But we'll never know for how much longer. Akebono made a sudden decision to retire after winning a yusho the last tournament he entered. Injuries shortened Takanohana's and Musashimaru's fighting days. It's not an uncommon story. I suspect part of HMF's decision to retire in the middle of a scandal where it was even money as to the outcome regarding punishment was that a part of him was ready to retire anyway. Asahifuji - done at 31 Hokutoumi - done at 28 Onokuni - done at 28 Kitanoumi - done at 31 *Takanosato - done at 33 Mienoumi - done at 32 **and the great Chiyonofuji done at 35, pushing
Kintamayama 44,349 Posted July 4, 2018 (edited) Ozeki Tochinoshin went for degeiko to Sakaigawa where he faced his nemesis Goueidou. 11 bouts, lost them all.. He just could not grab Goueidou's mawashi. "It's really sad. He turned me into a toy, " he lamented. Still, his Oyakata said: "He is not in bad shape. It's just that Goueidou is his weak spot.." Goueidou did his low tachiai again. "If we go chest to chest he'll beat me. I'm aware of that and able to do the sumo I want to. I'm in good shape," added Goueidou. He seems to be over the left ankle injury that caused him to pull out of Natsu Basho. Toyboy: Edited July 4, 2018 by Kintamayama 3 3
Kintamayama 44,349 Posted July 4, 2018 Yokozuna Kakuryuu went for degeiko to Tokitsukaze beya today, facing Shoudai and Yutakayama and going 13-1. He showed some quick tachiai that neutralized his opponents' attacks. "That's the most important thing. Getting seriously ready for Day1 while avoiding fatigue. All I can do is do my own sumo," he said. 1

Toyboy: After his showing at the last basho, I was genuinely worried this might have been Goueidou's last kadoban. But this kind of performance is very reassuring (he does always seem to be more promising during keiko though of course...), 11-0 against The Shin seems pretty remarkable

Akinomaki 39,763 Posted July 4, 2018 (edited) Hakuho yesterday was 13-0 against visiting Shodai and Kyokutaisei and 3 others. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20180704/sum18070405000003-n1.html At a support event today he was reminded that he has some record in reach this basho - 800 yokozuna wins - 11 wins needed - his reaction: "My switch went ON!" http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20180704/sum18070420370008-n1.html Edited July 4, 2018 by Akinomaki
since_94 650 Posted July 4, 2018 If Hak's switch just went ON like he said, it doesn't bode well for his opponents. Would love to see him do well, but rooting for Kakuryu and Tochinoshin among the top guys.
Kintamayama 44,349 Posted July 5, 2018 Ozeki Tochinoshin trained with Tochiouzan at home and was 7-9. He managed to get his favorite grip only once in all the matches, and after managing that zero times yesterday against Goueidou, maybe there is reason for concern. "AAAAHHH.." he was heard shouting. "Difficult..Yesterday i was hopeless against Goueidou. I'm sad because I can't win. Am I just weak or is Tochiouzan in very good shape?" he asked himself. "Still, if I keep thinking it's bad it's bad it's bad I will start feeling bad.. That is the number one bad thing. I have to go about my business feeling strong.." he summed. Eikokurai 3,433 Posted July 5, 2018 Kise is going kyujo again then. Patience must be thinning ever so slightly at the Kyokai now.

He is pushing the limits of his rehabilitation like he should've done since the injury, good for him now we will see at least a decent Kise i hope. He can only be forced to retire afther the 8° kyujo right ? This is his eighth so why fight when he can play by the book and show up next basho.

Depends on what the YDC will say at their post-basho meeting. I believe the YDC will not set a deadline for Kise. Neither the kyokai.
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted July 5, 2018 The YDC will put the pressure on if he were to enter and then withdraw again. Both the YDC and NSK want him to actually finish a basho.
Churaumi 728 Posted July 5, 2018 There’s probably some calculus being done at the kyokai and the YDC...is it better to have the first Japanese yokozuna in a while: a) lay low until he’s healthy for certain even if it takes years or b) have him gambarize and only do a few days per tournament or c) force him out, even though his yokozuna reign didn’t work out because of injury rather than misconduct. Looks like a is the choice they are going with.

Bumping someone up to makuuchi would mean bumping someone up from Makushita to fill Juryo --- so paying an extra sekitori's salary. An extra cost for not much gain, imo
Gurowake 3,915 Posted July 6, 2018 In no way should my "they should do this" be interpreted as something that might actually be done.
