Pick The Yusho Winners Kyushu 2018

Recommended Posts

This is the thread for the Pick The Yusho Winners (PTYW) game for Kyushu 2018.

Please note the change in email address at the end of this post. I can still receive your messages at my shaw address but I'm transitioning to the gmail one.

Until further notice, the game will run just as it has the last several times. I will compile the results and post them as best as I can on this thread.

This is a pre-basho game where each player selects a rikishi from each of 8 sections of the banzuke. The player earns points for each win, each kachikoshi, and each yusho earned by their team of 8 rikishi. The sections of the banzuke are these:

Sanyaku (Y through K)

Maegashira

Juryo

Upper Makushita (Ms1-15 ) (not including any tsukedashi of any rank)

Lower Makushita (Ms16-60 plus tsukedashi if any - including Ms 10 or 15)

Sandanme (plus tsukedashi if any)

Jonidan

Jonokuchi

That's it! Simple to understand, difficult to master. The hallmarks of any engaging game.

Please send your 8 selections to me before the beginning of action on Shonichi.

Itachi: matsuorussellj@gmail.com or by pm here at the forum

As a reminder, I am only a temporary caretaker of this game until Oshirokita can address the reconstruction of his system. All banzuke, website, and records updates will be on hold until then but the game itself and results postings will continue here on this thread.

Good luck with your picks.

I think either something has changed with the forum or my browser, or I've just forgotten how to get the format to present correctly.

Anyway, the tables are not as presentable as before but here they are with the final results (in the two posts above).

Congratulations to Flohru who takes the yusho for the 6th time since I have been presenting results.

Also, well done Torafujii who collects his 4th jun-yusho during that period.

Thanks for playing everyone!

Itachi

Thanks Itachi! After Day 12 I was kind of hoping to have picked all 6 yusho winners (did anyone ever manage that?), but Yago being Yago and Tomokaze becoming dominant prevented that even before Takayasu stumbled on the verge of his first yusho.

Congrats to Flohru! Only 6th yusho? Feels like a lot more...

Nope, never happened. Your results this basho were still very impressive.

I remember needing to score close to 80 points to feel I had a chance at winning the yusho. Picking 4 winners happened often enough, but still somewhat rare.

This was a great result for Flohru. You nearly earned your tsuna in the Oshirokita era.

Itachi, it'd be interesting to see a summary of yusho & jun-yusho since you've run PTYW.

I'm working on it! It's done, but I just need to prepare it in a proper format for presentation.

Meanwhile, here are some key figures:

I've administrated the last 36 basho.

During that time, the top score for a yusho winner was 92 points! (Vikanohara Aki 2014)

The lowest yusho winning score was 49 points! (the game's creator, Oshirokita, Hatsu 2018)

The average yusho winning score during my 36 basho administation is 72.7 points (rounded to nearest tenth of a point)

The top yusho winners have been Flohru (6), Tenshinhan (5), and Torafujii (4), with several players tied at 3 yusho or fewer.
Flohru has also won the most jun-yusho with 8, followed by Achiyama with 6, the drone Genzai with 5, and Torafujii and Kuroimori both with 4, Gurowake with 3, and several tied with 2 or fewer.

That 92 pointer by Vikanohara in Aki 2014 was pretty special. Many players scored well that basho, but V was only 4 points off the best possible score for that basho of 96. Got 5 of 6 yusho winners (missed Sandanme Takagi) and one of his Makushita picks scored 5 wins where a 6 winner was available. So 6 of 8 picks were best possible and the other 2 were each 1 win short of best possible.
