Asashosakari 18,786 Posted January 22, 2019 4 hours ago, Kintamayama said: It was always 'better back then". It never was. Many sports fans like to yammer on about how much better things were in the past, where "in the past" invariably means the exact period of time when they personally first got interested in the sport in question. Purely coincidental, I'm sure. 1

Bumpkin 438 Posted January 22, 2019 Here's something that makes no sense. M11w Ikioi (5-4) has M15e Chiyonokuni (8-1) on Day 10 and M16w Daishomaru (0-9) on Day 11.
Tsuchinoninjin 1,244 Posted January 22, 2019 Whether it was better then or not, THIS basho in particular, wow. Maybe call it black hatsu? Kisenosato retiring, Takekaze gone too, Aminishiki maybe soon, Takanoiwa technically too to close out *that* whole mess. Then, on top of it all of the ozeki are a total mess, the only other rikishi besides Hakuho that was being convincing ending up with a knee injury. I hope the 2nd week brings out some quality sumo at least.

This basho has been crazier than others but there have been some quality sumo - Takakeisho for one.

Bumpkin 438 Posted January 22, 2019 (edited) Ura lost to Hoshoryu. Ura hurt his knee. Bad. They wheeled Ura out in the wheel chair. Edited January 22, 2019 by Bumpkin
Rocks 1,807 Posted January 22, 2019 I know Arwashi is desperate but he henkaed going right into a kotenge wrenching the crap out of Chiyonoumi's arm. Really dirty.

This effectively ends Ura's return. We won't see him in Makuuchi for a long time, maybe, never again. Takanoiwa started this basho on the wrong foot. Kise's intai, Ozekis collapse, Mita's injury, Takekaze's intai, .... Hak's the same though.

Eikokurai 3,433 Posted January 22, 2019 Oh, crap. Ikioi copy and pasted his win over Yago, but Chiyonokuni has come out of it looking in a pretty bad way. That looks like his tournament will be over. Glad he'd already got his KK sorted and saved himself from demotion.

robnplunder 974 Posted January 22, 2019 It's all my fault. Before the basho, I secretly hoped Takanoiwa to start an Ozeki run. ---> Intai. Then, I wished Kise to do well ---> Intai I fell back to my favorite, Mita ---> Kyujo I wished Ura to KK at the least -> Injured I posted good stuff about Chiyonokuni ---> Injured <snip> ... then finally Kotoyuki whom I often laughed at his falling into the crowd I wish Hak to go zensho yusho. There! He will now go kyujo -> intai for sure. 1
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted January 22, 2019 Some brighter news, Kotokamatani scores his KK at Ms14, and with the way that things will open up in the upper divisions, he will move even closer to sekitorihood for Haru.

Eikokurai 3,433 Posted January 22, 2019 (edited) Tamawashi has quietly been having a good tournament. He's managed to sneak a kachikoshi with hardly anyone noticing and secures his Sekiwake rank for Haru. That will be his 7th tournament at the rank, 12th overall in sanyaku. Takakeisho had Takayasu rocking there for a moment but his old enemy – overcommitment – reared its ugly head. Takayasu stays even and it's 50-50 right now whether he KKs or MKs.
