Still the Best, But For How Much Longer?

It comes as no surprise at all that Saitama Sakae are still the best high school sumo club in Japan, but the gap to second place has been halved compared to the year before. However, their form has not regressed, which this result seems to suggest, it's actually been quite the opposite. They won 3 tournaments in 2018, compared to "only" 2 tournaments in 2017. They've even been able to win back the Inter-High title which was previously held by Kanazawa Gakuin. But now that Saito, Haruyama and Kamiyama have are graduated, will their next batch of talents be able to keep them at the top? It will be tough.

Homeland of Detective Conan

When Hirano Shurato revealed that his favourite anime was Detective Conan, I showed him photos of when I visited a small town called Hokuei in Tottori Prefecture, aka "Conan Town". It is the birthplace of author Aoyama Gosho, and as such, the town is filled with Conan-themed stuff. From Conan-decorated rail station to Conan-decorated manhole covers to the various Conan statues on "Conan Bridge" and even a "Conan Museum".

Tottori will always be associated with Conan, and in very much the same detective spirit, their very own sumo powerhouse, Tottori Johoku, have been able to find and recruit many promising youngsters to their club. They clame close to winning the Inter-High with a team that only has ONE third year student (Toma "Future Monster Tsuguto"). That bodes extremely well for them for 2019, and let's not forget, Ochiai Tetsuya from the Middle School Banzuke has now joined their ranks. I'm going to say this now - this time next year, it will be Tottori Johoku High School who are the best high school sumo club in Japan.

Here's a famous tune from the Detective Conan anime series to get you in the Tottori spirit:

imply the Best, Better Than All the Rest

Katooshu has been saying throughout the past year that Saito Daisuke has impressed him the most out of any high school wrestler. He is strong, quick, incredibly skillful, and most importantly, has shown the best sumo. Out of the five high school tournaments, Saito Daisuke has reached at least the semi-finals in EVERY SINGLE ONE, such has been his consistency. Although he has only won 2 of those tournament, they just happen to be the most illustrious - the Inter-High and the Kokutai. It's been a near-perfect year for Saito Daisuke, and we wish him all the best for the future.

It's My Turn Now

Back in 2017's High School Banzuke, Saito Daisuke was already as high as East Sekiwake. In fact, he was the ONLY wrestler in the sanyaku spots who wasn't a final year high school student, so it comes as no surprise that he would be East Yokozuna in 2018. But is there anyone on this banzuke who is in a similar situation? You bet there is, and his name, is Hanada Hidetora. A fast and powerful wrestler, Hidetora has already established himself on the high school sumo scene, despite only being in his second year.

In the following documentary, he said that the rikishi he wants to become is Chiyonofuji, and that his current goal is to become the best high school wrestler in Japan. Well, 2019 may well be his year.

I don't include feature films in this list, else Miyazaki Hayao's works would appear at several spots in the top, neither Tezuka anime - I like them, but they were all old before I watched them first and I haven't watched a whole series of them. I stop with my banzuke at the present related one
