Congrats to the Owl, who came through his match while his rival lost to heya mate Gary. That's a third Makuuchi yusho for the feathered fighter. Gary gets a jun yusho for his efforts. Congrats also to Jan, Unko, Seb and Ronnie on achieving 8 wins today. Mostly it has been a very creditable Centipedal performance despite the tough nature of the basho.

Terrible basho

76/81 in Roto

Out on Day 1 in Chaingang

5-10 in Bench

7-8 in SG

T47 in ISP (9-6) is my only consolation

Almost forgot, 36th in GTB which was cool (9-6)

See you all next year!

I overachieved this basho, but bad results on senshuraku and day 14 leave me with a sort of bitter aftertaste, although both days were quite difficult to gauge (as can be seen by the fact that more than half of all gamers got more than half of their predictions in Toto wrong both days). I feel especially bad about not winning in Toto, which has always been my favorite game. M day 13 total was just below the line, as I had the same number of wins as people who ended up in the top half. And winning the Sumo Game yusho doesn't compensate for that loss, as my performance there was merely adequate, with my win being due primarily to unusually weak competition (from mostly strong competitors having off days).

Of course Sumo Game almost always has a strong quotient of luck involved: when Pandaazuma took the yusho in Natsu I had the same point total but finished with 7 fewer wins. In Kyushu we again had the identical point total, only this time he finished with an astonishing 9 fewer wins, as his opponents racked up 19 more points against him than mine did against me. A yusho is a yusho, of course, but this one resembled Kyokutenho's in my opinion.

I also took the yusho in SCS, and that one was deserved, and finished with the jun yusho in Hoshitori and in Toto (much shared), as well as logging in top ten finished in Quad, Tip Spiel, and Oracle.

Of course the upsets in the final two days of this basho aren't unprecedented, but I think we'll be entering a period where they become increasingly common. I don't think Pandaazuma's domination is likely to end because of them, although I do think he'll find it more difficult to approach his astronomical scores of the last two years. And I think there will be a greater variety of gamers winning (and often winning big) from basho to basho, as the luck factor increases. We've already seen an increasing number of winners on the real dohyo, so perhaps we'll start to see the same thing on the virtual one.

That's not to disparage anyone - there was a large luck factor in Kyushu, and this was by far my best tournament of the year, so I was (overall) a beneficiary of it. I am merely acknowledging that with the injuries to so many of the top rikishi, and with Hakuho moving toward retirement, we are entering a whole new world in sumo gaming.

Best holiday wishes to everyone.

Four Centipedes now grace the elite sanyaku division, and I believe that is a record. Panda, Scott, Owl and Gary...over to you!

Only one divisional promotion as Gansekiiwa sneaks into Juryo. Looks like Jezz is kyujo again.

Good luck, you multiple-legged freaks!

Another gaming decade. Last basho the quality of sumo was so abysmal in the top division that for the first time ever I didn't even want to watch. Hakuho is a surly, petulant, arrogant, bullying nightmare these days and I can't stand the sight of him. Almost everyone seems injured or overweight. Henka all over the place. One ludicrously overzealous gyoji single-handedly destroyed Tsurugisho's confidence last time too. There was basically very little to enjoy apart from the occasional decent bouts. Juryo was thankfully really good last time and I enjoyed it far more. This annoyance seeped into the games and they became a real chore, especially as picking right now is basically a lottery that will challenge any picking algorithm. Looking at the day-one torikumi made me laugh - pretty much all the bouts apart from the obvious ones are 50-50s. Needless to say, I am not at all confident about keeping my crown in these circumstances, and I suspect there are at least ten or fifteen players who can win it this year. This will obviously make for a far more exciting tournament this time. I really hope so anyway! If I do win it, I suspect it will be prowess in the pre-basho arena that carries me over the line, because the dailies are lotteries right now.

In order to deal with this, I've decided to hand over my picking to my picking system completely and without question. I used to overrule it fairly often and it was biting me in the arse daily in Kyushu. Back to basics for the Panda. I figure that if I do that, then I'll enjoy the sumo and the gaming a lot more as I won't then be blaming myself for dumb judgement calls.

Goals for this year: Retain the title, win at least two green mawashi, keep my SB Yokozuna East ranking throughout the year, Retain my Yokozuna rankings in all the games I am currently at that rank (SG will be a real challenge, I think), no stinking Baka Cups, and most importantly, have a good laugh with my fellow gamers.

