A new recruit from Hokkaido for the hero of Hokkaido - Hakkaku is apparently still in Hokkaido and on the 11th was at the school of his new deshi.

- if Kaisho is the reading of his first name, this connection is too good to be random: Kaisho 海翔 is the name of a company in Fukui city 福 -

moved to Date-city and joined the new Muroran sumo youth club in 6th grade:

I agree Kaito or Hiroto are the most likely readings, though Amato, Umito, and Kaisho are possibilities.

Hakkaku scouted also Hokkaido Ono Agriculture High School high school (Hokuto city) 3rd year Masaki Akiyama 秋山将輝 (18, 178cm, 170kg) .

Influenced by his father, he started sumo in primary school. He won the yusho at the Hokkaido inter-high last year, but injured his knee last year in December and had to concentrate on treatment after that.

His mother revealed that costs for food are over 200 000yen a month (Takakeisho's family had a peak of 300 000, the whole Musashigawa-beya just 400 000). The reporters tried to provoke the standard response and hinted at the many yokozuna from Hokkaido (the last active right next to him), but he repeated sekitori as the goal, "and then" - Hakkaku was pleased: "Serene. I as well gave that as goal at first."

Akiyama enters Hakkaku-beya for the Haru-basho. Hakkaku was at his school on the 13th, together with heya general manager Hasegawa. The shindeshi kensa for Haru is on March 2nd, one day after the graduation ceremony. Another one without indication of the precise basho

Hikaru Hasegawa 長谷川 輝 (18, 177.7kg, 162.3kg) from Kamogawa-city, 3rd year at Chiba-pref. Awa high school will enter Takadagawa-beya, as the first ever from that high school. Grip power: right 97kg, left 80kg. In middle and high school he did judo, this year he was 3rd in the over 100kg category at the pref. level soutai. One relative is a former rikishi, and in his 2nd year he thought about entering ozumo.

"At least juryo, maegashira, and from there aiming for higher. I want to become a rikishi loved and cheered for by a variety of people."

Unlike Hasegawa, the next one for Takadagawa-beya is really for this thread:

Atara Yokoyama 横山新 (15, 176cm, 107kg) from Maniwa-city, Okayama, enters Takadagawa-beya. On a field trip to the heya he made the decision to become rikishi after graduation : "This is my place of living."

Yokoyama is left handed and his speciality is hidari-yotsu and then yori or nage. He was 2nd at the pref. middle school championships in 2018 and won there with the team. Since last July, he trained once a week with high school students at the Okayama ridaifu high sumo club.

He loves sumo since he was a small child. The heya's new 41st Shikimori Inosuke is his uncle's schoolmate, that led to his first field trip together to the heya in his 6th year: "The heya has a good atmosphere" and he was fascinated by the rikishi at full impact. The next summer he came again and took part in training - the oyakata and his sempai rikishi praised his display of the basics, shiko, teppo, suriashi. On the spot he had  decided to enter there.

"Rather than being anxious, I quickly want to do sumo. Becoming sekitori, and of course I want to aim for yokozuna in the end."

Interesting new recruit for Futagoyama-beya (I think for March but not 100% sure), 21-year-old Kiryu Matsuo (松尾 基隆), currently a student at Kawahara Medical Welfare College in Matsuyama, Ehime prefecture. He started sumo in elementary school and continued through to Nomura High School in Seiyo. However, there he felt the difference in level was too great and stopped doing sumo in his second year.

Between studying to qualify in childcare/nursery teaching and job hunting, his sumo dream was reawakened and he contacted Futagoyama-beya directly, leading to a week-long stay last summer. Due to the age limit for entering ozumo he wants to take the chance while he still can. Matsuo's initial goal is to develop confidence in his sumo, with the wider dream of becoming a sekitori at the age of 25. The press articles say he currently stands at 177cm, 122kg.

Futagoyama-oyakata (former Ozeki Miyabiyama) visited the college yesterday for a press conference.

Kardan Sufabato(??) 20 years old today, Takanoiwa's nephew, went to Saitama Sakae school with Naya, lost to Houshouryuu in the finals of a regional tournament in the past, 1.80/130, Onoe Beya. "I followed my uncle to Japan. I wish to gambarize," he said. "I see him reaching Makushita quickly  - from there, it's up to his efforts." added ex-Takanoiwa.

Joining Musashigawa-beya is 18-year-old Komei Yanagida (柳田 孔明), currently a third-year student on the wrestling squad at Takamatsu Agriculture High School in Okayama prefecture. In 2018 he took third place in the Greco-Roman 125kg weight division at the Kokutai, following that with the runner-up spot at the national high school championships. He also took third place in the Freestyle 125kg at the Interhigh.

He met the shisho (former Yokozuna Musashimaru) several times while he was travelling the country looking for new recruits and was drawn towards ozumo, despite having the potential to continue with wrestling at the top universities. He wants to emulate former Sekiwake Washuyama, a fellow Okayama native - Yanagida happens to be roughly the same height.

Meanwhile, the new gyoji I suggested for March is joining Nishiiwa-beya, a 17-year-old from Aomori, the home of the shisho. He'll be Kimura something (木村 公輝), but no reading for the given name yet. Koki perhaps. Seen here with the rest of the heya.

 

Finally, a generic heads-up for the future as I haven't seen any specifics about officially joining yet, but Irumagawa-beya has lined up a potential new recruit from Ukraine, Sergey Sokolovsky, who was a runner-up at the World Championships last year. A farewell party was held at the Japanese embassy in Kiev in November, and he's apparently been at the heya since then.

It's definitely not Chiyotairyu since he's in a different ichimon. Everyone except Sergey (and Shimanoumi??, who would be a juryo rikishi in the ichimon) is a Dewanoumi-ichimon makuuchi rikishi.

研修生 kenshuusei you become in Japan e.g. as foreign student before you get to a proper one,  like kenkyusei. I had half a year as well for my mombusho scholarship. Language courses were held during that time. I was at the institute before and went on without, but officially remained kenshuusei.

I was astonished when with Roga, also in sumo kenshusei appeared, I haven't  seen this new system explained yet.
