Doitsuyama 1,056 Posted September 12, 2004 (edited) The last few basho saw quite some promoishing new entrants to Ozumo. They were so many that at times even a 5-2 in Jonokuchi could be a good result depending on the opponents. I looked a bit into the results of the last year and came up with the following interesting (to me, at least) 29 lower division rikishi who entered Ozumo not too long ago. Most notably is the unusually high amount of college rikishi entering in Jonokuchi over the last few basho. I listed the opponents who won against the featured rikishi next to the basho score. Some Nagoya bouts of him are on my Nagoya movie page. The highest ranked rikishi younger than Shibuya is Jd8e Shirakawa from July 1987. There even is only one rikishi higher ranked than Shibuya born in 1986, and this one of course is in high Juryo. Shibuya won't get there in the nine months he is younger, but still a top future prospect. He already has filled out a lot for his age at 173.5 kg. High school champion and only 18 years old. Already pretty weighty with 158 kilo. His 7-0 Jonokuchi yusho must have been one of the best quality Jonokuchi yusho ever if not the best, better than Onishi's yusho one basho earlier against Maenoyu. This basho Jonokuchi was stacked with high level university entrants like never before. He had to beat Isobe, Nakaita and Kimurayama among them, after that his high school rival Maenoyu, and still beat Asahisakari in a Jonokuchi 7-0 playoff. I see just now that I never made a video of that playoff. Well, I made it now (as a special edition with complete pre-bout ritual) and you can find it in the usual place. I'd say it was an excellent bout for Jonokuchi. Surprise loss to Hoshiazuma last basho ruined chances for another yusho Hoshiazuma is no prospect really, despite also beating Tamawashi from this list. Tough schedule in his first two basho with six bouts against fellow university entrants, winning them 5-1. Another loss to Kanda who also is featured in this list. Asashosakari 14,447 Posted September 12, 2004 Wow, impressive summary! (Being unsure...) That post might come in really handy in a few basho when we have a chance to take another look at this bunch and compare their progress... Most notably is the unusually high amount of college rikishi entering in Jonokuchi over the last few basho. What I find equally astounding is the high number of high school age shin-deshi lately...it really seems to become another popular career path (in addition to debuting at age 15/16 or post-college) to finish high school first and then go into sumo around age 18/19.
