Well, well. That puts a bit of pressure on Kisenosato, which isn’t really what he needs, but also opens up the yusho race completely. Mitaekumi’s ozeki-run may yet still be on track and Takayasu has to set himself the goal of winning – he’s the only Y/O not to have a yusho to his name.

Well, if they wanted to clear out the field for the Japanese Yokozuna, they couldn't have done a better job.  IMHO, the problem is that there are three members of Sanyaku who have already won a Basho, and others who are thinking this is their Golden Ticket.  Kisenosato looked astonishingly good last time, but not yusho-good.

Takayasu or Tochinoshin for me. The former doesn’t have one and the latter is just a rikishi I admire. 

I’d also root for a hiramaku yusho too. Perhaps one of the Yamas or even surprise return to form from Giku-san.

He's my favourite so I'm definitely hoping he'll show a return to form this time round, but alas, I think the yusho may be out of his grasp. If he was down at a super low rank like Yoshikaze was last basho, then maybe, but after an MK at M8...

Personally I fancy one of the Ozeki's this time too, though I don't know if I can pick between them... with Kise for the Jun-yusho and I think Ichinojo is my wild card bet

The 'ak brothers are out, oh, my, my.   we know it isn't a sure thing for Kise.   Takayasu, Mita (Ozekiship motivataed), Goeido (who looked good in the last basho), Tochinoshin will be primed for the yusho.  Heck, even Takakisho, Hokutofuji, Ichinojo may factor in somewhere in the yusho race.    But I will go with Takayasu, and my 2nd bet would be Tochinoshin.

 

Wait a few more days and maybe even Kise may call in sick ....

So for this basho Ichinojo is Mongolia's  top-ranked wrestler. That could have interesting consequences. Remember what Ichinojo did to Kisenosato in September?

This is so disappointing. There are so many exciting match-ups I was looking forward to that wont be happening now.

I guess the only good thing I can say about the top guys going kyujo so frequently, is that it gives us a slightly better chance of seeing a new Yokozuna emerge before the impending retirements, which I expect to come in fairly close succession. Maybe my hypothetical new Yokozuna wont be very strong though, since he needed the old guard to sit down and make room for him.

On the other hand, maybe it gives a better chance for one of the college boys like Asanoyama to reach the top of the field, which would be interesting.

The most exciting matchups for my money are between the Ozeki and junior sanyaku and they’re all present and correct at the time of writing. Among the Yokozuna Kisenosato provides the most interest at the moment and he’s there too. I think we’re in for a great basho.

So he is. Oh well. Still, I had in mind the likes of Mitakeumi, Tochinoshin, Takayasu and Goeido, who are all serious contenders for the title without Hakuho and Kakuryu. That’s where the intrigue lies.

I was hoping I'd found another believer in the wild Tbh when he first dropped into the rank and file I thought he'd fall further than he did and have a genuine chance at being a yusho contender from the bottom. Less so now for sure though...

Agreed, I'm currently just hoping I'll make it to a basho in time to see him before he retires. Anyway, I'm hoping he'll put up at least a 9/6 as its Kyushu, and i don't think he wants to meet Toyonoshima again after all this time down in Juryo

I was at Haru 2007 when he made his sanyaku debut. It all seems such a long time ago now.
