New recruits for Kyushu 2018

Recommended Posts

I post recruit news in the upcoming threads if I don't know the exact basho:

Isegahama-beya has regular events in Goshogawara, and from the sumo club of the local commercial high school, 3rd year Hiromasa Denpoya 伝法谷 洋匡 (he looks twice 18) has decided to enter the heya. "Even if it takes some time, I want to become sekitori." http://www.toonippo.co.jp/articles/-/96398

with the oyakata today at the school

Hard to embed pic in the club, one other member and the coach, with a yusho portrait of the oyakata on the wall: http://www.shimoyamagakuen.ed.jp/highschool/post-4.html

I don't know how his sumo will be, but he already knows how to wear a suit!

Details were hidden behind the pay wall, but another partial article and a site that shows part of the rest reveal:

Denpoya (18, 186cm, 128kg) plans to start in maezumo at the Kyushu basho

It's kinda interesting that Isegahama has been following a different recruiting approach since 2016. While the majority of the heya try to present new deshi during the early months of the year (probably due to the academic year ending in March), this particular stable puts its emphasis on November.

LINK

(2016.11 even had one more shin deshi (Toranofuji), but he is not on the list due to retirement between November 2016 and November 2017).

You're right. 6 of 8 in 2016. 4 of 10 in 2017. How many in 2018?

I dunno if "recruiting approach" is the correct word here. Their recent recruits are nearly all high schoolers, and it frequently happens with them that they're able to join as early as November. Isegahama simply seems to put more of a focus on enabling that than other stables do, perhaps by being less strict about letting them travel back for any remaining school obligations during the early months (since the maezumo basho doesn't necessarily require full-time presence at the stable yet). I don't think it would be difficult for other stables to do the same thing with their high school rookies, they just largely choose not to.

... and I thought Osunarashi looked like he was in his late 30s when he was actually only 26.   Hiromasa easily beats Osunarashi in "looking older than own age."

4 have applied for the shin-deshi kensa on the 31st, among them Motohiro Hamasu 浜洲泉啓  (17, Tokyo-to shusshin, Saitama Sakae high) the first son of Onoe-oyakata  - for his father's heya, and also from Saitama Sakae, Ryutaro Shimomura 下村龍太朗 (18, Osaka-fu shusshin), the son of ex-Tsunenoyama, for Sakaigawa-beya. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20181029/sum18102919570004-n1.html

Hamasu had done basketball and changed to Saitama Sakae 2 years ago and joined the sumo club. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20160906/ddm/035/050/037000c.html

that part of the article is now behind the pay wall

Quote

Saitama Sakae Shimomura info: https://www.bbm-japan.com/_ct/17193131

Shimomura was active member of the winning team at the interhigh till the 2nd round of the finals http://kirokukensaku.net/0IH18/discipline_120_20180805.html

Azumazeki-beya also has a Mongolian recruit whose name I won't attempt to decipher: 18-year old ナサンジャルガラ チンゾリグwho joins from Meitoku Gijuku high school.

Nasanjargal Chinzorig, I would guess. Doesn't seem to have made any waves above the prefectural level. For what little it's worth, here's a Facebook post of the Meitoku sumo club about him qualifying for a national high school tournament in the -100 kg class, and I believe this PDF by the Kochi prefecture high school athletic federation lists what he did there (reached the third round - not sure what placement that equates to, but must be last 16 or below, as they've listed specific round names from the quarterfinals onward).

In preparation for the Kyokai site screwing up the name order again - Amarsanaa and Chinzorig should be the given names.

The okamisan reports that Chinzorig will fight as Daitenma (大天馬) in maezumo this basho.

Meanwhile Onomatsu okamisan reports that Narumi is expected to return from banzuke-gai after over a year out of action, and I think I read last month that Chiganoura-beya's Yuriki will be coming back too.

All 4 passed the initial check at the shindeshi-kensa today and wait for the results of the medicals. Shimomura had good results in track and field (shot put Osaka pref. yusho) and in his 2nd year switched to Saitama Sakae middle school and sumo. He was born after his father had long left the NSK, but since early childhood thought to join ozumo. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2018/10/31/kiji/20181031s00005000219000c.html

Hamasu had meningitis in the summer of his first year in high school and couldn't train properly during the time at Saitama Sakae, mainly just at a gym, but he's completely recovered now. Consequently he has only few tournament experience. He admired his father in videos he saw and that made him decide to join.

Hamasu (174cm, 115kg) wants to surpass his father (komusubi), the dream of Shimomura (178cm, 116kg) is to become yokozuna.

The papers apparently lost interest in the measuring pics without Tamanoi.

Azechiazechi posted a video on Twitter - Onomatsu measured

Hiromasa Denpoya 伝法谷 洋匡 , 18, Isegahama-beya, Aomori, 185.4cm, 126kg

Kazuki Watai 渡井一輝, 16, Chiganoura-beya, ,174.6cm, 91kg

Ryutaro Shimomura 下村龍太朗,18 , Osaka-fu , Sakaigawa-beya, 177.9cm, 116kg

Motohiro Hamasu 浜洲泉啓, 17, Onoe-beya, Tokyo-to, 174.1cm, 115kg

Hamasu from now on has to call the parents oyakata and okamisan, so far papa and mama, and was told that he won't get gentle treatment and will face rigid training http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20181031-OHT1T50260.html

- he aims to get his father's shikona Hamanoshima in the future http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20181101/sum18110105000002-n1.html

Maezumo has started, with 4 new recruits from this basho, 2 delayed Mongolians and 3 returners.

and Takasago chanko-ban Daigonishiki returned - did 2 bouts and lost both

Amarsana is now Rouga 狼雅 - the typical Mongolian wolf like in Seirou, with the Miyabi -ga of his oyakata.

I believe Chinzorig is the Mongolian wrestler recently featured on the Japanese TV show "You ha Nani Shi ni Nippon e?" (Why Did you Come to Japan?). Seems like the typical lumbering, serious, hard-working Mongolian with dreams of making a better life for himself and his family in Japan through sumo. He appears to have the size and work ethic to succeed. Hope he does.

Presentation

https://youtu.be/8jUmlCA3i7I

Amarsanaa/Roga obviously knows what he's doing (but we knew that already), and Shimomura demonstrated a decent level of competency as one would expect from a Saitama Sakae grad, but Hamasu was honestly rather disappointing given the pedigree and the Sakae affiliation. If he sticks around, I have a feeling he'll be spending much of his career tsukebito'ing for his cousin Ryuko...

Daitenma brings some clear athleticism, but otherwise seems to be a long-term project, to put it charitably, and his relative lack of impact in amasumo doesn't look too surprising now based on his Kyushu showing. The best I can say about Denpoya is that he knows how to do sumo in very broad terms; beyond that he didn't show much here, especially considering his very respectable height/weight attributes. And Watai => Persistence Watch, if he stays at all - it's always a bit difficult to watch these kids who struggle just to engage at the tachiai at all.
