No need to see day 6 matches, or day 7, ..... Just get Mita & Hak to decide the yusho and be done with it. Will save us a lot of boredom. Who's with me? Boycott, boycott, boycott, boycott .... Joaoiyama 306 Posted January 18, 2019 2 hours ago, Amamaniac said: Anyone think he can make it all the way up to Makuuchi this year despite his lack of body mass? Not really, he is already at 1.85m, 115 kilos and is only 19 years old. He will be bigger than Asashoryu but can he handle bigger guys like his uncle did ? Asashoryu made Makuuchi in 2 years, if Hoshoryu continues these good performances he'll make it in less.
robnplunder 974 Posted January 18, 2019 How many intai among Aminishiki, Takekaze, Toyohibiki after this basho? They are struggling mightily in Juryo & Makushita divisions. My bet is all 3.
robnplunder 974 Posted January 18, 2019 I knew Ura'd beat Kithaharima whose career seems to be winding down. Awesome sumo by Sadanoumi beating the unbeaten Kaisei. That was totally unexpected.
Eikokurai 3,433 Posted January 18, 2019 (edited) Uh oh. Mita looks crocked. Takakeisho didn't have a clue what to do once that became a yotsu battle. He looked like a little kid trying to wrestle a toy out Tochiozan's arms. Edited January 18, 2019 by Eikokurai

robnplunder 974 Posted January 18, 2019 (edited) Takakeisho vs Tochiosan clearly showed how one dimensional Takakeisho is. He looked clueless once Showhosan got a hold of his mawashi. Edited January 18, 2019 by robnplunder

word20 21 Posted January 18, 2019 Mitakeumi will not be promoted to Ozeki in this way, because every tournament it has been the same way and he has not be injured like today. It does not seem that Mitakeumi has what it takes to get promoted to Ozeki. Before Takakeisho will get further he needs to learn and use the mawashi

Mita may have been lost for the rest of the basho. Takakeisho lost but I still think he has a good chance at 11 wins.
Akōgyokuseki 227 Posted January 18, 2019 Ura's bout... Japan Sumo channel Our little man does it...just! Makushita is starting to warm up as we head into the weekend. Possible tasty match ups tomorrow include Terao v Naya, Tanabe v Shonannoumi (nice shikona to try and say drunk) Dewahayate v Tsushimanada (another great shikona to say drunk) and Fujiazuma v Wakamotoharu... looking forward to those (if I'm awake then ) (Thank heavens the crane has gone kyujo)
Karasukurai 165 Posted January 18, 2019 Kaisei, Ichinojo and Mitakeumi - nooo! Hope Mita recovers quickly but it didn't look good. This basho started chaotically exciting but already may be heading for another Hak win, albeit by some fortunate matches. Personally I'd like to see the chaos continue for a bit longer! After a bit of a struggle to get to juryo in his early career and making it there again later on, I think at 32 it's going to be tough ask for him to make it back to sekitori. Shame, I like it when little guys win... (Does Ura look as if he's a bit bulkier?) Edited January 18, 2019 by Akōgyokuseki
Amamaniac 2,078 Posted January 18, 2019 (edited) Just when things looked like we were seeing a mass uprising by the generation of future stars, most of the hopefuls suffered twists of fate in dramatic fashion! Onosho is about the only one who has remained unscathed. But as almost everyone starts to struggle, Hakuho finds himself in the driver's seat yet again. Morita's commentary today pointed out that there have been first-time yusho winners in January for the last three years. Will we see that trend continue? At this stage (and it is still early), both Onosho and Aoiyama seem to be positioned to fulfil the need. Will the reportedly leaner, lighter Hakuho be able to persevere till day 15? Certainly the competition has largely evaporated, but he seems to have lost some of his earlier power. I'd love to see Hakuho take on Aoiyama (hopefully the Bulgarian didn't injure his wrist in his bout against Daieisho today) before the end of this tournament. But what other surprise twists are in store? Edited January 18, 2019 by Amamaniac

My bet is all 3. Aminishiki: Hard to tell. Probably when demotion to Makushita is inevitable, maybe after a disastrous basho (3-12 or worse) as well. Takekaze: Demotion to Makushita (most likely after this basho, I don't see him getting 5 more wins). Toyohibiki: It is not public knowledge, whether he has a kabu secured or not (owned or loaned). As long as he hasn't secured his future, he will continue (my guess). So, I oppose your bet of 3.
Kotogouryuu 126 Posted January 18, 2019 Well, this day sure deflated the basho a bit. Awful to see Mitakeumi limp out like that.
Philioyamfugi 378 Posted January 18, 2019 Ditto to deflated...a back to reality day with ichinojo missing his cortisone shot, Takakeishou giving up his belt and the boss on cruise control with Kakaryou and Mitakiumi possibly out.. Bright spots are Ishura up from Juryo, Aoiyama looking strong and determined.
Jakusotsu 5,806 Posted January 18, 2019 I wonder if Mitakeumi's leg gave way during the bout or if it was an unfortunate landing. Hard to tell.
Amamaniac 2,078 Posted January 18, 2019 2 hours ago, Akōgyokuseki said: (Does Ura look as if he's a bit bulkier?) I second that observation! Is the extra weight designed to bring about a change in his wrestling style so as to prevent future injuries resulting from non-sumo techniques? Whatever the reason, in the the bout you tagged, his tachiai still showed signs of his old Greco-Roman ways.
