Joining Fujishima-beya is 18-year-old Yuto? Suzuki (鈴木 優斗), currently in his final year at Hiryu high school in Numazu, Shizuoka prefecture. He started doing sumo in elementary school, his power caught the eye of Fujishima-oyakata (former Ozeki Musoyama) and he later visited the heya for keiko while in middle school. Earlier this year he reached the semi-finals of the interhigh competition, and helped the school to third place in the team competition.

He currently stands at 181cm, 150kg and is a tsuki-oshi specialist, wanting to do sumo like the shisho. He also hopes to meet his "natural enemy" Daisuke Saito (high school Yokozuna) on the ozumo dohyo, having lost five times to him across their school years.

Sounds like he might get his wish!

That's Niigata Kaiyo High School, their sumo club is pretty good.

Saito! (Clappingwildly...)

Saito is a very well-rounded competitor and I think has all the makings of a sekitori. Last year he won both of high school sumo's major titles (Interhigh and Kokutai), the junior world championships, and showed excellent consistency--making it at least to the semifinals of 6 of the 7 national high school tournaments. To me he has been significantly more impressive than all the other recent Saitama Sakae recruits (Naya, Kototebakari, Tsukahara, Tochikamiyama, etc.) and he certainly outperformed them in high school.

Here he is beating Naya in the final of a 2017 national tournament, winning it in his 2nd year. Roga was a semifinalist in the same tournament.

Plenty of coverage in the news & wideshows (links updated) - because of Saito, mostly in combinations:

Saito with Touma - yesterday Goody 3:12h-3:30h , today Tokudane - 8:27h-8:43h

Saito with sempai Takakeisho and his new salt kesho-mawashi - yesterday Prime news 6:53h-6:55h & SportsWatcher (at 12min)

Today Saito had a pep rally at his old middle school home in Sakata

img_2019022200313.jpgo

his local Yamagata paper vid:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ITSO1wUZj8

local NHK vid: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/lnews/yamagata/20190222/6020003056.html

Kitanofuji was there for the oyakata, apparently he was an extra factor behind Saito going to Hakkaku-beya. The connection to the heya started as 4th grade: he trained at the heya to prepare for the national wampaku championships. Saito had planned to go to university first, but the oyakata at the year end/start made some rare extra effort to get him earlier, telling him"Let's gambarize together", as Saito came for a stay at the heya after the All Japans. The wideshows also mention the effect of Takakeisho' yusho: Saito wants to quickly catch up with his Saitama Sakae yusho winning sempai Goeido and Takakeisho -  sempai Hokutofuji is in the same heya.

His father was a baseball athlete, and till 6th grade he was preparing for both careers and did baseball a well as sumo, after getting swept away by Touma again after a 4th grade first defeat, he decided to concentrate on sumo and in middle school crushed Touma. He's still an exceptional athlete in general, running the 50m in the 6 second range (the average for high school 3rd years in Japan is 7.16s).

"I want to become a great rikishi like the oyakata" "I want to become sekitori to give something back to coach Yamada"

About Touma: He wants to become the first yokozuna from Okinawa - several heya tried to scout him, but Hakuho had him secured since primary school, after he had invited him to the Hakuho cup, when he paid for the flight from Okinawa and provided the accommodation. Touma wanted to join Miyagino-beya already after middle school, but Hakuho introduced him to Tottori-high, to have him study at another sumo stronghold school first to build his body - and Hakuho now declared he'll have him at first get his weight down.

Name reading confirmed in the local NHK local vid: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/lnews/niigata/20190222/1030006902.html

His father, who died last year at age 69,  made Ouba start sumo in middle school "I want to report to my father, who watches from the sky, that I join ozumo." He had decided to follow that path in middle school.  "First I'll aim for juryo."

He won all his 3 team bouts for Kaiyo in the interhigh preliminaries, but wasn't in the team for the final tournament.

The oyakata about their first meeting: "When I was at Kaiyo high to watch keiko, he had an air of "Please call out to me" about him, and I got the feeling "I should call out to that kid."

Big new sumo hope Saito, after reporting his start as a pro to the mayor of his hometown Sakata on the 22nd, with the promise "I'll get strong enough that it is PR for Sakata", received from the mayor 60kg of the local Yukiwakamaru rice - and the city's PR crest.

Kitanofuji: "My younger sister runs a chanko restaurant in Sakata, and due to that I first met him before he entered middle school, already then with a promising future. He won't let us wait long to hear "... Sakata shusshin, Hakkaku-beya" in the broadcast (of makuuchi on NHK)."

Atara Yokoyama 横山新 (15, 176cm, 107kg) from Maniwa-city, Okayama, enters Takadagawa-beya. On a field trip to the heya he made the decision to become rikishi after graduation : "This is my place of living."

Today Yokoyama had an early graduation ceremony just for him: he leaves for Osaka and can't be at the ceremony for all. In front of about 300 pupils, with a speech by the oyakata, a student representative and from him: "I will stick to the teachings of the oyakata and the senior deshi, and won't evade hard training. I want to become a strong rikishi. Goal is, first of all aiming for sekitori, yokozuna. I devote myself to reach this goal, so please root for me."

Complete guess on the readings of his name, but joining Sadogatake-beya is 15-year-old Yakumo? Egashira? (江頭 八雲), joining from Sasagurikita Junior High school in Sasaguri, Fukuoka. 173cm, 98kg. A farewell assembly was held at the school a couple of weeks ago to send him off.

XulHClkt_o.jpg

Joining Hakkaku-beya is 15-year-old Norito? Nakata (中田 智斗) from Kurisawa Junior High School in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, the same hometown as heya senior Hokutoiwami. As far as I can tell he has no sumo background, but has baseball experience. He got interested in sumo after watching it on a school trip last May. His goal is to become a sekitori in five years.

Joining Onomatsu-beya is Akimichi Inaba (稲葉 陽通), from the sumo team of Kagoshima Jitsugyo High School in Kagoshima prefecture.

3RnHImeu_o.jpg

Joining Nishiiwa-beya is 17-year-old Rui Toriumi (鳥海 塁) from Nagano, Nagano prefecture. He won the lightweight title in the prefectural junior high championship three years ago, while a student at Sanyo junior high, but I don't think he ever competed beyond the prefectural level.

That's Niigata Kaiyo High School, their sumo club is pretty good.

Another from that school called Tatsuya Maruyama was supposed to be joining Naruto-beya, but I've since read that the recent scandal there has put the brakes on that. We'll have to wait and see what happens with him, perhaps we'll see him in May instead, whether for Naruto or another heya.

He came to stay at the heya last summer and visited again in the winter. He once beat Tetsuya Ochiai (a winner at this year's Hakuho Cup) in the 6th grade final of the annual Maido Osaka sumo tournament.

The tallest of the 3 pictured for Shikoroyama looks like Chikashi Ito, who would be going into his 3rd year at Tokyo Agricultural University but seemingly dropped out. In high school he won a Kanto region title and was best 8 at the 2016 Interhigh, losing to the eventual champion. I believe he made the best 16 of a national university tournament last year, but really no major accomplishments in his brief collegiate days. He's been listed at around 189cm/140kg previously.

Here he is winning:
