Sumo and the Olympics

Why would anyone rely on old news reports that were about an August 2020 staging? The date came and went (for obvious reasons), no rescheduling was ever announced, so the only reasonable conclusion for a long time has been that it's not happening.

Some people are just assuming it's been transplanted forward a year since there's been no outright denial of it happening (in English at least, maybe one exists in Japanese somewhere) and that they'll just televise it now instead... hope springs eternal.

Since this was part of the design on the card backs, the company had to pulp their stock and re-issue the cards with a different back, which in turn meant that anyone playing the game had to either not buy any new expansions or junk their old cards and buy everything over again to avoid having different backs on different cards.

I thought they just had a massive give-away of opaque sleeves.  Most people playing CCGs would be playing old cards in sleeves regardless - you would just need to make sure they were opaque (I know my favorites, while colored, still allowed you to see the back of the cards somewhat, which meant in Innistrad I had to use checklist cards).

Hmmm. Not sure. I was going by what an owner of a game shop told me; I wasn't a player myself.

Seeing olympic boxing match. The camera view is a bit different. On sumo, the main camera shoots from shomen side. On this boxing event, when winner is announced, the camera shoots from mukou-jomen side, hence we can see the royal box.

After Beijing 08 all openings are pointless.

I agree with this, after that ceremony all other ceremonies just seem to be competing on a different division, Beijing was something to behold.

I believe Tokyo 2020 could have rivaled it if it had happened in 2020 without COVID but they were forced to make it somber and mainly about covid and recovery and all that stuff.

More like, everyone realised no one was outdoing the Chinese for pageantry (maybe only the North Koreans, and as if they're going to be hosting an Olympics), so rather than blow a huge ton of money on showing off pomp and circumstance, go for more vibrance instead. It definitely worked very well for Rio and London in terms of the budget, but I don't think Tokyo is fairly comparable thanks to recent happenings.

I think the sumo association gave up too easily. ANY even can be a sumo event with the correct mind set. So get out there, gambarize a little, and yorikiri some badminton folks.

I personally felt that there was a Nuremberg feel to some of the Beijing opening which I found unpleasant.

Also, of course, they faked some of it on the broadcast with CGI which is a bit crap.

Cool! I was wondering if the images I've seen of colorful banners were from the Kokugikan. Thanks for the image!

I know there are many other Japanophiles on the forum. I'm guessing some of the rest of you are feeling as nostalgic as I while watching the Olympic coverage? The images of Tokyo from helicopters are bad enough (before and after commercials breaks), but when they take the cameras down into the empty streets of some of my favorite neighborhoods, it brings a tightness to my throat and chest.

Unique, he says. Clearly not been following the sumo for the past 18 months.

The only sport I was going to watch at the Olympics was karate, and only kata, because kumite is using boxing gloves now and has lost the feeling of being my sport, the only one I practiced, over 30 years ago and now again, as part of my own "sport", kuukido.

But with boxing in the kokugikan also getting across some of the sumo atmosphere, I think I'll watch some boxing as well, and for comparison a bit of kumite in the boring surroundings they've chosen.

Why the hell didn't they have karate in the kokugikan? (Beaten...)

Edit: The bug should be fixed, that which leads to multiple posts when you post from an earlier page and Send seems to result to nothing - you think you didn't send it yet or it didn't work and you click on Send again

Fence 10 of the showjumping course is sumo-themed, with a rikishi statue on one wing, a drum tower on the other, and a dohyo of sorts below the poles.

At the risk of sounding snarky, fantastic but there's no audience to attract!

I assume because karate, like judo (which would be even more apt) and taekwondo, requires several mats side by side so multiple bouts can be fought simultaneously. Kokugikan has room for only one.

That’s cool, but I expect better accuracy! That appears to be a Yokozuna in the midst of a Shiranui-style dohyo-iri, but that’s clearly not a Yokozuna tsuna he’s wearing and he’s missing the kesho-mawashi.

Also, couldn’t they make it look like Hakuho so he got to take part in the Olympics in some way?

Interesting. The horses never had to face the rikishi. They only saw his rear. Probably because the horses are typically shown from the front when jumping, not the back

Considering what happened with the daruma-themed gate (higher than usual failure rate), probably for the best...

The daruma gate was inviting bad karma from the beginning. It had both eyes drawn in.

I think originally there was to be a sumo tournament of some sort between the Olympics and Paraloympics. Since I've not heard anything about this in a long while, I'm guessing that was scrubbed?

Most probably, yeah. I think you were referring to that big Towards Tokyo 2020 event they had a while back where Kakuryu was promising to show guests Japanese hospitality in English?

Since it was meant to capitalise on the influx of tourists for the Olympics who wouldn't normally be there for a basho, and there's no tourists now, doesn't seem much point in holding it.
