Some new talents

Recommended Posts

The last few basho saw quite some promoishing new entrants to Ozumo. They were so many that at times even a 5-2 in Jonokuchi could be a good result depending on the opponents. I looked a bit into the results of the last year and came up with the following interesting (to me, at least) 29 lower division rikishi who entered Ozumo not too long ago. Most notably is the unusually high amount of college rikishi entering in Jonokuchi over the last few basho. I listed the opponents who won against the featured rikishi next to the basho score.

Ms19e  Masatsukasa    Aomori    Irumagawa   07.06.1984    182 117,9

200307 Sd61w  -*O-*--O-O-O--O 5-2 Asasegawa, Tetsuhikari
200309 Sd35e  -O-O-O-*-**-O-- 4-3 Shodai, Yakigaya, Tetsuhikari
200311 Sd22e  ---*-*O--OO--O- 4-2 Shikinoumi, Wakakasuga
200401 Sd8e   O-O-*--O-OO---* 5-2 Hoshikaze, Hananosato
200403 Ms45w  *--OO--OO--OO-- 6-1 Tokinoboru
200405 Ms19e  -O*--**--*-O--O 3-4 Furuichi, Hochiyama, Nakano, Kitataiki
200407 Ms25e  -*-O-O-O-O*-*-- 4-3 Fujinokaze, Masutsuyoshi, Kaonishiki

His rank already is very high for his age; only few younger rikishi are ranked higher (Hagiwara 1986, Hakuho, Kakuryu 1985; Ama and Kotoshogiku are the only in 1984 higer than him, but older). Some Nagoya bouts of him are on my Nagoya movie page.

Ms44w  Tokusegawa     Mongolia  Kiriyama    06.08.1983    188   105

200309 Jk38e  O-O--*O-O--O-O- 6-1 Fujimoto
200311 Jd68w  O-*--O-O-OO-O-- 6-1 Chiyonishiki
200401 Sd96w  -OO--O-O-*-O-O- 6-1 Amanoumi
200403 Sd36w  O-*--OO--OO-O-- 6-1 Miyamoto
200405 Ms51w  -**--OO--*-O*-- 3-4 Shotenyu, Hoshikaze, Kakuo, Mokonami
200407 Sd5w   -OO-O-*-O--*O-- 5-2 Daishochi, Tamamitsukuni

The tall and light Mongolian isn't that young anymore, same birth year as a heap of higher ranked talents (Kotooshu, Toyonoshima, Wakakirin, Tamaasuka, Chiyohakuho, Ryuo, Kirinowaka, Hananosato, Hakuba, Daiyuchi and Nakanokuni). Still, his career is much shorter than of those in the above list, and he may have the potential to overtake several of them.

Sd2w   Shibuya        Tokyo     Tamanoi     19.04.1987    181 173,5

200305 Jk13e  -OO-O--*O-*--O- 5-2 Kagaya, Kagemaru

200407 Sd13e  O--*-O-**--O-O- 4-3 Tamao, Hokutoarashi, Surugatsukasa

Highest ranked rikishi with birth year 1987, next are Korean Sd59w Kinryuzan, Takanohana-beya Shirozuka at Sd97e and Sasaki at Sd99e, all three older though. The highest ranked rikishi younger than Shibuya is Jd8e Shirakawa from July 1987. There even is only one rikishi higher ranked than Shibuya born in 1986, and this one of course is in high Juryo. Shibuya won't get there in the nine months he is younger, but still a top future prospect. He already has filled out a lot for his age at 173.5 kg.

Sd6e   Onishi         Oita      Oguruma     19.03.1982    176   126

200403 Jk27w  -O-OO--OO--OO-- 7-0
200405 Jd23e  O--O-O-*O-O-O-- 6-1 Asahimaru
200407 Sd60w  O--O-O-*-O-O-O- 6-1 Tamaryoma

The smallish 22 years old Nittaidai university entrant got a good start losing only two bouts and quickly approaches Makushita now.

