Salary raise

Recommended Posts

For the first time in 18 years, the Kyokai has decided to raise the sekitoris' salaries. It will be a 6-7% raise. A Yokozuna will receive a 3,000,000 yen (approximately $25,000) yen monthly salary, up from 2,820,000 yen. An Ozeki will receive 2,500,000 yen, up from 2,340,000 yen and Juryo rikishi will receive 1,110,000 yen, up from 1,036,000 yen. The non-salaried will also get a 10% raise of their allowance.

Better than too late. He’s back making money after a two-year absence just when they give the guys a pay rise.

Between the sales tax raise and removal of deductions for "high" earners the real buying power is probably going to remain largely the same.

Now that brings a tear to my eye...I've been a "serious" (as opposed to purely casual before) sumo fan since the summer of 2002, and that's the first sekitori salary raise I'm around for.

Akinomaki probably has the old data from the 1990s - I think the annual raise used to be 6% in those days?

Yes, it used to be 6% till 1995 (I had stopped recording the data then)

Year Y O S M J
1992 1800 1497 1077 829 654
1993 1874 1559 1124 868 687
1994 1987 1653 1192 921 729
1995 2107 1753 1264 977 773

I had added the recent data 2011, time for an update of http://www.achimp.de/kyuukin.htm#income

 2011 2820 2347 1693 1309 1036

my kensho data also haven't been updated yet after the increase

Any information anywhere on all the other monetary amounts?  Mochikyukin multiplier, retirement bonuses, Yusho, Sansho, Kensho, etc?  Those two articles Akinomaki linked were rather short and didn't appear to list anything else.  The Mochikyukin multiplier I'm guessing would be 4250, a 6.25% increase, if it changes.  That's the nicest-looking number in the 6-7% range, but it also might be true that it doesn't change as often given that it's an extremely round number right now and they might not bother changing it until it should get to 5000.  Similarly, perhaps it's only the salaries that are going up and everything else is staying the same.

Safe to say nothing else is getting adjusted, if it hasn't been reported thus far.

As for the mochikyukin multiplier, it's not like there's a history of even semi-frequent changes there, anyway:

since 1998: 4000
1985-1997:  2500
1970-1984:  1500
until 1969: 1000

Similarly, the prize money for yusho hasn't been touched since 1994. Kensho will presumably be adjusted again if/when the planned sales tax increase to 10% finally goes through.

Yes, that’s always been the way. The difference between the two ranks is negligible.

Bimonthly, as in every 2 months, or semimonthly = twice a month?

Bimonthly as in every basho.

That is a pretty slim allowance, as I have heard -- first time I've seen actual figures.  Thanks for the info!

There's also a slight allowance per win and per KK if I remember correctly, to encourage those that just want to be janitors and cooks to actually try on the dohyo.
