Kintamayama 38,722 Posted December 21, 2018 (edited) Kisenosato has been doing the fundamental training exercises as he gets ready for another crucial basho. Today, he trained for the last time before the banzuke announcement on the 25th. The session was closed to the public but heya officials said he has not done any sumo so far. "I'd like to be able to seriously start training after banzuke day. To that end I did not participate in the jungyo. I apologize to the fans for that.." he said. "I still have a lot of issues to tackle," he said when asked how his recovery is coming along. Edited December 21, 2018 by Kintamayama 1
Kintamayama 38,722 Posted December 21, 2018 A funny thing happened in Saitama today. The three local boys Hokutofuji, Abi and Daieishou did some meet and greets and at the end, on cue from Hokutofuji, being the oldest, were supposed to raise their hands and shout "Saitama, we shall gambarize!!" Hokutofuji gave the cue, did the shout, but the others didn't move, leaving Hokutofuji in the lurch and causing his face to go very red. Probably an Abi prank. It worked the second time around. "I was totally embarrassed, " said Hokutofuji later. 2

Kintamayama 38,722 Posted December 22, 2018 Takayasu was in his hometown today, Tsuchiura, Ibaraki and was exciting the fans. First he did some butsugari with Aoiyama. Then he called out to fellow Ozeki Tochinoshin for a fierce session, going 6-6. Even when he didn't get his favorite hold, he used a right hand hold to win by yorikiri and when he lost, it was after he gave a good fight. After that, another butsugari session, this time borrowing Hakuhou's chest for about six minutes. "I wanted the local fans to get excited," he said later. He was thrown over and over again and was all sandy, but at the end he got a standing ovation from the crowd. "Thank you Hakuhou!!", people were heard shouting. 8 years ago at the same place, Takayasu as a Makushita rikishi ( a month before he was officially promoted to Juryo) faced Hakuhou who was already a Yokozuna for 4 bouts and even beat him once. "I remember that. I am deeply grateful," he said. It was during Hakuhou's 62 consecutive run, which was later stopped by Takayasu's stablemate Kisenosato, and was surely an important phase in his growth. "That was here.. So Takayasu was one of the young ones then. I guess the young ones remember those things better. Should I lend my chest more often to the young guys?" mused Hakuhou. As for the crowd calling out his name? "I guess the Ibaraki fans know their sumo well. I was happy," he said. Takayasu was in the running for the yusho till the last day last basho. "I have been in the running a few times before, but this time it was dangling right before my eyes.. But if I'm honest about it, it makes sense, since I didn't have the physical power to fight till senshuraku. That's why I need to add more power. No time to rest. I will be aiming for the yusho in January!" he declared. He has been training vigorously from the first day of the jungyo to that end. 1
Kintamayama 38,722 Posted December 22, 2018 Juryo and soon to be demoted to Makushita Gokushindou borrowed Yokozuna Kakuryuu's chest today for some butsugari that lasted five minuted. Gokushidou was Kakuryuu's tsukebito in the past, so that was exciting for him. Today, Kakuryuu told him he wants to lend him his chest. "I thought he was just trying to encourage me. I will gambarize so that I can do that again with a white mawashi (only worn by sekitori) again soon," he said. "I think it was important. I want him to gambarize again as a sekitori, even though he will now drop to Makushita," added Kakuryuu. 1

All were active as Ozeki during the first tournament I saw in full when living in Japan – Haru 2007. In fact, the first three were pretty much synonymous with the word ‘Ozeki’ at that time. Now they are long since retired and Hak is a veteran Yokozuna. The fifth Ozeki at that basho – Kotooshu – is also years gone from the dohyo. I feel so old.

It's kinda unbelievable now, but these four (together with Kotooshu) were Ozeki together during Hakuho's time as Ozeki from Natsu 2006 to Natsu 2007... when Tochiazuma retired before Natsu 2007, Hakuho decided to leave Ozeki as well, going one higher. Almost twelve years as Yokozuna now, that's long ago. 1

I think most of the "white stuff" is glare from the lights - you can see something of a reflection in front of Kaio as well.
