ScreechingOwl 343 Posted July 18, 2018 I've bombed out in almost all the pre-basho games, in part because I relied heavily on Hakuho and Tochinoshin (although I made mistakes as well). I'm doing reasonably well in the daily games. I'm very fortunate to be 9-2 in Quad (where wins are going to be very difficult to get for everyone over the final four days) and Bench (again, without Tochinoshin). I'm in 4th place in Odd with 50 points and would really like to finish in the top ten (which I haven't done in over two years, I believe). And I'm in a 5-way tie for 2nd in TTT. So I have real chances in all those games, although four days is a long time, so we'll see. I'm 7-4 (and kadoban) in Toto, so one more win for my kk and probably three more required to get points. I'm 5-6 in SG: I've faced some stiff competition (although isn't Panda always unbearably stiff when he faces me?) and also forgot to make an entry on day 1 (I got a phone call and forgot to press enter). I'd like to get a kk there too. I fell one day short of points in Chain and am doing poorly in ISP and Tip-Spiel. Sometimes you're the dog, sometimes you're the tail. Good luck to everyone over the final four days. Gambare!
Haidouzo 78 Posted July 19, 2018 As usual, the Machine insists on what looks like a bold prediction--Takayasu being the second-most likely to win on the day--and wonder if a screw had gone loose. So I chose the next best anticipated loser in TTT and avoided the match entirely in SG, but went with it in DST and Toto. I saw the bout results this morning and just about screamed seeing Taka win, but, thankfully, my backup pick also lost, and I remain the sole leader in TTT, and with only two others one win behind me. And, with the exception of TUG (and Odd, I suppose, where I elected not to enter), it's another clean sweep of wins! 5 points from Takayasu in DST essentially guaranteed a strong above-average day. Still, in most everything but TTT, it's just damage control (Bench), or a late push for a pinch of points. GANBARIMASU
Haidouzo 78 Posted July 20, 2018 A fairly strong day 13. Won (along with very nearly everybody else) in TTT to stay alone in the lead, with only two others just one win behind. KK secured in SG--now to try for DD. 7-6 in Toto after a fortunate win. Another great day in DST but much too far behind the top 10. Losses in Bench, Quad, and TUG. (No bet in Odd.) GANBARIMASU! Pandaazuma 1,310 Posted July 20, 2018 (edited) Seb is now the game's sole leader, pulling out a fine 9-pointer today. Four players are chasing him and he'll probably need to win out as he'll almost certainly lose a yusho tie-break. Gary is one of those on his tail. Seb fights another yusho rival (Kibooyama) tomorrow. Gary faces Scott. Congrats to Jan and Scott for getting their 8s today. Stefan has a bit of a fall to Earth today, losing 4-8, but his ten wins should be enough for promotion. He is one behind in the yusho race now. Seisset managed to stop that awful losing streak today. Jezz fell to MK. Zannen. Ronnie is still battling to get his. Day 13: Rank Wins Points AADs Opp AADs 10 8+ 5- TB TB+ Who? Pandaazuma 1,310 Posted July 21, 2018 I'm off to Australia tomorrow afternoon and so won't be able to post the final standings until I get back in a week from now. Anyone can feel free to update the table below if they wish. Anyway, I'll try to provide a proper commentary today and hope that is enough. Let's see. Panda walked into yet another AAD...and believe me, he is getting bloody sick and tired of his luck this year. Panda leads all three divisions on points and yet is only 7-7. Will have to beat Ozeki Yamashiro tomorrow to avoid Yokozuna kadoban next time. If he loses, Yamashiro will be Ozeki kadoban. High-stakes bout. Kuroimori keeps up the fine work and faces heya-mate Sebunshu tomorrow. Will there be a bulky envelope in Jan's mailbox in the morning? Seb lost today and is in big trouble because his weak scoring has caught up with him. He not only needs to beat Jan but also needs all three other rivals to lose. One bit of luck went his way though - none of the rivals face each other so it is not impossible. The 9-5 players are not mathematically out of it, but only Gary would have a realistic chance of yusho...and he would need all the 10-4 lads to lose. Miyako kept her KK hopes alive and she faces yusho hopeful Andonishiki tomorrow (so maybe another envelope from Seb in her mailbox?) Owl fell to a strong Kuroimori line-up and is sadly MK. Gary's had a great basho but Tamawashi let him down badly today. 9-5 is excellent though. Rupert is MK. Scott can go for double digits tomorrow. Renaud has battled to 7-7 and can go for his 8. Congrats to Mark on his 8th win today. Sergio, Hal and Ganzo all put up some nice damage control and moved to 6-8. Sagi lost again and the yusho is out of sight now. He'll be more than happy to make do with the promotion though. Seisset gets his eighth win after a bit of a scare in the second week. Jezz beat Ronnie, who will now have to win tomorrow to go KK. Seb is guaranteed to be sekiwake next basho and will be on an ozeki run. A win tomorrow would greatly help that cause as he would need only ten wins in September. Sanyaku promotions are available for Kuroimori, Chankoyama, Chocshoporyu and Haidouzo depending on how tomorrow's results go. Sagi is now guaranteed promotion to Makuuchi. And that's about it on the banzuke front. Good luck, everyone! Day 14: Rank Wins Points AADs Opp AADs 10 8+ 5- TB TB+ Who? Pandaazuma 1,310 Posted July 21, 2018 (edited) After a truly horrendous basho I am surprisingly in the running for more points than I expected. Hard to believe, given that several of my main picks either pulled out or didn't show up. The main