Earlier today, I watched a Terunofuji bout from Aki '13, when he'd only recently arrived in Juryo, and almost teared up. I'm not even a Terunofuji fan, but I do think he had Yokozuna potential, and what's happened to him in recent months is upsetting. 

The worst part is, I'm now convinced that he will never recover his ability to resist when pushed back. If his leg was ever going to accept that pressure again, it would have shown at least some small signs of recovery by now. I think his career ended last spring, he didn't recognize it at the time, and still hasn't admitted it to himself.

He really needs to quit now, even the most optimistic would say there isn't any hope of a comeback.

 

Former Kotokaze returned to Makunouchi from the depths of Makushita after his first severe knee injury in the late 1970s but Terunofuji has too many complications.  If it was just his knee, he might have had a chance.

That was...difficult to watch. Seeing the juxtaposition with the video above it is just cruel.

Its really sad to see, he should definetly retire and who knows, he might even have a future as an actor, big exotic guy, he needs to get in shape slowly but surely, however, the competitive world of sumo is like a piranha pool and he has no place there at all with his injuries any longer.

Sad to see indeed, he represented pure strenght on the dohyo...

Terunofuji is training again. Yesterday he showed up for training at Isegahama beya. Today he did some light training-shiko mostly. He was conscious of his knees and an "it hurts.." was heard as well.

Sandanme Terunofuji is out of Hatsu. This will be his fifth straight kyujo, and will drop him to Jonidan in March, where he is aiming to enter. "He's doing this to return to sekitorihood. He has to become perfectly healthy," said Isegahama Oyakata.

It's such a shame, this seems like an almost impossible task to me, considering how he looks now...poor bloke

If he manages that, he will have broken some records. Of course he aims to rise quickly, in as few steps as possible. But by the time he could reach the Makushita joi, the current crop of talented guys will have gained the experience to give him serious trouble. Staying "perfectly healthy" fighting his way back to the top is... improbable... but nothing would please me more than to see him get back.

Too bad, but now he can get all those lower division Yusho he missed when he first came up.

Yeah, why not drop all to way to Jonokuchi and be able to pick up the four lower division Yusho?  He's already got the top two divisions.

I wish the guy well both career and (especially) health wise, but I never cared for him after that henka against Kotoshogiku in 2017 when the latter was a kadoban Ozeki

Why would you want him to be kyujo anyway?

Minor correction: Kotoshogiku was Sekiwake and needed a tenth win to return automatically to Ozeki. Terunofuji’s henka led to the sixth defeat that denied him that chance. So it was actually more costly than a mere kadoban situation.

The problem was not Teru. The problem was that Koto lost to a M3, a M1 and 2 SW. If he wanted to go back to OZ, then he shouldn't lose to lower rankers. Don't undestand the blame on Teru.

And btw, the main problem is that anyone could pull an henka on Koto due to his fault, even you and me, so we shouldn't blame anyone for doing it.

Agree. Even supposing he’s able to prolong his career for a while, sumo is never forever and so it makes sense for him to call it a day and put his energies where the future has greater potential. He’s not going to reach his previous heights again and so really, what’s the point? I can’t see him even getting back to juryo. A couple of extra years of middling sumo is a waste of his time. He needs better advice.

But what future potential? He got no kabu, so this path is blocked at the moment.

If they cand men his bones and find the right diet for his diabetes, there is a chance for a successful comeback.

That’s my point. He needs to figure out what he can do for the rest of his life, because right now he doesn’t have a future in sumo. He might get a few more years in the ring, but then what? He’ll be a few years older and in the same position as if he quit right now and found a new path for himself. Harumafuji qualified as a police officer apparently, ready for his post-sumo life. And he’s a former Yokozuna. Terunofuji would be much better off putting sumo behind him at the age of 27 than he will at, say, 30. He’s still young enough that he can retrain in something new. 

As for kabu, he can actually stay on for three years as an ex-Ozeki, but he’s not a Japanese citizen and so, again, it looks like his future is outside of sumo.