Sd10e  Fujimoto       Fukuoka   Onomatsu    09.06.1986    179 111,5

200309 Jk36w  O-O--OO--O-OO-- 7-0

200407 Sd23w  *--*-OO--*O-O-- 4-3 Hoshizakura, Sadanoshima, Toho

Still very young at 18 (highest ranked rikishi from 1986 behind you-know-who), no make-koshi and he'll be in Makushita with another kachi-koshi in Aki.

Sd29e  Sokokurai      China     Arashio     09.01.1984    185  99,7

200311 Jk36w  O-O--OO-O-O-O-- 7-0
200401 Jd25w  -#------------- 0-1
200403 Jd96e  O-O--OO--OO-O-- 7-0 Keno
200405 Sd87e  O-O--O-O-*-*-O- 5-2 Bungonishiki, Danyu
200407 Sd54w  O-*-O-*--OO-O-- 5-2 Kaishin, Seiryu

A young very light Chinese showing few difficulties so far to adapt to the Sandanme level. I think he will need to bulk up a lot to be a Makushita contender.

Sd30e  Kurazono       Kagoshima Mihogaseki  07.06.1981    181   116

200403 Jk29w  -O-O*-O--OO-O-- 6-1 Onishi
200405 Jd55e  -O-*O--O-OO---O 6-1 Mizuno
200407 Sd88w  -OO-O-O-*-O-O-- 6-1 Chiyonohana

This Nichidai university entrant had only one loss in each basho. Already 23 years old, he will have to continue with that to show real promise.

Sd46e  Maenoyu        Mongolia  Takadagawa  28.04.1984    185   158

200403 Jk27e  -*O--O*--OO---O 5-2 Onishi, Mizuno

200407 Jd7w   O--O-O-O-O-O*-- 6-1 Chiyonohana

Maenoyu is very powerful built, especially for a Mongolian. After a 5-2 in Jonokuchi he missed out on a 7-0 in Jonidan only in the last bout, two times. Given his build and age of 20 years I expect him to be a Sekitori sooner than later.

Sd51e  Mizuno         Gifu      Kise        22.11.1985    178   144

200403 Jk28e  O--*-OO-O-O-O-- 6-1 Kurazono
200405 Jd54w  O--O-*O-O--*O-- 5-2 Tetsuhibiki, Fujita
200407 Jd13w  -O*--O-OO--O-O- 6-1 Kakushoma

Already has beaten several strong opponents (Maenoyu, Kurazono) and is still 18 years old. Very young and with good weight, he should be in high Makushita in one year or two. Then we'll see if he can elevate to another level.

Sd51w  Kazafuzan      KazakhstanNishikido   06.04.1984    182 132,5

200401 Jk33w  O-O--*O--O-OO-- 6-1 Keno
200403 Jd60w  -*-OO-O--O-OO-- 6-1 Minemura
200405 Sd92e  O--O-*-O-OO--O- 6-1 Isoazuma
200407 Sd34e  *-*-O--O-**---O 3-4 Kyokuhikari, Wakachikuba, Wakakasuga, Hotaka

20 years old, first professional Sumotori from Kazakhstan. Three 6-1 followed by a make-koshi in higer Sandanme.

Sd59e  Dewaotori      Osaka     Dewanoumi   22.11.1985    184   158

200405 Jk14e  -OO-O--OO-O-O-- 7-0
200407 Jd21e  *-O--OO--OO--O- 6-1 Hoshiazuma

This one is a huge prospect. High school champion and only 18 years old. Already pretty weighty with 158 kilo. His 7-0 Jonokuchi yusho must have been one of the best quality Jonokuchi yusho ever if not the best, better than Onishi's yusho one basho earlier against Maenoyu. This basho Jonokuchi was stacked with high level university entrants like never before. He had to beat Isobe, Nakaita and Kimurayama among them, after that his high school rival Maenoyu, and still beat Asahisakari in a Jonokuchi 7-0 playoff. I see just now that I never made a video of that playoff. Well, I made it now (as a special edition with complete pre-bout ritual) and you can find it in the usual place. I'd say it was an excellent bout for Jonokuchi. Surprise loss to Hoshiazuma last basho ruined chances for another yusho Hoshiazuma is no prospect really, despite also beating Tamawashi from this list.

