Haru Basho 2019 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Recommended Posts

I saw Hakuho more worried for the injury than happy for the victory itself.

Anyway, he is old and fading, but he is so smart and mentally flexible. Every bout a different strategy. If plan A fails, there is always a plan B, C and, in case, also a plan D.
Still a step ahead all. Incredible.

I hope to see fully recovered Tochinoshin and Ikioi. It is sad to watch them in these conditions.

Finally, congratulation to the new Ozeki Takakeisho! It was just a matter of time... (And this topic will be 4/5 pages shorter in May... :-) ).

A thrilling end to an entertaining and fun basho. For a shin Komosubi Hoktofuji didn't do too bad and will be back, Endo too.

I like how Hakuhō literally won every match on the belt since I posted I missed his belt skills.

Fantastic basho for a lot of guys I like, Hakuhō, Aoiyama, Kotoshōgiku, Ichinojō, even Gōeidō A showed up.

I really hope Hakuhō’s injury is nothing serious even though it looks pretty bad, I get the feeling we won’t see him in 2 months. Hopefully it’s recoverable even if it takes time.

Kakuryu gave him a run for his money. Not the end of the basho I wanted, but an entertaining match all the same. As far as Hakuho's arm, if it only hurt "a little" he wouldn't even have mentioned it. Professional fighters, especially older ones, are always plagued with various minor injuries, and a high pain tolerance is pretty much a requirement. No idea about the severity of the injury and if it has career-changing implications, but it sure as hell hurts more than he was trying to act like.

Takakeisho was weeping, y'all see that? So stoic on the outside, but he must've been suppressing anxieties all this time. A tenth win and the dam burst open. Congratulations to him. I expect they'll promote him now. Someone give that man a hug and a cookie.

Let's hope Mitakeumi takes this as an opportunity to regroup, to reconsider his sumo before making another attempt to join the big time. He's got the skills and the toukon, but there's more work to be done before he's ready.

It makes sense Ichinojo would take up archery, as it's one of the "three manly sports" of Mongolian culture, wrestling, horse-riding and archery. Ichinojo: "I have a bad back." Ichinojo's horse: "You think YOU have a bad back..." Anyway, he's young and has room to grow (in ability, he's probably good on weight). Whatever he's doing, he needs to keep doing it. And congratulations on the jun-yusho.

Well, it's been fun, folks. Peace.

Shukun-sho: Ichinojo

Kanto-sho: Aoiyama (conditional); Kotoshogiku (conditional); Tomokaze (conditional)

Gino-sho: Takakeisho (conditional)

I was surprised Takakeisho was given the Gino-sho.

While I have nothing against his style of sumo and he certainly deserves his promotion to Ozeki, he doesn't deserve the Gino-sho.

Tochinoshin could definitely benefit from not seeing him in 2 months.

Don't worry. In all probability, Takakeisho will never win another Gino-sho! Or Kanto-sho! Or Shukun-sho! Ozeki!

Is Takakeisho the next Yokozuna?

Tochinoshin is going to spend the next two months going for a lot of degeiko and “accidentally” injuring the other sanyaku guys.

Maybe it's because I love Ikioi so much, but seeing Terutsuyoshi go straight after the injured leg like he did really soured me on him. I get that he's looking for a win to stay in makuuchi but intentionally exploiting an opponent's injury like that just isn't right.

Ikioi is a walking injury. Shouldn't have been there in the first place.

I agree, but all the more reason why Terutsuyoshi could have won without going after the leg. I just hope Ikioi rests up and comes back healthy, it's been difficult to watch him this basho.

That's not how it works. This is not throwing cotton balls at each other, this is sumo, and sumo is brutal. Don't get me wrong, i like Ikioi and it's hard to watch him like this. Sometimes a man has to know when to call it quits. You can't blame his opponents for exploiting his stupidity.

I wish he'd stayed out too, but I get where he was coming from. Either sit out and definitely get demoted to juryo, or compete and hopefully get enough wins to stay up. I would have liked to see Tochinoshin and Mitakeumi get back to 100% as well, but it wasn't going to happen.

To add insult to injury, i'm pretty sure it wasn't because he feared demotion, it was because he never sat out a sinlge day in his career. 941 consecutive bouts.

Stupid ancient warrior behaviour, but that's sumo. And we love sumo.

Hakuho gets whistful about Osaka and Takakeisho talks about the impending ozeki promotion and the usual 'chisai rikishi' problems of his on the latest Sunday sports interview

(I'd offer a better half-hearted translation than that, but I've got a wisdom tooth coming through and it's killing me,.. here's hoping it makes my posts more erudite.)

I can feel your pain, I went through the same thing last week. So far the report on me is all tooth and no wisdom.

Will surely be an unpopular opinion, but Hakuho was selling the “injury” too hard for me to believe it’s real. Just hamming it up in light of the reprimand he got after Hatsu.

I had a similar feeling; I don't think he was completely faking it, just adding a bit of drama, which is all cool as long as he is the big boss and keeps delivering as such. Maybe the pro-wrestling fan in me is too willing to believe that some things are worked, but it did look like that type of deal.

I'm disappointed that Tochinoshin will be demoted after such a short span.  He has been unlucky with various injuries but alas, that is the way of the sumo beast.  He made a few tactical mistakes today and overall didn't seem physically strong enough either.  However, I can't feel excited about Takakeisho's promotion.  His sumo is sinfully dull.  But as long as his opponents keep falling for his same old routine and he stacks up the numbers, I can't argue with the mathematics of it.

Was mulling over the KK/MK trends in this tournament.  There were 7 (missed Takarafuji) 8 Top Division wrestlers with 7-7 records on Day 15.  Four of them secured kachikoshi, and four had makekoshis handed to them.  (How would the authors of Fr**konomics interpret that?)

I was surprised that Abi came back from a 2-7 record and got his kachikoshi with 6 straight wins.  Moreover, he went through the likes of Shohozan, Daieisho, and Kagayaki to do so.  That was a gritty comeback even if not all his opponents were in top fighting form.

Much was made about the possibility of Enho being promoted up into the Makuuchi Division, and then Hakuho would be able to have an all-Miyagino Beya dohyoiri.  But Ishiura ended the tournament with a 6-9 record and is likely to drop down to the Juryo Division.  Would that disappoint Hakuho?  Perhaps.  But then if his injury is serious (hopefully not), he may well sit out the Summer Tournament anyway.

In defence of we the peanut gallery, I don't think the silence around the post in question is a tacit endorsement. Maybe people prefer to avoid dumb posts instead of "making a scene" and e-fighting.

On other forums I frequent I use bad words and insult people who say stupid things all the time, but I feel that the sumo forum is a nice place and I don't want to piss on the rug.

I didn't use even one bad word, although a few came to mind. It's a forum, it's a place for discussion. I, for one, can't let stuff like this slide. Having said that, I'm done here, since there's nothing of significance I can add. Fire and brimstone.

Kinta's YouTube videos make him the closest thing to a father I've ever had and his instructions are clear.

Next time I see nonsense on the forum it's
