The Godfather of Thailand Sumo - Kurasawa Sumio

This short documentary tells the story of Shizuoka-born Kurasawa Sumio (倉沢 澄夫), about how he went from a bank worker in Japan to the founding father of the Thailand Sumo Federation. Kurasawa has certainly experienced his fair share of highs and lows, but whenever there seemed to be no future, Yokozuna Taiho's words would ring in his ears - "So stubborn, this one is", and he would gain the strength to fight on. A truly inspirational story.

Cool video--thanks for sharing!

I was watching some amasumo tournaments a year or so ago and noticed a corporate competitor with one arm! He won more than he lost...

12 year old Toyoda Rinnosuke was police chief for the day home in Tokunoshima, as a winner at the Hakuho cup last year.

Another local news report on Toyoda Rinnosuke. He graduated from primary school and moved to Kashiwa, Chiba, No. 2 middle school, and the Kashiwa sumo youth team, that produced Takanosho and Kotoshoho. In 3 years he wants to join ozumo, the coach thinks he has everything to make it to ozeki and yokozuna, if he doesn't lose the fight with himself. "A talent that appears once in several years"

"I want to become a yokozuna who surpasses the yokozuna of the past."

Here's another video about Yoshiki Fuse and the work he does at Mitaka Sumo Club in Tokyo. Interesting that the club members say that they like the fact that Coach Fuse is so strict, because they know that they are getting stronger because of it.

I saw him in a corporate competition a couple years ago, having no idea who he was or that there was an active 1-armed competitor. Even in his 40s he was still good and won more than he lost!

A follow up, Rinnosuke in his first year was team member of the Kashiwa team at the national middle school championships, as taisho, the last of the three. They made it to the sf, there his two teammates both lost. His bout was not shown, it was rather meaningless, since the team already lost, but I guess he lost as well, else they would have shown it. https://www.news24.jp/articles/2021/09/20/07942687.html

He was pretty good in that tournament, I thought the best on his team. Although I had been under the assumption that he was larger.

A visit to the Tottori Johoku high sumo club - titled as Japan's no.1, Saitama Sakae may think otherwise, but Tottori has the high school yokozuna and Terunofuji as OB

They've been #1 over the last few years at least. I don't think Saitama Sakae has won a national team title since the Kokutai in 2018 (as Saitama prefecture, but essentially the SS team) and mostly they haven't even been in the semifinals. In that same time they've only had 1 individual winner in a national tournament as well.

Nice 15 minute feature on college sumo's best team, Nippon Sports Science University. It seems as if it's been edited to make it appear that they beat rival Nihon University in the student championship final, rather than Kindai.
