Sumo and the Olympics

Recommended Posts

Today Tokyo governor Koike was at the kokugikan for talks with the NSK top. She thanked the NSK for their cooperation by having the kokugikan used for the boxing event at the Olympics. And she wants to have sumo presented to the foreign guests: the NSK for this will display especially kesho mawashi and nishiki-e that show sumo in the Edo period in the sumo museum within the kokugikan. http://www.nikkansports.com/general/nikkan/news/201901210000864.html

Nishikigi is happy that he will be running in his home prefecture Iwate - about 200m - he's from Morioka, so it will be there

Shodai will be running in Kumamoto, the relay passes through his hometown Uto http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASMDK5220MDKTLVB00F.html

One of the Olympic PR runners for Akita will be ex-Takekaze https://www.sponichi.co.jp/society/news/2020/01/28/kiji/20200127s00042000518000c.html

An obvious choice, he is PR ambassador for the region - and I think he was quite good at running, though way behind Yoshikaze's athletic abilities (those with severe knee problems maybe asked to not be asked to do the honors)

Following the news of the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics, yesterday's NSK board of directors meeting addressed the issue of the Kokugikan's intended use as the boxing venue for the event. The directors affirmed that priority would be given to the holding of honbasho and so the arena will be unavailable to the Olympic organizing committee in case the Olympics are rescheduled to a January, May or September date.

Spoiler

The Tokyo Olympic Games will start on 23 July, 2021 and will run to 8 August after it was postponed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The executive board met on Monday to make a decision after the 2020 Games were moved from this summer.

The Olympics will still be called Tokyo 2020 despite taking place in 2021.

The Paralympic Games, originally due to start on 25 August, 2020, will now take place between 24 August and 5 September, 2021.

And now to see if the NSK moves the honbasho out of the way, as they had done with Nagoya 2020. The 2021 edition is currently scheduled to end on the 25th.

It is still during Nagoya basho so no issue for the arena, unless if minor events are already planned there, but I guess they can be postponned, the new date is known long enough in advance.

Even if the official dates for Nagoya 2021 honbasho are already fixed, it is probably in the best interest of everyone to held it one week in advance.

Unless the famed Japanese numerologists deem it to be an inauspicious occasion. (Scratchingchin...)

I'll brace myself for numerous complaints from American casual fans if that basho starts on July 4th.

Meh.  Casual fans will be ... casual.  What I expect is that rabid fans will complain: how can I go to the beach today when I had to stay up all last night watching sumo?

The Olympic torch relay within Japan starts on March 25th in Fukushima, for April 19th and 20th it is in Kochi pref. and recommended as the last of the 9 pref. appointed celebrity runners is Izutsu (Toyonoshima, the first to enter too short but with special athletic abilities) http://www3.nhk.or.jp/lnews/kochi/20210225/8010010724.html

we will see if those appointed last year are still on the lists (Hakuho, Nishikigi, Takekaze)

Edit: Oshiogawa and Hakuho are on the old list, Nishikigi not https://www.olympicchannel.com/ja/stories/features/detail/五輪聖火リレ-に参加する芸能人-著名人ランナ-を紹介-あの人はとこを走る/

It had been planned that Shodai runs with the torch in Kumamoto home in Uto-city, but he had to decline the honor for Corona reasons. The run would have been on May 5th, 4 days before the Natsu basho, and 2 weeks before the basho the NSK restricts the rikishi's trips to the neighborhood. Kumamoto pref. got the notice of denial via the NSK on Feb. 24th, they checked with Shodai himself on the 26th. http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASP333D6YP33TLVB001.html

Hakuho has a tough schedule: the torch relay in Sumida ward is on July 19th, the day after day 15 of the July basho, which is planned to be in Nagoya http://www.sumo.or.jp/Admission/isolate/606/. The 2nd part has the kokugikan as the goal, planned arrival at the kokugikan 16:01h JST, logically Hakuho should be running as the last to be the one there. https://gtimg.tokyo2020.org/image/upload/production/lxwifuxxyoqkvommhxqb.pdf

There are several requirements for the celebrity runners https://tokyo2020.org/ja/torch/about/secure-and-safe - and if Hakuho just arrives from Nagoya, he maybe won't meet the conditions.

What if this year’s July basho is held in Tokyo? Not a problem, is it?
