PR for Nagoya 2019

They really are early now: on the 21st starts the application period for the pre-advance ticket sales lottery for Nagoya. Usually this takes place during the previous basho - for Natsu it went on till after senshuraku, but this time the period already ends on day 4 of the basho.

Ichinojo did PR this time - these PR videos are with questions to sekitori

The big ticket sales battle takes place during the Natsu basho - not as usual on a Saturday, but on day 12, Thursday, 10 a.m. - till 12:00h no option to select the seat location, only the type of ticket. http://sumo.pia.jp/sumo07.jsp

They also have changed the options to pay: so far you could buy a ticket and select "payment at a convenience store" - in other words, the possibility to abandon the ticket by simply not going there to pay. Now only real credit card and NTT Chokom https://www.chocom.jp/en/ are available, like already for the pre-advance sales lottery. Also, tickets ordered by phone with a special reservation dial have to be payed for within one day or the reservation is canceled - people also here skip their ticket options. http://sumo.pia.jp/info/info-20170116.jsp

The same happens with the tamari-seki lottery by phone application (a phone call from within Japan).: people who have won the chance to buy a ticket don't use it. For Natsu this led to a secondary tamari-seki lottery on the pia site, like the usual ticket lottery for other types of tickets. As far as I know it wasn't announced, and it was for just 2 days  - I found it by chance and got my 2nd ticket for the basho there, for day 9.

They surely will change the tamariseki procedure for Nagoya as well - I have found no mention of it so far. Another change in the pre-advance sales lottery is the possibility to have 6 choices: 6 chances for a ticket on 1 day or tickets for all 6 days, so far it were 3.

The reservation period for groups of 20 or more and travel agencies etc. had already started on Feb. 12th https://www.chunichi.co.jp/event/sumo/reservation/agency/

The pre-advance sales application time has started http://sumo.pia.jp/ticket07.jsp

New is that now also 1, 2 and 3 person masu seat boxes can be selected (not for A rank)- so far it were only the 4 person masu seats, those in the last row are sold for 2 person use. Unlike promised, only 3 choices and so far no option for multiple visits.

Hi Akinomaki.

I have been a sumo fan for 5-6 years now and am planning to travel to Tokyo 2020 as well as the Nagoya Basho before the Olympics. Have already started looking for the best way to get tickets but still have some questions, so would really appreciate any help.

1) I will need 4 chair seats, as my mom and dad can't sit on the floor. So is Arena B actually better than Arena A in Nagoya ?? I understand that Arena A seats are only on the west and east ends of the stadium while Arena B are on the front and back. So Arena B gives me a 50% chance of facing the gyoji whereas Arena A ensures I will be looking at the back of rikishi during the tachiai. How does the front view compare with the fact that Arena B will be farther from the dohyo (cost difference between Arena A and Arena B doesnt matter to me) ??

2) I also understand that its pretty hot in Nagoya at the time of the Basho. Since the ACs are in the back, is there any significant difference in terms of heat between the towards the back Arena B and the closer Arena A??

3) Ideally, I would like to go on Senshuraku but seems like it is very tough to get those tickets. Buysumotickets.com often doesn't even bother to sell arena seats on the final weekend and ticket oosumo seems to sell out in seconds. Are there any other options for a non-Japanese?? Any way for a non-Japanese to apply in the lottery ?? Any idea if things like Voyagin or Viagogo work for Senshuraku?

Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have never been at the Nagoya venue and can only try to answer this question. To apply in the lottery, you have to be able to cope with the Japanese sumo.pia pages and register with some address in Japan (a hotel might do) - but the chances to get tickets for senshuraku are small there as well. There are also phone numbers from Nagoya organizer Chunichi shimbun, also for the Nagoya chaya -  if you speak Japanese, you might be able to reserve tickets there https://www.chunichi.co.jp/event/sumo/ticket-buy.html

Pre-order is also possible with the eplus site, from the 14th till the 22nd https://atom.eplus.jp/sys/main.jsp?prm=U=82:P2=003808:P5=0001:P3=0326:P21=001:P7=1:P6=001:P1=0003:P0=GGWC01:P55=//eplus.jp%2Fsf%2Fdetail%2F0038080001-P0030326

There was something in the news last week about making tickets for a variety of events available for foreigners as well - sumo included - but I don't know the details yet.

About 70 sumo nobori for Nagoya are produced at a traditional shop (all done by manual labor) for dyed goods and flags in Gifu city, established 147 years ago. A nobori is 5.4m high and 90cm wide and colorful.

6min. report from local TV http://www.tokai-tv.com/tokainews/article.php?i=87732&date=20190618

The shop makes sumo-nobori for over 70 years

Rules for nobori:

  • no black for rikishi names, to avoid the image of a kuro-boshi hoshi_kuro.gif - ok for heya of tate-gyoji names
  • no red for the names of the nobori sponsor below, to avoid the image of going into the red
  • no (mizu/water-)blue or (cha/tea-)brown at the strips hanging from the gyoji gumbai part: nothing must hinder (mizu o sasu) or disrupt (cha-cha-ire) the bout

The characters are written in squares in a way to fill every corner: they represent the masu seat boxes filled with spectators. In a shikona, the strokes are written with a slight rising angle to the right, meant as the wish for an upward movement of the rikishi on the next banzuke.

Nobori as a lucky charm are renewed every basho.

Today was the recording of the zenya-sai program for the basho, it will be aired on the zenya, the evening before the basho - only on local TV. Takakeisho was there because he had intended to enter the basho and was still "fighting" about it with with his oyakata - the 4h discussion of the 2 continued after he returned from the TV show
