From Chiba (where I'm currently living) to Kanagawa, with this documentary about the Asahigaoka High School sumo club, their 2 Mongolian members, and their team captain Shigeki Yoda (big and strong, he is). The video shows the club training, eating, mountain-climbing, meeting the school's orchestra club who came to cheer them on, as well as their showing at the 106th Kanazawa tournament.

Local Kagoshima TV had a news feature about Tokunoshima's Toyoda Rinnosuke - and his rival from Amami, Shigemura Konosuke, both aim for middle school yokozuna. https://www.kyt-tv.com/nnn/news1047pfoo25arv2zyujv.html

New reports about the Tottori Johoku high sumo club, with the interhigh yusho and first years as new members, including 2 Mongolian ryugakusei, one maybe from middle school, one who came to Japan in April  - part 1 about the new members, including managers, girls who cook the chanko etc.

4 straight years as the top high school team in Japan for Tottori Johoku. Saitama Sakae hasn't won a single national tournament since the 2018 Kokutai (technically they won it as Saitama prefecture) - one could argue that they've been eclipsed even by Hiryu and Kanazawa Gakuin.

For someone who started following ozumo when Saitama Sakae was at the end of its dominance (not that we knew it then), this comes as quite a bit of a surprise. What happened there?

And on that note, Kanazawa Gakuin beat Saitama Sakae today to win the National Usa High School Tournament.

I'm not sure why Saitama Sakae's success has dropped in the last few years. It could just be a random fluctuation of talent, but perhaps other schools are putting more effort or resources into recruiting and training.

I know this has certainly been the case with regards to Kanazawa Gakuin's university team, which used to be rather mediocre but over the last couple years has recruited team members who you'd have expected to go to a powerhouse school like NSSU or Nihon University. The result? Their first national team title in years. I believe the university team also trains with the high school team sometimes, so better university recruits = better training partners for the high schoolers.

Saitama Sakae is still a top team to be fair- they have 3 second place finishes this year and do boast the most recent high school yokozuna (unceremoniously trounced in the above clip). But 4 years without a national team win is quite the drought for them.

If this goes on much longer, Tottori Johoku will become the coolest name in high school sumo, if it hasn't already.

Tanioka was an excellent competitor who would've done well as a pro. Technically pristine yotsu sumo - I think he's the type who can teach youngsters a lot.
