apraxin 56 Posted January 19, 2019 (edited) It's being reported by NHK too now: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20190119/k10011783581000.html Cites 'pain in the left knee' as the reason, but no diagnosis beyond that. No guarantees but that site had Kakuryu being out first too. Take it for what it is.

Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted January 19, 2019 "He injured a tendon in his (left knee) and has internal bleeding," Dewanoumi said. "Returning to the ring at this tournament is a possibility. He is probably very frustrated, but I want him to treat the injury." https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20190119/p2g/00m/0sp/054000c 3
word20 21 Posted January 19, 2019 (edited) Now he have to go through recovery and rehabilitation and really train hard after the rehabilitation. In this way we will not see the on going disappointments that he is not able to manage the sanyaku division and get promoted to Ozeki. After that he will be able to be promoted to yokozuna. They do not get the rest that they need after a tournament. Rikishi these days do not get rest after tournament when they go travel around the country. I think this is a major cause that we have not seen Mitakeumi been promoted to Ozeki and Yokozuna run Edited January 19, 2019 by word20 added a line

Yubinhaad 11,278 Posted January 22, 2019 Inagawa-oyakata reports that Ura's injury is the same as before, torn anterior cruciate ligament (前十字靭帯断裂).
Bumpkin 438 Posted January 22, 2019 The last time Ura was injured he missed 5 consecutive bashos and fell from M4w to Sd91e. Will we ever see Ura on the dohyo again?
Yubinhaad 11,278 Posted January 23, 2019 (edited) Kyodo says Chiyonokuni is kyujo from Day 11 due to a left knee ligament injury (複合靱帯損傷 - complex? compound? ). But only two weeks required for treatment, so maybe not as disastrous as it seemed. Free win for Abi there. They also report that Takanosho is out again due to his right knee injury, having already missed five days earlier in the basho. Edit: Kyokai just confirmed Chiyonokuni's kyujo, nothing so far for Takanosho. Edited January 23, 2019 by Yubinhaad 2

And my reaction to the two-week diagnosis looked something like this: ?!?!?! In any case, the 16th kyujo already in Chiyonokuni's 76-tournament career. Guy just can't catch a break. Edit: Kyokai just confirmed Chiyonokuni's kyujo, nothing so far for Takanosho. Seems best translation is 'multiple ligament injury'. I guess that ACL and PCL are usually the combo to go and a dislocation can go along with everything. Maybe if it was the lightest sprain of the ligament 2 weeks might be ok? But it sounds really horrible. https://orthoinfo.aaos.org/en/diseases--conditions/combined-knee-ligament-injuries/

I am afraid we won't see Ura back in Makuuchi. Even if he comes back from the injury, he will struggle to make it to juryo.
Asashosakari 18,128 Posted January 23, 2019 (edited) Sanspo says Kotoyuki is out as well, no exact diagnosis reported yet, just "right knee injury". That article also adds that Chiyonokuni will undergo surgery after the basho, according to Kokonoe-oyakata, with him unlikely to be back for Haru. Takanosho has appeared on the Kyokai list, meanwhile. Edit: Kotoyuki now listed as well. Edited January 23, 2019 by Asashosakari
