inhashi 2,363 Posted May 29, 2018 News started to filter in during the past 24 hours. Here is a link to News7 and first time attempt with English subs. https://youtu.be/5oZoyb_WOEU Asked if he would also be using a four character idiom phrase as others have in the past for their Ozeki acceptance speech, he has said that it would be a bit difficult and will try to keep it simple. 5

Eikokurai 3,437 Posted May 30, 2018 Great to see it’s official now. I always felt he looked like Ozeki material and so glad he’s finally been able to get over his injuries and make the set up.

Swami 245 Posted May 30, 2018 Excellent for him, I can understand that he was disappointed not to get the yusho again, but if he keeps up this form, he'll get more chances for yusho. Swami

Kintamayama 44,778 Posted May 30, 2018 I'm happy for him. I was never a crazy fan, but always rooted for him secretly. After he decided to have surgery and dropped off to the desert, I had a lot of respect for him. After they screwed him the first time, I rooted for him even more. After they screwed him the second time, he became my number two guy after Ikioi. Now, I'm just really happy for him. In the acceptance speech he mentioned his oyakata, something that isn't done. "I wanted to thank him, he told me not to, but I wanted to," he said later. His acceptance speech: "I humbly accept this. I will keep my Oyakata's teachings in mind and will concentrate on keiko in order to be a model for the rikishi. I am deeply thankful today" , he said. "We tried to keep it simple. He said he would only use words he understands (his Japanese is OK but not perfect). I told him not to mention me, but he was adamant.." said Kasugano Oyakata. Is this the time to mention how he treated Tochinoshin for a while? I guess not.. 3

Not to be a shit-stirrer, but I am ignorant of the the two times he was screwed over, and of how his oyakata treated him. I would love to be enlightened. I would love to be enlightened. They promoted him only 7 spots after a 13-2 yusho from Juryo 12. He responded with a 15-0 yusho the next basho.. Then, they kept him out of Sanyaku for no apparent reason a few bashos later. Now, this could be subjective, but I think I'm objective enough to be a tad pissed off for him.. As for the Oyakata hitting him, I have no knowledge of that. At some point he was totally ignoring him, is all I know.
Yatagarasu 352 Posted May 30, 2018 With the flurry of success since his yusho and now promotion (and jungyo in between), I have to ask...has he managed to get home at all to visit his family? It seems terribly lonely to be unable to share these wonderful days together with his wife and new daughter.

Gurowake 4,031 Posted May 30, 2018 (edited) The first example of Tochinoshin being screwed, the case where he could have been promoted to Makuuchi from J12 with 13-2 and someone demotable that stayed in Makuuchi, but because of an extremely crowded top of Juryo only made it to J5, was really and truly awful. They didn't try to balance out any of the bad luck, they just through as much as they could at Tochinoshin. The second instance they at least have now have, uh, I'm going to invent a word here, postcedence* - that is, they have consistently failed to promote people when the same (exact same in the case of Tamawashi last time) sort of situation has come up. And it's not only foreigners that have gotten screwed over - Hokutofuji's 11-4 from M3 is even better than a 9-6 from M1, but they still didn't open up another slot for him. Would they have if it wasn't a debut? Unlikely - they have shown very strong desire to not create Komusubi spots. It simply has not been done at all since Aki -> Kyushu 2006 despite many opportunities, particularly the basho right after that which screwed Kotoshogiku over and showed absolutely no consistency with the previous banzuke. In contrast, since then, they've seemed to go out of their way to favor him. In Haru 2015, he was skipped as an opponent for Hakuho in favor of Toyonoshima, and got compatriot Gagamaru as an opponent on the last day to secure his KK. After the "screw job" of the 9-6 M1w -> M1e the next tournament, he was given Gagamaru again as a late-basho opponent, then faced Kyokutenho in the latter's last match of his career on senshuraku. A M1e looking for a KK and automatic promotion against a 3-win rikishi at the bottom third of the division, already destined to leave Makuuchi. It doesn't get much nicer than that, even if that rikishi *wasn't* going to retire. It was a good thing that he left absolutely no doubt whatsoever that he should get promoted though, because who knows where the pendulum has swung by now. *We have from the same Proto-Indo-European root precede, succeed, cede (territory), concede, exceed, antecede(nt), plus others, but never has postcede been used. In the legal world, one would say that Tochinoshin's case set a binding precedent. :)
serge_gva 52 Posted May 31, 2018 (edited) Anybody knows what Ozeki rank will Toshinoshin get, considering Takayasu and Goeidô went kyujo last basho? Edited May 31, 2018 by serge_gva

Naganoyama 5,884 Posted May 31, 2018 I rather approved of Tochinoshin's promotion acceptance speech. The normal form of words usually includes something to the effect of working hard so as not to disgrace the name of ozeki. That just seems to be the case of setting the bar too low to limbo dance under.

Placing Tochi in the O2w slot balances the East and West sides of the banzuke. Edited May 31, 2018 by Washuyama typo 1
Munjeezy 60 Posted May 31, 2018 I’m almost certain yet again if there are only three of a rank ie yokozuna and ozeki in July that the lowest or newest is always 2E, I don’t think it’s possible to have a west rank without the equivalent east