Sd60e  Hamaeiko       Tokyo     Mihogaseki  07.05.1985    174  98,5

200407 Sd39w  O--*-*-O-**---O 3-4 Taika, Tamanotaka, Miyamaru, Yutakaumi

Young guy with better than average progress. Make-koshi in first basho at higher Sandanme.

Sd84w  Shiraishi      Kumamoto  Mihogaseki  16.07.1981    173   120

200405 Jk9w   -O*-O-O--OO-*-- 5-2 Kanda, Kimurayama
200407 Jd92e  O--O-OO-O-O-O-- 7-0

Another 23 years old college entrant, from Nichidai university. Tough schedule in his first two basho with six bouts against fellow university entrants, winning them 5-1. Another loss to Kanda who also is featured in this list. Jonidan was stacked with those college prospects so the yusho last basho is really meaningful.

Sd87e  Tamawashi      Mongolia  Kataonami   16.11.1984    187   136

200403 Jk28w  *-*-O-O--O-O--* 4-3 Mizuno, Shima, Kainohama

200407 Jd25w  O--O-*-O-*-O--O 5-2 Hoshiazuma, Taiheizan

Young Mongolian had a hard time in his Jonokuchi basho. 5-2 in Jonidan last basho wasn't that strong too. First lower Sandanme basho must be 5-2 at least to show further promise.

Sd88e  Kanda          Gunma     Miyagino    02.02.1986    173   191

200401 Jk32w  -*-O*--O-OO--O- 5-2 Keno, Okanohana

200407 Jd55w  O--*O-O-O--OO-- 6-1 Tokachiumi

18-years old guy with career record of 17-4 just belongs in this list. Super-heavy with 191 kg, especially considering his age. Will be interesting to follow.

Sd93e  Kimurayama     Wakayama  Kasugano    13.07.1981    180   146

200405 Jk12e  -O-O-OO-O-*-O-- 6-1 Dewaotori
200407 Jd62e  -O-O-OO--O-O*-- 6-1 Shiraishi

23-years old Toyodai university entrant with two very strong basho until now. He still has to find a barrier, and lower Sandanme probably isn't it.

Jd4w   Kainohama      Brazil    Tomozuna    17.06.1986    184   140

200403 Jk30w  O--O-O-*O-*---O 5-2 Onishi, Mizuno
200405 Jd86e  -O-OO--O*-O---* 5-2 Maenoyu, Wakatenyu
200407 Jd41e  -O-OO-*--*-O--O 5-2 Kiozan, Dainin

Young Brazilian with solid progress in his first few basho. Losses to Onishi, Mizuno and Maenoyu are nothing to be ashamed of.

Jd15e  Satoyama       Kagoshima Mihogaseki  31.05.1981    176   113

200405 Jk10w  -----O-O-O-O-O- 5-0
200407 Jd92w  -OO--OO-*-O-O-- 6-1 Yamamoto

The next 23-years old Nichidai university entrant. Only one career loss, but still in Jonidan because starting some days late in his Jonokuchi basho.

Jd17e  Isobe          Shizuoka  Irumagawa   21.12.1981    176   122

200405 Jk15w  O-*-O-O--*-O--O 5-2 Dewaotori, Shiraishi
200407 Jd94w  O--*O-O-O-O--O- 6-1 Shiraishi

Toyodai university entrant. Lost only to Dewaotori and Shiraishi so far, but also won only against one other university entrant, so schedule was a bit soft.

Jd22w  Kosei          China     Azumazeki   18.09.1985  192,5   134

200401 Jk36e  O--O-O-OO--O*-- 6-1 Keno
200403 Jd63e  O-*-*-O-*--O-O- 4-3 Kirizakura, Jiguruma, Minemura
200405 Jd41w  -*-*-*-#------- 0-4 Arashitenyu, Dewanonada, Minozakura
200407 Jd102e -O-O-O*-O-O--O- 6-1 Satoyama

Still 18 years-old Chinese. Apparently injured two basho ago. 6-1 in last basho's Jonidan is a good feat.

