately riposted showing he can give back outside of the dohyo as well " Can't you just get Nikkan Sport (where Takasago works as a commentator) to buy it for you ?"

The Oyakata's attack didn't stop there though, when Asanoyama was asked about the possibility of winning back to back yusho, Takasago didn't let his deshi speak and answered the question himself  "Hahahahaha you there, stop asking stupid questions ! you split my sides you idiot ! He was M8 right ? it's not like if he was komusubi or sekiwake. And he only won 7 last basho."

There was no malice though and the oyakata was just giving his deshi some parternal tough love. Asanoyama is the first yusho winner with no sanyaku experience in 58 years and he'll face Jo-i rikishi, sanyaku, Ozeki and Yokuzuna every day for the first time next basho. "At these high ranks getting 8 wins is tough. If he manages to win 8, I'll praise him" said the oyakata.

"I want to flourish at the top and become a figurehead of sumo" said Asanoyama "Except for the fortune and merit" quickly attacked the oyakata continuing his tough love lesson until the end.

I intentionally skipped watching the last two days.

BTW, no one talks about it b/c it happened to Daieisho.   He was robbed of a win by bad judging and finished the basho with 7-8.   It cost him a chance to be a sanyuku for the 1st time.  He's a young kid and hopefully, he will come back stronger in the next basho.

I have nothing against a good old totally unexpected henka. Even in sanyaku. Even with the yusho on the line. what bothers me are rikishis like Chiyoshouma or Ishiura...Im not against henka but against henka abuse...

But let's be honest...If it was Kise instead of Kak...I would love to see the public's reaction...

Are you sure you're a fan of ozumo? Self-flagellation might be more up your street. :-P

I'm enjoying the unpredictability, given most of what I've seen since my return to watching the sport is Hakuko destroying everyone. It's almost certain I think that there will be a period of uncertainty until the old boys are finished and a youngster or two can establish themselves.

Looking back at old records, it wouldn't be that big a surprise to me at all for there to be no Dai-Yok for another few years - after all, such rikishi only appear every decade or two don't they?

It was either that or watch "you-know-who"  to steal the spotlight on 15th day ...  (Shakinghead...).   I promise to watch all 15 days of the next basho.  Having retired, I can stay up as early (2 am) as I want and whenever I want.    Getting old sucks but it has its advantage.

What, is Donarudo Toranpu on a par with Volde... er... He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named now?

Sure, the TV cameras didn't ignore him, but I can assure you that the focus of the show was still the sumo.

What purpose did your boycott serve, other than depriving yourself of the pleasure of watching sumo?

I didn't boycott.  I just had too many other things to watch around that time, like KLPGA golf & Baduk (Go game in Japanese).   Asanoyama vs Tochi disaster gave me an excuse to watch my other loves.   And the yusho race was over on day 14 ....

I wish i could find the topic, like a year ago. when i said that Asanoyama would make Ozeki or Yokozuna one day.

That is not quite happened yet, of course, but who knows, we are much much closer now.

A great Basho nonetheless, exciting sumo, nice stories to be told, etc.

Kakuryu, however, seems to have lost quite a bit of fire...

Click on your profile pic in the upper right corner. Your profile opens. A little below is grey button "See my activity". There you can browse all your comments. With only 120 posts it should be easy to find. Quite nice feature when you want to look up what stupid things you said in the past. At least for me ^^

plz tell me what they said about tochi asanoyama match?

google translate is useless

http://news.livedoor.com/article/detail/16525659/

From what I can glean, on May 27, the YDC gave their verdict on the May tournament saying that the explanations coming from the shimpancho (head judges, esp. Onomatsu) were muddled and insufficient, which caused unnecessary confusion.  Significantly, the incidents in question involved Asanoyama's bouts on Day 11 and Day 13.

Apparently, they had very little to say about Yokozuna Kakuryu, which I had always assumed was their primary focus/raison d'être.
