Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted January 19, 2019 Meanwhile, down in Juryo, Terutsuyoshi is two wins away from katchikoshi and a Makuuchi debut next basho.
Dwale 419 Posted January 19, 2019 Ikioi's mention of fighting with one eye made me wonder: has there every been a one-eyed rikishi? Would they even allow that nowadays?
Benevolance 2,478 Posted January 19, 2019 They let some rikishi fight despite them only having a single decent move, so they ought to let a rikishi fight with only a single decent eye. It's only fair.

I don't know if there has ever been one but I don't see why they would ever stop one from trying. Nishikigi and Robocop are functionally blind on the doyho and they did fine.

Now, remove Mitakeumi, Tochinoshin, Kakuryu, and Kisenosato from the picture, and you can see how watching this tournament pales in comparison to watching all those guys compete on the same day. If Ikioi is really hurt as someone mentioned, I'll be gutted. Ikioi is my son’s favorite (he will even pause from playing with his Ultramen when Ikioi is on the TV; even Hakuho is usually only graced with partial attention), thus the concern in our home is great. I like him because he always comports himself as a gentleman in the ring and comes across as a genuinely nice bloke outside of it. Let's all hope he's OK
CT3* 331 Posted January 20, 2019 For some reason, watching Shohozan slap Hakuho across the face in their bout had me literally laughing out loud. Shohozan was quickly punished, but he showed some balls with that harite!

Shohozan's slap was so tentative, like he had to overcome his natural "who the hell am I to slap the GOAT?" inclination to even try it. I laughed too because it truly was laughable.

Backstage he iced it for a while, moaned and groaned, and said to his tsukebito that he thinks he "broke the inside of his eye." "I can see, but when I got hit, I stopped breathing. The whole of the inside of my eye hurts. My head hurts. I may have a concussion." he lamented. Ikioi has never missed a day of sumo since joining in March 2005, 918 consecutive bouts. "It's the first time that I injured this part of my body so I'm off to the hospital. I'll be on the dohyo tomorrow, even if they remove my eyeball!" he summed. Shouldn’t be a problem. Ikioi has three ‘i’s. He can afford to lose one. Edited January 20, 2019 by Eikokurai 4

Sounds like a detached retina (which is bad). I hope he gets the proper treatment he needs rather than coming back just for the sake of gambarising

It was an half hearted attempt.

Akōgyokuseki 227 Posted January 20, 2019 Really hope Ikioi will be okay, there's not a basho that goes by where he's not limping off the dohyo...and that's what makes me love him more it just wouldn't be a basho without him... https://youtu.be/twpei0ZMrxo (That video makes me miss Ama-chan even more too)

Akinomaki 39,802 Posted January 20, 2019 Hall announcement: The Tenno will watch the 2nd half - and is to be greeted with applause
Akinomaki 39,802 Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) Ex-Kirishima is guest at Abema - he never lost at tenran-zumo (Tenno watching), 14-0. He said the Showa Tenno (a big sumo fan) watched from the dohyo-iri - and all the special gozen-gakari special dohyo-iri I remember were for the crown prince: maybe the (Heisei) Tenno always arrived for the 2nd half (even too late for the same style makuuchi dohyo-iri at the Nagano Olympics) Edited January 20, 2019 by Akinomaki

It make take a while before Ura can return to Makuuchi. Yago keeps trucking. Meanwhile, Aminishiki and Takakaze keep losing. We may see more Intai after the basho? dingo 1,160 Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) Temporarily, a black eyepatch would look great on Ikioi, now he just needs to work on rolling his R's. And convince the kyokai to let him carry a parrot on his shoulder during his bouts (maybe a crow would work as well ;) ) Edited January 20, 2019 by dingo
robnplunder 974 Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) Going out on a limb ... I say two (maybe even three) Ozeki are going kadoban after this basho. No hope for Goeido after today's loss. A new Ozeki in waiting, Takakeisho wins another today. Edited January 20, 2019 by robnplunder
