mikawa 1,794 Posted July 25, 2018 Found a documentary on YouTube about the daily life of the coach and members of Kaiyo High School Sumo Club in Niigata. Kaiyo High School is one of the traditional powerhouses in high school sumo, and are 8-time national champions. The 4-part documentary focuses on the club's coach, Tomi Tetsuya, and his wife, as they prepare the club members for the Kanazawa Tournament.in May of this year. Akinomaki 39,768 Posted July 9, 2020 (edited) The Kaiyo high sumo club had developed gottsan retort curry, to help the club survive. The club at the moment has only 6 members, it used to be about 10, who consumed 30kg of rice in 2 days. The costs per student are much higher at this special fishery prefectural high school, as a public school the budget is limited. A few years ago, when the school had not enough students, there were moves to have it absorbed into other schools. The staff made nationwide PR efforts, appealing with the unique education. Now nearly half of the students come from other prefectures, they are integrated in community activities and get support from the Itoigawa locals. The sumo club members and OBs take part in local matsuri and events, making chanko and teaching sumo to the kids. Gottsan curry was developed last year by 3rd years Takeoka (now Oguruma-beya), Fukasawa (Naruto) and Kurita (now at Waseda university) - that kind of fund raising and that they were allowed to pose on the package is unique for a high school sports club - maybe only allowed for the sumo club. Fukasawa had won the Grand Prix at the Itoigawa business plan contest with the project "Feel Itoigawa with chanko". The 3 developed the product in the school's aquatic resource department nutrition science course. The sumo club in the past had developed the product "garlic miso". The arrangement then was vague, this time they had it fixed that 3% of sales would go to the sumo club. Akinomaki 39,768 Posted June 3, 2022 Kaiyo high since this year has the first foreigner in the sumo club, 1st year Nyam-Ochir Turbold (182cm, 134kg) from Ulaanbaatar (Turbold 1 is now Mitoryu). He came to Japan with his parents at 3rd grade primary school and started sumo in 4th year when they moved from Kanagawa to Chiba. As 1st year in middle school he was 165cm and 60kg, more than doubled that weight in 3 years and gained power. In 3rd year middle school he was runner up at the HokuShinEtsu middle school soutai in heavy weight hokushinetsu/docs/result_sumo.pdf.
