Hatsu Basho 2019 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Recommended Posts

This question has been bothering me for a while and excuse my ignorance: who is this woman? I see her in the background at almost every match since I first started watching sumo 2 years ago. Is she some kind of eminence grise of the sumo world? Thanks!

I only see her at Tokyo basho, so I guess she is a Tokyo basho supporter somehow.

You can check the 'official' guide here: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sumo.or.jp%2FIrohaKyokaiDonationSponsor%2Fwrap%2F

But I am sure others know what it really takes in the real world.

Yeah I have wondered. I saw her in person and I went out of my way to meet Olympic jiji (gold hat guy). He gave me personalized stickers! I have wondered who she is, I always assumed she was supporting a heya or something.

[How do I link forum posts like every one else seems to do?]

By not using the link button - simply paste the url into the textbox.

I use the link button all the time, works fine.

I suggest that if you just want to put a URL up do what Jakusotsu and Gurowake said. If you want to make text into a clickable link, highlight the text, push the link button, paste the URL into the box and click ok (or whatever it is). You can also put your cursor where you want the text link to appear, click the link button, fill in the URL and the text you want to click on, and click ok (or whatever it is)

Hattorizakura got the 3rd win of his career a short time ago, defeating Houn for the first time, having lost their previous four bouts.

Making fun of the elderly?

How mature of you.

Let me guess...the S. in your username is from "sensitive"?

Im sorry about the lame joke with the  albino-prune...aham hamm...i mean...her Imperial Majesty The Empress of Nippon.

Luckily there is a highly chance that empress Michiko doesn't be a forum member and won't get offended i hope...

Hattorizakura Gambateeeee!!! you can get five until Kyushu!

Sorry, I deleted my comment saying the same thing as Jakusotsu - I thought I was at the end of the thread when I posted my comment but there was another page, and so felt Jakusotsu's was sufficient.

RE: the old lady

Read something about her and her husband if you have any spare time -- even if it's only the Wikipedia article.  It is a remarkable story, and this is a remarkable couple.  I'm not Japanese, and I've never been to Japan.  But one of the reasons Japan is so highly regarded among the nations of the world is because of the way these two people lived their lives.

With all due respect to people who posted about Tenno in this thread, you do realize that this is an international forum where there are members who don't look kindly upon what Japanese Emperor family stood for until the end of WWII.   Millions of people were killed in the name of Tenno.    When Tenno appeared in this thread, I stayed away from posting cynical remark until your post above.   You should read about the other side of what Japanese Emperor line stood for.   Start with The Rape of Nanjing which some Japaneses still deny it happened.

All that (i.e. both posts) seems pretty far afield from the original idea of there being something unseemly about making fun of the looks of an elderly woman (or man); also not that it matters,  but I believe she wasn’t even a teenager when WWII ended (or a member of the Imperial family at that time)...

Not to get into an argument about this, but Yamanishi specifically suggested to read about the current Emperor and Empress. Granted, the Emperor's father was the Showa Emperor who at the advice of MacArthur was not prosecuted for war crimes. Empress Michiko was the first commoner to marry into the imperial family, so her story is to an extent extraordinary to say the least. Not to excuse the atrocities that the Japanese committed during the war, but the Heisei Emperor and Empress have done as much within their power to promote peace and humanitarian efforts. I would have to say it myself that they are indeed a remarkable couple.

Will Mitoryu ever make it to Makuuchi?     I'd thought he'd march right into Makuuchi instead of staying in juryo for 7 consecutive basho (soon to be 8).   Is he done?   No sanyuku potential anymore?

Tokushoryu wins a rematch against Enho, and I'm watching sumo at work again which means I'm winning at life.

Speaking of winners, what's this about Hattorizakura?

Chiyonokuni gets his kachikoshi. Yay!

How does a battered Ikioi beat the unstoppable machine that has been Yago so far this tournament? Sumo makes no sense sometimes.

I was rooting for Kuni & Yago.  Well, 1 out of 2 ain't bad.   Kuni always gives his best.  He got what he deserved after 3 MKs in a row.  Time to creep back up toward joi.

Yago's loss is disappointing.  KK can wait.

Sumo makes no sense to me.   It seems every basho is different from 100 previous ones.  :-)

The wheels seem to have come off for Hokutofuji and Nishikigi. Both started superbly but are now on mini losing streaks (ignoring the two freebies for Hokutofuji).

Haru basho is shaping up to be a real kadoban party.

Takakeisho Ozeki watch:

  • Needs to go 4:2 the rest of the way.   Doable given that he faces Takayasu on day 10.  IMO, Takakeisho will beat weakened Takayasu.
  • May still get the nod with 10 wins.  Unlikely, IMO, but stranger things have happened.

Ozeki Kadoban watch:

  • Tochinoshin - kadoban
  • Takayasu (4-5) - highly likely as he looks fighting injured and it's not getting any better.
  • Goedio (3-6) - he needs a miracle to stave off kadoban

I have no concerns about Takakeisho. Even with 10 wins and no promotion he stays firmly on the Ozeki run for Haru. That said, you never know. 32 wins all in sanyaku, including a convincing yusho, might be enough. As always, context matters. With three struggling Ozeki and a recently retired Kisenosato, the NSK may like to nudge the guard change along a little quicker and create some positive news at the same time.
