Then there’s Japanese films. What Westerner hasn’t heard of Battle Royale, The Ring, Audition, etc? Japanese horror has made its mark on world cinema.

Not being into horror movies I have only heard of the Ring. I have however seen Thermae Times II which has Albino and Kotoshu and more.

Battle Royale is the one like the Hunger Games where a bunch of school kids on an island have to kill each other and survive a game. It crossed over into the mainstream when it was released in 2000 and has had a major cultural influence.

Remember how cool it was when the France TV pre-Olympics commercial featured the animated Sumo wrestler?  That was the high-water mark of Sumo at the Tokyo Olympics.

Ran across another French mention of this commercial for the Olympics. Doesn't add too much info in the paragraph but does credit the illustrations to Stéphane Levallois and directed by Geoffroy Barbet-Massin (Mikros MPC).

Also, there's a slightly longer clip of the full commercial, with an intro in a tatami mat room and surfing the big wave...

I LOVE this French Olympics commercial!  However, when I tried to "save" it to a Playlist on my Youtube channel, I wasn't able to.  I got this message instead ----------- !!

Watching "made for kids" content

To comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and other laws, certain features may be restricted or turned off on content that’s set as made for kids.

I'm from Detroit and followed baseball back then in my youth.  I do not recall it ever being mentioned that Cecil Fielder used to play for a Japanese team.  If it was, it wasn't mentioned very much, to the point that I have no memory of it.

I think Fred McGriff was in the way at Toronto where he was playing before the Hanshin Tigers (prophetic, right?) picked him up.  He was a monster that next season, and MLB took notice.

Any chance for sumo in Paralympics?

I only know of one sumo wrestler who would qualify because of what some people might call a "disability", and that is Yoshiki Fuse.  However, he is now 47 so is a little past his prime.  He used to be active in the 90s in amateur sumo.  He lost part of one arm in a farm equipment accident when he was in the second grade.  He now teaches sumo to high school students.  Terunofuji credits him with inspiring him to keep going when he felt like giving up.  Here is an interesting article about him.  https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/14362038

I remember it being a big thing and I checked the papers:

They'd show clips of him there during games.

Well, I was only 8 years old.  I don't remember much from then regardless, other than Fielder being a big name and me liking to read over all the baseball stats in the newspaper.  The only memory I have specifically related to Fielder was being on vacation in Washington DC I think around then and hearing someone else talk about him.  Why that stuck with me, I don't know.  Memory is a strange thing.

As an aside the English translation of the original novel is great, and makes more sense than the film.

Makes much more compelling reading than Hunger Games, for sure.
