Kisenosato intai

The NSK had a rijikai yesterday and acknowledged that Kisenosato took on the toshiyori name Araiso. Kyokai rules demand that he stays 1 year as heya attached oyakata before he can become independent and open a heya - and he may do so already for the Olympics. Since nearly 1 year ago he is looking for premises - somewhere between Akihabara and Asakusa station is seen as likely - not many sumo-beya there, but the AKB48 headquarters - it may turn out to be called AKB=Akiba-beya. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20190116-OHT1T50183.html

That was to be expected.

There had been talk back in the days, that he might take over Naruto-beya at some point, but after his former shisho's death and moto-Takanotsuru's falling-out with the widow (switching to Tagonoura as a result), going independent in the future seemed to be the logical step.

Interestingly, there will be a new Araiso stable after the last one closed it's doors roughly 12 years ago.

On a related note: Do we know, if he has some private deshi among the current Tagonoura wrestlers?

I did a double take on that. I thought I’d somehow missed a tragic death involving an elder falling out a window.

We should not quarrel over that. ;-)

That kid looks pretty calm and docile. Has Kise even lost the power to make babies cry?

I remembering him saying in response to relationships .."sumo first" ... So maybe he is ready for a romantic interest ? He's gonna need one if he runs a stable

I don't expect the NTV pages to remain for long - the NSK has posted the complete intai press conference of Kisenosato on their new channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGT4HuW23m4

The Kisenosato bento on sale in the kokugikan, limited to the Hatsu basho, was put on sale again

sales of Kisenosato goods have expanded after intai

My Japanese is limited, but around the 24min mark, Kisenosato seems to thank Asashoryu and Harumafuji.  From what I could make out, he was saying that having the Mongolian Asashoryu as Yokozuna made him want to become a Yokozuna even more (?).  If my limited comprehension is near right, I am a little surprised that he didn't mention Hakuho here.

I've started to check the 1000 or so articles that piled up for me since the intai - one interesting bit: the article from Asahi saying that the NSK had prohibited live broadcast of the intai press conference was already deleted from the net - it's still in the google cache https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:XYpZAJwxlWUJ:https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASM1J5J9ZM1JUTQP014.html

The full coverage was aired a bit delayed on several channels

Kise asked about the foreigners and students, while he started after middle school, had thanked the Mongolian yokozuna, starting with Asashoryu, that they induced in him the strong wish to become stronger, even a little bit. As he failed to make it to yokozuna, Harumafuji gave him some good advice.

I remember Asashoryu used to mess up with him. In one occasion Asa downed Kise with one kick, a kimarite called "ketaguri (?) or foot-kicking.

Kise has the worst record with Asashoryu of 4 wins and 13 losses or a winning rate of only 23.5%. However, he has a winning record with Kakuryu of 32 wins 18 losses or 64%. 24 wins 37 losses with Harumafuji or 39.3%, 16 wins 44 losses with Hakuho or 26.7%.

Due to increased interest in the manga about Kise, it is again for free on the app of MangaHot till the end of this month http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2019/01/18/kiji/20190117s00005000539000c.html

Kisenosato not only has a manga kesho mawashi set, he now also gets a manga about himself, working title: "Kisenosato monogatari." To get published after the basho on the manga-app manga-hot and for 3 months in the monthly Comic-Zenon. http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASK585398K58UTQP01F.html

"The Raou of the sumo world" - so his features are like in the manga Hokuto-no-ken

And the final title of the story is: Yokozuna Raou-legend Kisenosato

Episode 1 is on the app now - no longer a  free to read one. Seems like some fraud - they had promised free access to the Kise manga if you register in advance. At least you got a contingent of 104 lives on the start of the app: one each gets used up for opening any ordinary manga episode once.

The Kise story ep. 1 is quite short - half of it baseball, the rest deciding to enter the heya. If all 3 episodes are like that, it will be not much of a story - but maybe they split it into more episodes than the 3 in the magazine.

Araiso-oyakata not yet in a suit today - he was at the heya yesterday to prepare for the switch to one - for his first proper oyakata work at the NHK charity sumo on Feb. 9th it may be ready.  http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2019/01/20/kiji/20190120s00005000018000c.html

Sadly Kisenosato will remain in records as the worst-performing Yokozuna in the modern era history :( He used to be strong Ozeki. It is sad to see his career ending this way.

He will also be remembered for his fearlessness, his do or die attitude, the way he comported himself, the excitement his bouts generated, and the much needed shot in the arm he injected to the Japanese love of sumo. So there's that.

About the retirement money for Kisenosato

  • the main retirement money - rikish-youroukin: for a yokozuna 15 million yen

the additional pay for continuous service, kinzokukasankin, payed according to sekitori rank for each basho not full kyujo: 7 as yokozuna *500 000 (4 basho kyujo): 3.5 million yen, 31 as ozeki *400 000: 12.4 million yen, 22 as plain sanyaku * 250 000: 5.5 million yen, 20 as maegashira *200 000: 4 million yen, 3 in juryo * 150 000: 450 000 yen

  • kinzokukasankin total: 25.85 million yen

the merit bonus the rijikai will decide upon and which recently won't be published any more - most yokozuna got about 100 million yen: Taka 130, Asashoryu about 120 million - for the yokozuna with the worst record ever, nikkan-gendai calls 20 million as most satisfactory http://www.nikkan-gendai.com/articles/view/sports/245609/3

plus the rest after taxes paid of the deposit from the kensho money the NSK keeps for the rikishi: now 26 700 yen per kensho - Kise had attracted about 30 kensho on average on his bouts as yokozuna (36 wins) http://www.nikkan-gendai.com/articles/view/sports/245609/4

Will the Yokozuna's retirement increase the value of his BBM 2019 trading card? Any other collectors out there?

Kisenosato fought in 66 contested bouts as a Yokozuna and gave up 18 gold stars.  But he was fighting injured/debilitated in 53 of those bouts.

As a side note, in his first tournament as a Yokozuna (healthy for the first 13 bouts), Kisenosato gave up no gold stars, unlike the other three Yokozunas, who all gave up gold stars that tournament (Hakuho 1, Kakuryu 2, Harumafuji 2).  Obviously, his record would have looked a lot different had he not been injured...

Such is sumo...  Were it not for injuries, who's to say Kise would've even made it to Yokozuna?  Yokozunas Baruto and Terunofuji  would still be dominating!
