His tachi-ai is normally one of the more explosive, but he sort of just fell forward into it.

Yatagarasu 352 Posted January 20, 2019 Is it just me or were there some increasing instances of rikishi (e.g. Goeidou, Shohouzan...) not putting both hands down before tachiai? Didn't even bother to pretend, just barely waved the second hand and went for it.

Perhaps they didn’t want to call matta in front of the emperor.

since_94 650 Posted January 20, 2019 So the royal couple were in attendance and it certainly lent a degree of hype outside the Kokugikan with all the secret service types and the security cordon for the imperial motorcade's arrival. Got to see them pull in, with the Emperor smiling and waving out the window. I didn't have tickets for today. It was a sellout, of course. 2
Akōgyokuseki 227 Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) Ura needs to make his (new?)style of sumo click....and fast, it's already looking ultra competitive in makushita as it is..he can't afford any more losses to play with. Kairyu looked liked the more aggressive of the two, allowing Ura no space to work with. Japan Sumo channel Hoshoryu also took a loss... although I think he simply overextended pushing Ichiyamamoto and slipped. A silly mistake, let's hope he can rebound from this unfortunate loss. Morty 1,480 Posted January 20, 2019 Really quick bouts today, almost all of them over in just a second or two. Takakeisho-Onosho the highlight. I'm starting to think we will have a new Ozeki next basho

Atenzan 1,074 Posted January 20, 2019 My takeaway from today is that Kasugaryuu doesn't hold a candle in comparison with the previous yumito-rikishi Satonofuji.

It didn't work on Kairyu has he kept up the attack, never giving Ura a look.
Philioyamfugi 378 Posted January 20, 2019 Might as well just admire the Hak..no slapping, he's pushing and thrusting willing to take on everybody's game and deadly on the belt. Haven't seen him waging grips off opponents either. He seems to just be daring them to beat him... GOAT looking forward to the eventual Takakeishou bout with Hak. Earlier I would have thought Takakeishou had a chance.

Haven't seen him waging grips off opponents either. In the final bout today, Aoiyama got his right hand inside Hakuho's left arm, and got a left outside grip on Hakuho's mawashi. Hakuho instantly knew what to do. He spun away from the loose hand, and used Aoiyama's mawashi-gripping hand/arm as leverage to effect a throw with his own right arm. Beautiful technique. Amazing sumo sense. The "wagging grips off" seems to occur more in the middle of the ring against opponents that Hakuho fears can throw him. I don't think Aoiyama was that kind of threat in Hakuho's mind. When Hakuho is firing on all cylinders, it is a real joy to see him at work. That joy is compounded when he faces a close rival (e.g., Asashoryu, Harumafuji, and even pre-injury Kisenosato). The concern I had from today's bout was that Hakuho had to use his right arm to throw Aoiyama, the arm that has two supporters over his elbow. Hope he doesn't strain that "weapon"... Yeah he is a joy to watch. I don't usually go for Aoiyama but I wanted him to win today to keep it interesting. But the instant they went to the belt I knew he was cactus. Hak is just so far ahead of most other rikishi the enjoyment is in watching how he out thinks and out manoeuvres them (and his astonishing footwork). To throw a man as big and heavy as Aoiyama as easily as he did today is just amazing to watch.
Dwale 419 Posted January 20, 2019 Now that Hakuho has settled into his sumo, and with the upper ranks being as depleted as they are, I don't see how anyone can stop him from taking the cup. I mean, anything can happen (he might suffer an injury, for instance) but the odds are not high.

Just like a legendary Chinese martial art master once said: "if my opponent does not attack I do not attack. But when he attacks, I attack before he starts attacking".

Yeah, I wasn’t being completely serious. Just watched the highlights back and noticed that too. I think the first bout after the Emperor arrived was a matta actually. Highway 46 Posted January 20, 2019 Gah! Aoiyama started off well, but as always has no answer for the underarm throw, which IMO is one of Hakuho's best weapons. I think Hak could even get a zensho this basho, he looks very, very good.

Yamanashi 3,745 Posted January 20, 2019 RE: the old lady Read something about her and her husband if you have any spare time -- even if it's only the Wikipedia article. It is a remarkable story, and this is a remarkable couple. I'm not Japanese, and I've never been to Japan. But one of the reasons Japan is so highly regarded among the nations of the world is because of the way these two people lived their lives.
