The managing director was there as well, and an interviewing announcer. Araiso remote - less than half of it is talk by the man himself. Today the 2nd program was posted, the first proper one. Araiso again remote, talked 5 minutes about how he began with sumo in 2nd year primary school, first hating to get that naked, but winning the tournament he entered without much preparation - that kindled his interest in sumo. Interesting that Araiso was speaking about 1.5 times as fast as the announcer. The 2nd part, ask Araiso, had again the Meiji foods managing director, who asked the question(s) instead of someone from the listening public. In the end (not) the song, the theme of Hokuto-no-ken, of which he got that famous yokozuna 3 part kesho mawashi set, presently on display at an exhibition in Usa city. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/lnews/oita/20201016/5070008189.html o oo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2clsrp-Dad0&t=65s Edited November 30, 2020 by Akinomaki

He had it performed live at the party after the danpatsushiki, when he was at the start-line as full fledged oyakata.
Akinomaki 39,770 Posted November 5, 2020 Last episode before the basho, then he is busy. This time not web remote but on the phone. Part 1, since makuuchi and the change of name to Kisenosato, part 2, for the first time actually by a listener: was his most happy moment, like for many rikishi, when he entered juryo? Araiso explained about the change of worlds from below to that of a sekitori, but evaded a clear answer: he went so fast into juryo and then makuuchi, that he had no time to think about joy. The song, Ulfuls: guts da ze - last baseball game in school and he was injured and couldn't compete, his team lost, from the speakers at the school then, this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOd9j32Vysw&t=72s
Akinomaki 39,770 Posted November 27, 2020 Araiso back on radio after the basho, on the phone again. About his rivals from the start in makuuchi, esp. Kotoshogiku. And the yokozuna to look up to at the start, Asashoryu. Listener question: You wrote in your book that Harumafuji had told you, to become yokozuna, you also have to read books - what kind of books did you read, to what effect? Many, leaving the heya calm and relaxed. Song: Country Road from the Anime Mimi wo sumaseba https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYwD_pBgFvs&t=80s

Were they (kind of) friends or supportive towards each other? Somehow I got this impression from reading things about them (one particular instance is when H was really worried about K after that career-ending injury). Of course on the dohyo they were rivals, but I was not following sumo that time so I don't know their relation off dohyo.
Akinomaki 39,770 Posted December 4, 2020 Araiso again on the phone for Kansai radio. 1st part: 4th youngest new sanyaku at age 19; first kinboshi, from Asashoryu. Listener question: What is most important to teach to the young ones? With the obvious answer: the basics. Each one is different, has a different body, different style, so he'll guide him different. The thing to teach 10 deshi out of 10 are the basics, techniques are not necessarily taught in sumo. Shodai has an awful style, a high up tachi-ai and the chin high - things contrary to how sumo should be done, but because he is solid with the basics, he made it to ozeki. Song: OP from the TV film series Kaiketsu Harimao, the version by Michiya Mihashi youtube_query=快傑ハリマオ 三橋 美智也 - it was sung at each senshuraku party of the old Naruto-beya https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrcn1XpvDr8&t=75s

pricklypomegranate 730 Posted February 8, 2021 (edited) Fuji TV ran a "Sumo Greatest Hits" kind of programme just yesterday featuring Kisenosato and Toyonoshima. https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1uT4y1N7eY?from=seopage There are full of hidden gems I'm sure all of you will love, such as Daieisho's ukelele playing, rikishi doing clay pottery and, most importantly, Terao's boy band. It is essential viewing for all sumo fans, especially in this slow news period. Enjoy. Edited February 8, 2021 by pricklypomegranate 4

That's covered in detail in this thread - it is again in the news because now the use of CBD taima products is about to get more restricted: the makers of these products and producers of hemp see their business and traditions endangered. Araiso as their PR man is one of their hopes. The YT channel of Nagoya based Meiji foods announced they'll post the episodes of Araiso-oyakata's yokozuna life-way for those who can't listen to the station, he's their poster character. The managing director seems to have close connections to the local Tokai radio, he posted a remote interview with Araiso about the new radio program. Next April he'll start in the 1 year sports science research master's course. This course is for people with practical experience, independent from their academic background, if they have high level abilities in sports management or as sports coach. Araiso will study in between his work in the NSK. Araiso has finished the 1 year sports science research master's course, his master's thesis is about "A new way to run a sumo-beya". "In a sumo-beya there only is 1 dohyo. During keiko, a long time is just watching. A yokozuna and children can't train on the same space." "In the future, when I have a heya, I want to implement more efficient keiko, having 2 or 3 dohyo. Using video cameras and connect that to coaching. Having the camera at a 50cm different height, a totally different video results. I also studied which camera angle is more useful for coaching." "In sumo, morning training is done on an empty stomach, that is done in no other sports. Chanko nabe is a supreme meal with well balanced nutrition, but before intense training, protein should be supplied, and then a meal afterwards. That is good for the muscles and avoids injuries." "I would be good if a heya has it's own muscle training room." "Due to Corona there were no dinner parties, less going out, I had much time for research." "The costs of running a heya with multiple dohyo, training room and cameras are high. In a future heya, someone will have to search for enterprises that support these activities. Using the PC, knowledge of finances, it would be good if these things would be taught as well. Parents will entrust their kids to such a heya relieved." http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOGH177I80X10C21A2000000/ 9

Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted March 10, 2021 Good stuff. Always been curious what would happen if a heya brought in a training expert from, say American football, and truly modernized training. Didn't Naruto Oyakata also promise to revolutionize sumo training through on his own sports science studies? As far as I can tell through the Naruto-beya documentaries, his main innovation appears to be adding ample Bulgaria-brand yogurt to the diet of his deshi. cyclonicleo 19 Posted March 14, 2021 I really hope he can get the funding together to run a heya just as he wants. That sort of innovation would be very welcome and could lift any rikishi training there.

His relative success points to a success of scouting rather than a success in coaching so far, compared to an older heya like Isegahama which has been pushing sekitori up at the rate of about 1/year. That said I'm equally excited to see Araiso put his plans into action. It makes so much sense when you read it that you've got to wonder why no one's done it before.

Most of the new ideas I noticed from Naruto involved outside activities -- a yearly trip to the mountains for training with judo clubs and some wicked hard hill climbing, e.g. The majority of that is off-limits now because of COVID rules. Seiyashi 4,071 Posted March 21, 2021 NHK ran a feature on Araiso's ottsuke technique today (Haru 2021 nakabi), after the makuuchi dohyo-iri. Araiso spoke about how his famed ottsuke developed as an extension of a hazuoshi attack, but also highlighted the need for the right hand to assist. Using a car analogy, he said that the left hand was the engine, but the right was the handle; the left would be revving uselessly without the right. He also mentioned that he used to be right-handed, but after fracturing his right hand in elementary school playing baseball, he started using his left hand more and more, and now he's in fact left handed.