Jd27e  Nakaita        Ishikawa  Magaki      18.12.1981    167    92

200405 Jk23w  O--O-O-O*-O-O-- 6-1 Dewaotori
200407 Jd69e  -O-O-*-O-O-O*-- 5-2 Yuzawa, Uchigoshiki

Probably also from college, as he is 22 years old. I don't know which one though. Very light with only 92 kg.

Jd30e  Baruto         Estonia   Mihogaseki  05.11.1984    197   141

200407 Jk40e  -OO--O-OO--OO-- 7-0

Ok, forum knows already about him. Next European prospect (west from Ural) after Takanoyama and Kotooshu. Only 19 years old.

Jd33w  Yamamoto       Yamaguchi Shikoroyama 16.04.1981    185   121

200405 Jk13e  O--*-O*-O--O-*- 4-3 Kimurayama, Isobe, Satoyama
200407 Jd114e -O-O-O-OO-*--O- 6-1 Shiraishi

The next 23-years old Nichidai university entrant. 4-3 Jonokuchi debut doesn't look good, but losses so far only against fellow college entrants.

Jd40e  Saito          Tochigi   Onomatsu    14.08.1981    183   153

200405 Jk21w  O--O-*-OO-*---# 4-3 Nakaita, Shiraishi
200407 Jd122e -O-O-OO--O-O*-- 6-1 Baruto

The next one from college, Sendai university. Close to Jonidan yusho playoff last basho, but losing to Baruto.

Jd54w  Ogurayama      Oita      Musashigawa 15.05.1984    175   102

200405 Jk23e  *-O-O--*-OO--O- 5-2 Nakaita, Saito
200407 Jd104w O--*-O-*-OO-O-- 5-2 Komanosho, Wakarikido

Also listed as college entrant, from Daitobunkadai university. At 20 years a lot younger than the rest though.

Jd62e  Nakamuragawa   Mie       Irumagawa   04.08.1988    172   120

200405 Jk32e  O--O*--O-OO-*-- 5-2 Asahisakari, Nakaita
200407 Jd112e -*O--O-OO--O-*- 5-2 Nakanose, Kosei

The only dragon in this list, just had his 16th birthday. Not the highest ranked dragon (this is Kagamio at Jd56e), but 10-4 in first two basho is good, considering the opponents.

Jd78w  Takaazuma      Brazil    Tamanoi     17.07.1981    179   150

200407 Jk38w  O-*-O-O--OO-O-- 6-1 Baruto

The next Brazilian shin-deshi, but a lot older at 23 years already. Lost only to Baruto.

Jd79e  Sugita         Shizuoka  Kitanoumi   24.11.1981    168   105

200407 Jk39e  *--O-O-O-OO-O-- 6-1 Takaazuma

Perhapse a college entrant, as he is 22 already, but I don't know. Lost only to Takaazuma.

Jd95w  Asahisakari    Tokushima Dewanoumi   15.07.1981    188   125

200405 Jk29w  O-O-O-O-O-O-O-- 7-0 Dewaotori
200407 Jd25e  --------------- 0-0

Lost playoff to Dewaotori and missed last basho injured. Asahidai university entrant is already 23 years old. Sadly absent in Aki as well.

Wow, impressive summary! (Being unsure...) That post might come in really handy in a few basho when we have a chance to take another look at this bunch and compare their progress...

Most notably is the unusually high amount of college rikishi entering in Jonokuchi over the last few basho.

What I find equally astounding is the high number of high school age shin-deshi lately...it really seems to become another popular career path (in addition to debuting at age 15/16 or post-college) to finish high school first and then go into sumo around age 18/19.

Let me just chime in with the accolades while I remember it. (Christmas time...) This will be a post to revel in in the future. (Sign of approval)

Wow, great post Doitsuyama! It is often hard to find info on the up-and-coming rikishi and your summary is marvelous. Thanks a million!