Remarkable day for the Panda, not least for the fact that today was the kind of day I usually get utterly slaughtered on. I won everything except a stupid pick of Ichinojo in Chain and a loss in TTT, where only four players actually won. Rode my luck in SG and Bench and I'm going to need it big time as I am soft kadoban in the former. 8 is the first objective in that game so I will be really going for it in week one. Celebrated my Toto Yokozuna promotion with a win, did pretty well in Tipspiel and...the highlight...got a big bet up in Odd Sumo to take the day one lead. I have just been promoted to Ozeki there so that was nice timing.

The pre-basho scene looks very promising as in the main I have avoided picking the ones who looked very poor today. Only day one, of course, but I see good things as long as injury doesn't do me over as usual.

And a win in the Baka Cup was the icing on the cake.

I woke up earlier than I wanted to this morning in a mild panic that I hadn't actually made an entry in Toto.  I hadn't remembered actually finishing it.  But then I checked my email and saw the confirmation email.

Then I heard about the horrid results in TTT and now I'm thinking... Turn The ******* Tide.  That's the one I forgot.  Looks like it shouldn't make any difference, though.  (Thankfully.)  (So very thankfully.)

Also forgot Chaingang, but at least I had my default pick to lose with instead of a more conscious pick.  (Not paying attention to the fact that my default pick would have been my conscious pick.)

Lost in Bench, and only one winner out of four in Quad.  Missed the bet in Odd but that's normal.  No play in TTT, but no big loss, it seems.

A strong 8 in DST, a win in ISP, and a win in Toto to go along with the tiebreak win in SG.

I suppose a 50/50 start isn't too bad, given how crazy the day was.

Panda, Unko and Ronnie are the only unbeaten Centipedes left. Jan is no longer alone at the bottom of the standings (all divisions!!) as he is joined by Stefan, who today scored just one point. Both players, however, are well-known for their comeback skills. Ganzo's bad luck from last basho is seeping into this one. Gary and Owl are also meeting very tough opponents. Owl is top of the whole game on points but is 1-1!!

So close to getting another nice Odd Sumo bet up! GodDAMMIT, Okinoumi! I met a drone in SG, which is pretty damned rare at that level. 2-0 is nice but 8 is the only number I care about this basho. kinboshi in Bench for 2-0. Going pretty well in most games now and the pre-basho ones are looking OK, although my dark horse Myogiryu hasn't done anything yet (and he has Hak tomorrow). Really can't complain. Very strong first two days. And, a nice 2-0 lead in the Baka Cup!

After yesterday's nightmare, Stefan shone today with a brilliant 8. Sadly Jan's nightmare continues, and is now sub 10 after three matches. That must be a first.

No one is unbeaten now. Gary and Jan have yet to get off the mark. Still awful luck for Gary, and Gansekiiwa isn't having much fun either.

A really annoying day for the Panda. Picked well, I thought. Just needed Kak to win SG. He lost. Just needed Hak to win Bench. He lost to MYO!! And I was three below the smegging line in Toto. Sickening luck. Managed a win in ISP and scored a decent 14 in DST but I was annoyed to lose four perfect records today. At least the Baka Cup stays perfect at 3-0.

Pre-basho looks very tasty now though. Lots of potential there for serious Masters points.

Doing as well on day 3 as I can reasonable hope. 2-1 in SG, and ISP. Still alive in Chain Gang. TTT isn't going too great, but I'm hoping I can do better the next few days. Pre-basho games are a disaster as always.

Another low-scoring day.

Day 4: Everyone is at parity or worse except for Ronnie, who has been scoring brilliantly, and Dustin, who is off to an uncharacteristically strong start - he is more of a comeback player. Everyone is on the board now that Gary and Jan got their first wins.

Another hard-luck loss in SG for the Panda. Really annoying me now as last basho was the worst ever and the last two days seem to be picking up where that left off. Second highest score but not much to show for it. Bench at least is OK and I have a decent team there for a change. Only bad luck of the day yesterday stopped me from being 4-0 now. Finally got a win in TTT and it's mad to be in the top ten with a 1-3 record. It will be 1-4 tomorrow as well, as the torikumi is a nightmare. Poor day in Tipspiel but I am still in the top ten. Nice recovery in Toto for 3-1. Still leading Odd but I'm going to need another winning bet, I suspect. ISP is fine at 3-1 as well. The dailies are going surprisingly well overall.

Pre-basho is a mixed bag. My Myogiryu punt has paid off in spades in Paper Oyakata and Bingo...and probably Hoshitori too if we ever get to see the standings. UDH will depend greatly on Tochinoshin (who I have at 6) but I am not expecting much as a lot of people have Kakuryu at 6 too and he is a goner for sure. Norizo Cup and Roto look good as well. Juryo Game and Salarycap are the only total write-offs so far. All in all things are looking very rosy.
