Yes, but all humans start as tiny pile of cells, forming an asshole (i kid you not). Sadly some stay at that level only with some more cells.

Just one more: since I've seen the "tree" in "Christmas Tree" rendered tsu-ri, why not Tsu run pu ?

Various standards at different times of words being imported.  They shy away from using tsu for just t- now, preferring to-.

The other thing that I just find mind boggling is how the vowel in his name gets thought of as closing to "a" than "u".  I understand the Japanese u is generally extremely reduced, and a long u sounds completely different so they can't emphasize the actuality of a sound there that way, but in my mind using 'ru' makes more sense than 'ra'.  That's actually very standardized in their phonological transformations of English words, but it's one aspect that I can't really understand.

Here's typical coverage from an American news site.  Easy quiz: pick five incorrect/inaccurate statements made by the author or editor.

I refuse to turn off my adblocker, so I guess I won't be reading it on their site.  Maybe someone will quote the parts that are most dubious.

[Deleted. After further thought, I agree my original post was inappropriately political for this forum.]

I am pleased that today’s event went smoothly, and I hope the publicity results in more people becoming knowledgeable sumo fans.

I have a question: will the USA Present Cup be awarded each basho from now on? I hope it will be.

I'm far from being a fan of Donald Trump. That being said, I approved of his appearance on senshuraku. He carried it off with far more respect and dignity than I expected..

Sumo diplomacy as Abe courts Trump, but U.S. leader's tweets may have left Tokyo unnerved

Quote

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday basked in the spotlight of his first state visit to Japan, taking in sumo matches and presenting the champion with a massive President’s Cup after hitting the links earlier in the day with golfing buddy Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and confirming that he would not press the Japanese leader on a trade deal — for now.

Smiling and waving before the roughly 11,500 fans who had crowded into the hallowed Ryogoku Kokugikan, where security was intense, Trump became the first U.S. president to attend such a sumo tournament and, at the end, to step into the ring and present a cup.

Seated on a special sofa-like chair that officials said was to provide him with back support — breaking the custom of sitting cross-legged on a mat — Trump watched five bouts and then, wearing slippers, joined Abe to climb a small portable staircase to enter the dohyō (sumo ring). Inside, he gave a short bow and, grinning widely, presented the 30-kg, 1.4-meter-tall trophy topped with a bald eagle, the U.S. national bird, and with his name emblazoned on its base to the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament champion, rank-and-filer Asanoyama, who had clinched the title Saturday...

I also use an adblocker but I was able to copy and paste most of it:

President Donald Trump's weekend trip to Japan — where he contradicted his national security advisor, backed the murderous North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, and misspelled former vice president Joe Biden's name while calling him "low IQ"— also included a trip to a sumo wrestling stadium.

On Sunday, he presented the "United States President's Cup" — a 60-pound trophy more than four feet tall that Japan made up for the occasion — to Asanoyama, the 25-year-old sumo champion.

"In honor of your outstanding achievement as sumo grand champion, I hereby award you the United States President's Cup," he announced from the wrestling ring.

Trump said he hoped the cup would continue to be awarded for "many hundreds of years."

It was part of a visit to the country's Ryōgoku Kokugikan Stadium, where an estimated 11,500 fans gathered to watch a series of five-minute sumo matches.

Trump's visit to the wrestling match broke several traditions. Foreign leaders do not usually give presentations between matches. And while viewers generally sit on cushions on the ground, called zabutons, Trump and his wife, Melania, were given chairs. The Japan Sumo Association also banned the practice of throwing zabutons into the air as a security precaution, according to the Associated Press.

People who enter the elevated dirt wrestling ring — called a dohyo — are supposed to be barefoot, but Trump wore slippers as he handed out the award. Some members of the Japanese media suggested that the ring would now have to be reconsecrated after Trump's presentation, according to the Washington Post.

According to viewers, Trump didn't appear to pay much attention to the matches. He didn't react to some of the most dramatic moments.

"He didn't smile at all, he didn't do any gestures," Jaime Tiktin told the Post. "It was kind of strange to see him not moving his lips at all."

Presentation between matches? What’s that about?

As for slippers on the dohyo, the gyoji wear them all the time.

Only the tate-gyoji is allowed to wear zouri sandals, and the oyakata, the sekitori class gyoji tabi socks - and the lower gyoji are barefoot  - slippers are only for the guests

The special thing about the slippers this time was that they perfectly matched the shoes in color and material and were also bigger than the grey old ones - not so easy to spot if they have them on, unless they walk

Yes, fair correction. I wasn’t very accurate there. My main point was that people wear some form of footwear all the time.

The shimpan wear zori, as does the riji-cho and other oyakata when making addresses to the audience and awarding prizes.

It is forbidden to bring food and drinks into the kokugikan - nobody usually cares, but this time they brought airport-like equipment to check persons and baggage at the entrance - usually you never wait at the entrance when you pass with your ticket, this time a 500m queue and with the checks it took up to 90min. to get in

20190526-OHT1I50139-N.jpgo AS20190526001393_commL.jpgo  s.jpg

No tea pots, no beer bottles (no chanko) - and the drink vending machines were all kyujo

sty1905260005-g3.jpgo

drinks were only available at the food shops - which had long queues as well

With all this, the usual day at the kokugikan is no fun - in the end I'm glad I got no ticket and didn't have to experience that live - just the right thing to watch on TV

Throwing zabuton was declared a criminal offense

201905270000191-w200_0.jpgo

punished with up to 2 years in prison or a fine up to 3 million yen - and by the NSK: entry refused, never get sold tickets again

What do the other trophy presenters wear?

Yes, and they are also similar in color to the tabi, making them hard to notice sometimes.

As Akinomaki stated, they wear slippers, whether it's Trump, Abe-sori, the Tamari-kai guys, or various ambassadors and other big wigs.

Even though no suspense was left in the day 15 sumo, Trump made senshuraku have high TV ratings of 26.3% (Kansai 24.9) - as usual for the 2nd half of makuuchi - even the 1st half had a quite high 15.9%.   Takakeisho's yusho had 22.6%, his ozeki decider last basho 18.4%. http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2019/05/27/0012370167.shtml

And the peek was - also highly unusual - at the yusho cup presentation: Trump on the dohyo had 30.6% (Kansai 30.0%) http://www.sanspo.com/geino/news/20190527/geo19052711170019-n1.html
