He didn't seem to be in pain at all until he hit the ground stepping off the dohyo. Although of course as everyone knows, no one gets injured falling from the dohyo () it looked like one of those shivers one gets when hitting a joint inline. If so, he'll be OK in a few days. If not, bad news coming.
Treblemaker 254 Posted January 19, 2019 Rewatching the videos, and noticed something I had never seen before: Just as Hakuho is getting ready for his match, on his first visit to his corner, he has the yobidashi spill a small amount of water in the corner near the salt bucket, and then he dipped his toes (both feet) in it. Didn't do it again in subsequent trips. Have never noticed anyone else doing this. Is it for better traction, or superstition, or what? Anyone else noticed this? 2

WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted January 19, 2019 Barring a miracle comeback, Mitakeumi's run of 12 consecutive basho in the sanyaku will come to an end.

Kintamayama 44,354 Posted January 19, 2019 The commentator on the Japanese side said yesterday that Mitakeumi injured his leg during the bout and that was why he didn't offer any resistance at the edge. And yes, very few injuries occur outside the dohyo. in any case it's a week to heal so all the alc or whatever hysteria was not necessary. They are even talking of a mid basho return possibility. 1

Jabbamaru 166 Posted January 19, 2019 Im starting to think...That Yago kid is more then just a beautiful face...Cool as an veteran. Finally Asanoyama shows some power. Good. Oh boy...And Ichi turns the switch to the snail mode on...In the other hand Yokozuna Hakuho is in cruise mode. Again. Came on, man, just loses one...Just for fun...

I pegged Yago as a potential Makuuchi regular. If he continues to progress, he may be a sanyuku in a few basho. The suspense is over for this basho. Give it to Hak and be done with it. The only things left to see for my personal interest are Can Takakeisho win 11 to become an Ozeki Goeido, Takayasu MK watch Can't think of any other reason to watch this basho

Akōgyokuseki 227 Posted January 19, 2019 Aminishiki looks completely spent, like he's just going through the motions. He didn't really put up much of an effort at all against Toyonoshima earlier. Is there any news on Tochinoshin yet? He seemed as weak as a kitten this basho, worried for both him and his rank ...

Yago is well on his way to double-digits which usually gets rewarded with a sansho in a division debut, while Nishikigi started well and if he KKs it will be his second in the joi. He could even break into the yaku ranks if he does well enough. Those are the stories I’ve got my eye on.

Tragic. You may be right, since Mitakeumi was unable to even limp back up onto the ring and required a wheelchair to leave - all the markings of a more serious injury. But I think he will be motivated to return since he probably doesn't want to miss the opportunity to finish a possible KK (he's just 3 wins off) and maintain his sanyaku status on the banzuke. We'll see. Hope it doesn't turn out to worsen any injury (like Kisenosato in his first and only Yokozuna championship), if he does decide to tough it out. This is my main concern. He's still young and should take his sweet time to heal a serious injury instead of risking a bigger one. He can always get back to a sanyuku rank when he is healthy. Many athletes ruined their career trying to return to action prematurely. Takakeisho bullying his way to beat Ichinojo ... that's just wrong. When I watched this latest bout, I couldn't help but feel that I was watching a very self-confident mouse giving it to a timid elephant. Everyone is wondering: what the [insert favourite expletive here] has happened to days 1-5 Ichinojo?!!!!!! Edited January 19, 2019 by Amamaniac
since_94 650 Posted January 19, 2019 The crowd energy in the Kokugikan was noticeably lacking today. The basho seems deflated somehow, for want of a better word, like a balloon after the air has been let out of it, with so many crowd favorites and heavy hitters out. Kisenosato's retirement has really cast a pall over the whole thing. Enho's juryo bout was really something to see, though. The guy really brings it.
