Takanoiwa hits his tsukebito

Recommended Posts

Takanoiwa has hit his tsukebito 4 or 5 times on the evening of the 4th, because he made excuses for having forgotten something. No injuries, just a swollen cheek.

At the jungyo on the 5th in Yukuhashi, the tsukibito was not seen, Takanoiwa was called to Tokyo for questioning by the NSK.

No severe injuries that is, the tsukebito was treated at a hospital http://www.zakzak.co.jp/spo/news/181205/spo1812050012-n1.html

news video: http://www.news24.jp/articles/2018/12/05/07410960.html

the tsukebito is not Takayoshitoshi, else the papers would likely have mentioned it at once - the news video tells it's a 24 year old junior deshi - that would make it Masutenryu http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?shikona=&heya=7&shusshin=-1&b=201811&high=-1&hd=-1&entry=-1&intai=-1&sort=4

This is getting into Chiyohakuho territory now, where bad news keeps coming and it just seems a matter of time until the guy finally does something egregious enough to find himself dismissed.

There is plenty of cause for Takanoiwa to have pent up frustration.  For several years, Takanoiwa was the highest-ranked wrestler at Takanohana Stable, and then along came Takakeisho.  Takanoiwa's fortunes turned.  Things got much much worse with the whole Harumafuji Incident, and the botched handling of that.  Consider too that he lost the closest thing that he had to a father when Takanohana resigned.  And lastly, while it won't get him sent down to the Juryo Division (immediately), his MK showing in the last tournament in which "younger" stablemate Takakeisho won the championship must have bothered him a little bit.  Don't get me wrong, none of those things are excuses.

I am starting to realise that there is a deep rooted problem, that may or may not ever be rectified.  Takanohana repeatedly claimed that he wanted a "healthy" Sumo Association, but I think he was more concerned about the backroom politics.  But a "healthy" kyokai should also extend to training in heya.  But, if I'm not mistaken, even "healthy" reformer Takanohana faced allegations of hitting his charges on occasion.

In short, this is in part a nature-nurture debate.  Perhaps changing the "nurture" environment in stables is called for.

But at the very least, this calls for more than just a bandaid measure.  I hasten to add, even a harsh penalty like Takanoiwa's dismissal (not that that is likely) to send a message to all wrestlers would not effectively change anything.

Mongolian sumo wrestler Takanoiwa assaults attendant

Quote

The Japan Sumo Association said Wednesday that rank-and-file wrestler Takanoiwa, whose beating by former yokozuna Harumafuji caused a scandal last year, assaulted an attendant of his stable during the ongoing regional tour.

Just two months after the sport’s governing body issued a “declaration to eradicate violence,” Takanoiwa, 28, physically attacked a lower-ranked apprentice wrestler, the association said.

According to the JSA’s public relations department head, the apprentice has swelling in his face. The JSA says it will consider a punishment for Takanoiwa, who has withdrawn from the winter regional tour in Fukuoka...

One of the comments made by Shibatayama Oyakata (Public Relations Department Head) was: "He more than anyone should have known better" (本人が一番わかっているはずなのに。)

The whole tsukebito system seems weird to me.  Is it similar to the former "fagging" system in British public schools?  Is there any training for these guys (other than the experience of lower-rankers within the heya) that specifies their duties and rights?

A rikishi at Chiganoura-beya shows a message by the oyakata to the mass of media people outside: "I won't leave here today, nobody is scheduled to come. It's cold, so please return home safe."

I see seem to recall stories about him being a menace before....shooting at younger rikishi in his heya with airguns etc. Maybe Harumafuji was onto something  :-S

Takatoshi has detailed a situation from April 2014 where Takanoiwa (maegashira at the time) felt improperly greeted and proceeded to slap Takatoshi three times for his supposed insubordination.

- page 2 of the article

In addition, since-retired Takanohana-beya rikishi Koseki has testified that Takanoiwa did not bother to participate in stable chores even in his early days as a low-ranking toriteki, and routinely amused himself by shooting an air gun at fellow stable members after he had started to progress through the rankings. Further, Koseki describes early-career Takanoiwa as a slacker who would ask "Is the shisho there?" in morning time, and not bother to get up and appear for practice if he wasn't.

That case against Takanohana was stopped by the NSK in the end

It's great that the mexican soap opera is back to entertain us until the next basho.
Waiting for the big twist to happen in the next few days. Are we going to learn that takanoiwa is takanohana's son or that harumafuji is back in january as he never resign and the cerimony we saw wasn't real?

A heavy punishment is in the works, said people that know. The talk is of a few bashos suspension at the very least. I wonder if they will punish Chiganoura as well, or if they will let him off because he really wasn't Takanoiwa's oyakata long enough to be found guilty of negligence, no?

Personally I would give Chiganoura a stern warning. Shibatayama is right in saying that Takanoiwa of all people should know what kind of situation he's put himself into.

I guess the wide shows will dig out all rumors about past violent behavior of Takanoiwa - meanwhile Tokudane has a long interview with the mother and the brother of the victim this time, who apparently has suffered a bit more injuries than the tsukebito of Takayoshitoshi had -  13m-47m, Kyokushuzan on the phone as well  http://www.miomio.tv/watch/cc410843/

Sukkiri in the first 30m, with Takatoriki http://www.miomio.tv/watch/cc410761/

Viking with Ishinriki, 15m-1h50  http://www.miomio.tv/watch/cc410847/

other wide shows are still trans-coding

So far it seems that the pervasive problems are a legacy of Takanohana beya, but it's unclear if Chiganoura oyakata was a part of the problem when he was a coach there, or perhaps branched out to open his own heya because he disagreed with the way things were. In any case, the ton of bricks should fall squarely on Takanoiwa. His role in the HMF affair and the later lawsuit strongly point to troublemaker. A minimum two-basho suspension with the accompanying fall on the banzuke would be in order.

Instead of a ban he should be promoted to sanyaku for January and then set the condition that he gets a double-digit kachikoshi or he’s dismissed. 15 days of getting smacked about by the yaku ranks is a much better punishment than a holiday.

Sloppy first reports as usual - the victim is Takataisho, who is only 23 years old.