points chances are in Hoshitori and Toto, which I definitely have to win tomorrow. Small change may be available in Bench and Quad...ad even Rotosumo, which is a real shocker given that I have no yokozuna OR ozeki. Maybe even Oracle with a little luck. With the six points I already have from GTB, I could easily top 20 points. I'll set a target of 25. I'll need it too because it looks like Norizo is going to get a lot of points. And he is always dangerous in the World Championships as a proven winner. I've had almost zero time for sumo this basho (moving house and other stuff) and it's definitely reflected in my performance. Things should be settled by September and I'll be aiming then for the green mawashi and a decent score. GAMBARIMASU! Haidouzo 78 Posted July 21, 2018 Lost in TTT, but still alone in the lead. Three pursuers one win behind. The march to DD in SG continues. That's all that really matters now. GANBARIMASU
Pandaazuma 1,310 Posted July 22, 2018 Sat in the airport bored so might as well comment. Depending on how well I do in Salarycap, I may just break 30 points...which, in this disaster of a basho, is very nice indeed. It helps cushion the damage against Susanoo and especially Norizo (who is going to be 60+). I am hoping to get over the 200 mark and then come back at full strength in September. I actually had a good senshuraku, winning almost all the dailies and soaring in the pre-basho ones so I should have mostly winning records this time out. Only TTT and especially ISP were dead losses. But it was all capped by a last-gasp SG KK that means I escape yokozuna kadoban. If I had been 7-8 as the game points leader, I would have been gutted...so I am very relieved about that. If I can have a basho with an average array of opponents, I will be able to get more yokozuna-like records. Good to see Andonishiki winning the yusho. Of the DD players he had the highest score and so deserved the big prize. Congrats to him. As for Mukade beya, I see Kuroimori and Seb are on ozeki runs in September, with Jan needing 10 and Seb 11. Will post the SG stats next weekend if no one else does before then!
Haidouzo 78 Posted July 22, 2018 Good God, what a [censored] [censored] basho. The whole year, really. Leading almost half the basho in TTT to lose it on tiebreak on the last day for JY. So, still not a single yusho this whole year. Also screwed out of DD in SG, but at least it's still a 5-way tie for 6th, which should be another three points. Add on a 9th in Odd, and this is (so very sadly) my best basho so far this year. I may also get a few more points from Salarycap. 5-10 in Bench and DST. An abysmal MK in Quad, for sure. But I must surely have a KK after adjustments in ISP, and--somehow, in this Bizarro Year--I managed to win on the final day in Toto for 8-7, not that that will do much to get me out of the bottom of the banzuke barrel there. See you in September, when the march/prayer for ONE YUSHO will continue. GANBARIMASU
Ganzohnesushi 526 Posted July 22, 2018 Results were rather fine in Nagoya Basho for me, though I did not earn many SB Masters points. The dailies: Great finish in Seki-Toto to grab my 3rd Yusho there. 11-4 + better TB (more correct Makuuchi picks) was just enough Finishing 9-6 in Bench Sumo after a terrible 0-4 start is brilliant and even grants me 0,60 SB Masters points #13 in DST --> 10-5 is nice #19 in Odd --> 8-7 is not that bad ISP 9-6 - nothing to complain Sumo Game 7-8 - some bad luck, especially on day 4 when I would have beaten Fujiyama easily without Hakuho's short-termed Kyujo. But three wins over the last three days keep me in Makuuchi. S4 8-7 - secured KK with 4 wins on the final four days TTT 5-10 - now that was awful Chain Gang - Exit on Day 3 (when almost everyone went out) Pre-basho: # 16 in POG --> 10-5 is welcome # 9 in OBG --> 10-5 for a shared 9th rank results in 1,5 SB Masters points #13 in RotoSumo - Meh, if only I had picked Mitakeumi instead of Ichinojo, would have been #4 #9 in Oracle --> 10-5 and 2,5 SB Masters points is nice #46 in Fantasy --> 10-5, nice UDH ? I assume it will be 9-6 or 8-7. Hoshitori ? Same here Juryo Game 8-7 is nothing to write home about SalaryCap ? With Hak/Kak in 10 and 9 points I would be more than happy to stay in the upper half and get KK Norizo Cup 7-8 is a bit disappointing #32 in GTB --> 8-7 is something that makes me not really happy Moreover, I grabbed my 6th Makuuchi Yusho in Yoso. In total 19,6 SB Masters points are not enough to improve my position in the SGWC standings. On the other hand I'll climb up the Banzuke in a couple of games, i.e. I might get back to Ozeki rank in the SB ranking for Aki. Ganzohnesushi
ScreechingOwl 343 Posted July 23, 2018 (edited) Given that Simon has gone down under (and also seems to be in Australia), I've attempted to do the final figures for Sumo Game for my fellow centipedes. Four Mukade gamers were searching for kachi koshi on senshuraku and two achieved it. Congratulations to Simon who prevailed over Ozeki Yamashiro in a hard fought tie and removes his kadoban status by achieving his well deserved kachi koshi (with an impressive haul of 107 points overall) and to Ronnie who also won a tie, although against much easier competition. Condolences to Miyako and Renaud who went mk on the final day, each losing with a 6. Congratulations go out to Jan and the much ribbed Eric for finishing with 10 wins, worth a tie for fourth place. Similar congratulations go to Stephan in Juryo, who also garnered 10 wins and seems likely to move up to the top division in September. Eight centipedes fell just short of kk with 7 wins, including Miyako, who faced almost unbelievably difficult competition. Perhaps we'll have better luck next time.
